Honest question and want honest opinions for answers: if we did hire a Saban disciple to follow him which would you suggest hiring and would they have come at that time (given the time frame of Saban's retirement and recruiting, etc).
At the time I was rooting for Dion Sanders (lol my bad).I wasn't disappointed with hiring KD, I think we would be in a better position today if we were able to retain Ryan Grubb for last season.
But to answer your question, I really really like Dan Lanning's energy. Kind of feel like Lanning would have been a homerun Saban disciple hire.
Can you guys give me a brief history lesson on why the Bryant Disciples never panned out? The way I see it, Bryant was the kind of coach that begot excellent players, but didn't produce the same caliber coaches to the same degree that Saban did. I'm probably foolish for that comment but that Saban tree is powerful.

Dion was on my list, too. I still have hope CKD will turn things around.

You answered your own question.

... that Saban tree is powerful.

...we hired Bryant disciples and for the most part they just didn't work out....
This really is not true. Perkins fits this description as a player, but never coached under him. Curry neither played nor coached under him. Stallings played and coached under Bryant but had success as HC. Dubious played for but never coached under Bryant, and no AD with a spine (i.e., one not named not Bob Bockrath) would have hired him to replace Stallings.

The failing in the Saban succession plan is that there does not appear to have been one. That's AD malpractice on Byrne's part if true. We needed a Brent Key (for example) on staff and ready to move up. We didn't, and that. combined with Saban's spontaneous decision, left Byrne with few options...
