I have not seen Fanney's name mentioned in anything I've read about fall camp. I don't believe he's hurt and his name hasn't even shown up in the box score of either of the scrimmages. I thought he would come in and make the biggest splash among our freshmen defensive linemen, but it seems Bobby Greenwood has instead. I've seen Deaderick and Washington's names mentioned a few times, but nothing on Fanney. Given that he had such a good year at Hargrave last season, this is a little surprising. There's two weeks left before MTSU, so hopefully he steps it up and finds his way into the rotation.

I think the fact that
Kines is trying to implement the 3-3-5 def. and use it in more situations has been a good idea on two fronts. one to change up the def a little and two it allows for a better rotation. I think Fanny and Washington are looking at a redshirt year. also the 3-3-5 gives a better chance to have our best and deepest units on the field at one time.

I have not been able to attend any scrimmages and been more attentive to the offense this season but I like the philosphy behind the 3-3-5. It will like you said help us out depth wise as well as offer a variety of blitz packages. Its a great package to run against the spread offense something that we are bound to see more of.

"creativity" on the def. side. I mean think about it....you can only rush three DL, or 3DL and blitz a lb, or 2 DL drop the end off in a zone blitz package and blitz all three LB's and a DB or..or .... or.... oh god I'm getting excited....

I think use of the 3-3-5 will give Byron Walton the best chance of our freshmen DL to get significant PT.

i'm not really excited about the 3-3-5... after what minnesota did to us in the bowl game, i'm just now sure how this is supposed to help us stop the 5-6 yard run. if we had super dominant DTs, i could maybe see it.
The 3-3-5 will help specifically against the Florida Gators (!!!), South Carolina (!!!), Utah State, MTSU, and Ole Miss. These are going to be wide open passing offenses that are very pass heavy and we need the extra defensive back for covering the field. It will also help in passing situations against every other team we play. The creativity along the front 6, as 7tech pointed out, will allow for all kinds of blitzing to put pressure on the quarterback.
More importantly, this will not be the base defense we play every down. We're still a 4-3 team.
Against Minnesota, we switched to almost a 5-2 defense after the first half, placed Anthony Bryant over their All-American center, and put some brakes on that run away train. The biggest problem the defense had in that game was our own offense shooting us in the foot (turnovers, turnovers, turnovers!).

I'm a bit confused why you think the 3-3-5 is meant to only
stop the pass. In a 3-3-5 "D", your two outside linebackers are normally set up more like defensive ends...(Think of Copeland & Curry)! It allows a "D" to be very hard to read...the "O" never knows who is rushing and who is in pass protection. It also allows much more flexibility with your DB's! Believe me, you'll never realize a big difference in the base 3-3-5 than you would in a standard 43 "D"!

The 3-3-5 looks like a result of the Brother Bill Oliver consultations this past offseason. This is a package we haven't run since he left. It was used heavily during the 1992 season in passing situations with the Bookends crushing the pocket and a tree trunk at noseguard holding the middle.
This is why I would expect us to use the defense only in passing situations or against spread offenses, because that's where we used it the last time it was implemented on campus...with spectacular results, I might add.
In other words, ole Coach Kines may have just added another devastating wrinkle to our already dadgum good defensive package.
One other thing to consider is that this defensive alignment may have only been introduced this year because we haven't had the personnel capable of running it until now.
From what I hear, Outside Linebacker Juwan Simpson is one of the best cover linebackers we have and, along with Demeco Ryans' coverage skills, this may be a result of these special attributes our current personnel bring to the table.

I' m pretty sure we ran the 3-3-5 last season. I do think Bro. worked with disguising what we were going to do out of the formation, but I think Kines already had it in. Am I wrong?
I personally would rather see us run a four man line, either a 4-3 or 4-2-5. I just don't like our chances of stoping the run against good running teams like LSU or Tennessee if we only use three down linemen. I can see us using the 3-3-5 in 3rd and long situations, but not as our base defense.
It's interesting to note that I saw freddie roach (who is a beast but really about the same size as Jimmy Johns just about 10 pounds heavier) 
at the last scrimmmage in a three point stance lined up basically as a DE on certain defensive plays. was i the only one that saw this and hasn't he specifically done this before?

Our DEs are very fast and good pass rushers, but they're not as big as C & C.
Basically, i don't think we'll have enough meat on the field to stop the better rushing teams we'll face with this alignment. however, i understand that this isn't the only formation that the coaches are going to use so i'm not over-reacting. we will be ok on defense regardless of the formation. we have a lot of fast players who love to hit and tackle. that's the main thing you have to have on D.
i just keep having flashbacks to the minnesota debacle... AARGH!!! LBs overrunning every play and getting misdirected like all get out!
I believe we need the best 11 on the field. 3 man line does not necessarily mean that they will be the only ones on the line when the ball is snapped.

No, but this reminded me, didn't Roach have an interception as a true freshman in the opening game against MTSU four years ago?
