Bobby Johnson's future

Abso-Positively-Lutely
There's no way to hate Vandy. Greatest town in the world, kids that make their grades, effort that transcends their ability. I hope they win the East and play for the SEC Championship.
It would be the most refreshing thing that's ever happened to college football.
GOOD POST!

Nashville?

Who will quarterback Vandy after Nickson is gone? Props to PJ for recruiting a blue chip QB.

I watched the replay of Vandy-Ole Miss last night on CSS and at some point, Nickson sat down and M. Adams came in (in the 3rd Qtr, if memory serves) and went 3 of 5 for 31 yards and ran 10 times for 28 (this yardage includes yards lost in sacks). He ran the Vandy offense fairly well.

With the weird plays (int for TDs, kickoff for TD, etc.) this was not much of a fluke. Ole Miss turned the ball over 6 times (including an INT on the last play, so really 5 times, when the game was on the line). Vandy played tough D, and had just enough offense to win. If Ole Miss hadn't turned the ball over so frequently and inside the red zone, they probably would have won, but they did turn it over, and lost.

That said, I don't know if Vandy will win again this year (tough schedule), but they were moderately impressive Saturday.

it really started with Gordon Gee. He was always on his high horse about how college football has its priorities all wrong. It shouldn't be about wins and losses or money, blah, blah, blah. But when everyone else's bowl game proceeds were divided up amongst the league, including to the teams who didn't contribute, he sure didn't volunteer to give his share back.

I know every conference has to have a 'worst' team....they can't all be good. But vandy has been the worst team for a quarter of a century, and they haven't made any serious attempts to get better. They've stuck with CBJ, that's great. What else? Facility upgrades? Sure, they got a weight room and added a moon bounce out front of the stadium for the kids. And they did some painting. They've waited on NCAA-mandated parity to even the field rather than trying to make things happen themselves; there again, Gordon Gee tried his best to bring the rest of football down to his level instead of trying to step up to everyone else's level.

To the poster who said nobody ever talks about vandy on the radio up here: We must listen to different channels. Many of their fans are like people with new money. In the past it's been that they'd win a big game and all of a sudden you'd think they were kings of the SEC. They finally beat ut 4 years ago and they made a DVD about the win; and I'm not kidding. They put out radio ads to sell the DVD....about beating ut. Now that they're undefeated, it's like Bubba winning the $100,000 jackpot around here.

But those are my reasons and my reasons only. You're free to pull for them if that's what you want. I'm a fan of a good underdog story myself, just not the vandy underdog story.

I am with bamanut. Until I moved to Middle Tennessee I kind of liked Vanderbilt, but after a year or so up here that all changed. First, there are a lot of Vanderbilt fans who perceive themselves as elitist, their perception is that they are smarter and have more money than anyone else and that somehow justifies having a crappy football team. Gordon Gee fostered this attitude as he disbanded the Athletic Department. Next, the Vanderbilt fans just never seem to understand why they never have a winning record, it is like some unsolved mystery to them that they get leftovers in recruiting and cannot figure out why they aren't a better team. Lastly, I resent Vanderbilt getting their 1/12 of the $120 million dollar pie each year. They never go to a bowl game, average roughly 34,000 per home game yet still ole Gordon wasn't concerned about corrupt college athletics enough to pass up Vanderbilt's check. You got to be around these people to understand. I like Coach Johnson and if he is lucky he will land a job at some better football school.

I will say (and I'm not sure everyone knows this) but before CBJ accepted the job, one of his conditions was for the Vandy admissions office to agree to relax their admissions standards just a little so that he had a larger pool of talent to choose from.

Still, he's a fine coach and from what I've read, a good and decent man.

I write country music so I spend a lot of time on Music Row, which I love as much as anywhere, moreso because of the music and atmosphere and all the wannabe's(me) flying around chasing dreams.

Plus, I absolutely love Nick's Steak House

Very reasonable explanation. Good luck chasing your dreams. Just watch out chasing the women. That can get a fella in trouble.:eek2:

I really like CBJ and believe he is one of the most overlooked coaches in the country. Look at what he has achieved at Vandy. If he was at another school with better talent, he'd be winning bowl games on a regular basis. What hurts him is the lack of talent he has at Vandy. Correct me if I'm wrong, but when he coached in 1AA, he won at least one national championship. He is never going to do that at Vandy, but he has made them a team you have to take notice of. I think he is a good, if not great, coach. That being said, I don't know that he would leave Vandy, but who knows. He has been comitted to building Vandy up. I think he has done that as much or more than anyone expected him to. I think they will go to a bowl game this year and I'm pulling for them to do it.

No question he's a good man. As for a good coach, so far they haven't grab defeat out of the hands of victory like they do in a few games every year. They finally seem to have some depth to get them through the fourth quarter. We'll know soon enough.

I spoke with some folks with the athletic program today. (I work at Vanderbilt Hospital) They are in the mist of a drawing up a long term contract that will keep CBJ here until he wants to retire. The AD said, "we have the man that we want here already, and are prepared to keep him here until he doesn't want to coach anymore." He later said Vandy is a better school for having a class act like CBJ around. I'm a proud season ticket holder and have been to all the games thus far. I look forward to seeing an UNDEFEATED VANDY BEAT THE BARN!!!!!!!

If a top-notch school snaps up Jim Grobe from Wake Forest, I could see CBJ landing there. It's in his home region (the Carolinas), another strong academic school, and a somewhat easier place to win than Vandy. Assuming Al Groh gets canned, Virginia would probably also give him a look (though ironically they may first be interested in Grobe).

Big contingent of Clemson people want to go after him. I've been told he graduated from there but I honestly haven't made time to check that out. All I know is Clemson is starting to have the beginnings of the same type of movement that is just now developing at UT behind the issue of removing Fulmer.

I think they're being a bit hasty; Clemson might have just had the bad misfortune of opening against a severely underrated Alabama team. But some Clemson fans are talking like they can't wait to get rid of Bowden, and many of those want Johnson.

vandy doesn't have an AD. The school president is over the athletic programs. One more reason that I agree with AJ on vandy.

"Johnson is a 1973 graduate of Clemson University with a bachelor's degree in management." (Wikipedia, caveat emptor)

Living here in Nashville you hear alot of buzz about Vanderbilt and their season. I think Bobby Johnson has done a great job even though his record does not reflect it. They should have beaten UGA and UT last year. Those two games came down to last second FG's. He is doing a great job in recruiting for Vanderbilt and I would love to see him stay and win 6-8 games a year. Also working for Vanderbilt I also pull for Vanderbilt as my 2nd favorite team!

Vanderbilt is my 2nd favorite team in the SEC. I hope they make a bowl this year and that they add to Fulmers misery.
