I have just been reading a thread about Bryce Brown's visit to LSU, on Tigerrant (Tigerdroppings.dot.com). I had trouble following the text messaging-type dialogue, but I think I got the main issue of the conversation.
Seems that Bryce was there with an entourage ("posse"), and that while this group was in a Baton Rouge bar, one of them may have "pulled a gun," and another may have done something unmentionable on the floor of the bar.
Now, this may or may not be anything more than unfounded rumor. But the least that can be said for it is that Miami has pulled its scholarship offer to Brown, and these incidents conjure up memories of another Les Miles recruit, Ryan Perilloux.
If I remember correctly, Nick Saban had a chance to recruit Perriloux before leaving LSU, and because he did NOT recruit him, Perilloux suddenly committed to Texas, though it was pretty plain that he had wanted to go to LSU. Just as suddenly, Saban was off to Miami, in came Miles, and then Miles signed Perilloux to an LSU scholarship. Perilloux seemed to have a penchant for getting into trouble in bars, and he was gone from LSU, kicked off the team by Miles, after leading them as a sophomore, I believe, to a win in the SEC championship game. I have a friend in Jacksonville, Alabama, who says that Perilloux has not necessarily done great things at Jacksonville State.
Saban has stated very plainly that he was taught by Bill Belichick how to choose football players. Rush Limbaugh talked about this very thing this past week, saying that Belichick tries to determine if a guy eat, sleeps, and thinks football before he considers signing him.
I still don't think that a lot of people believe it when it is said that Les Miles won his national championship with Nick Saban's players. Les Miles did not recruit those players, and he didn't coach 'em up from high school-age either. Saban did.
Another thing -- I haven't heard one thing to the effect that Nick Saban has given this guy Bryce Brown a second look. Brown is of course ranked by Rivals as the number one player in the 2009 class. In 2005, Perriloux was ranked as the number one quarterback in the country coming out of East St. John High School, in south Louisiana.
The LSU people are holding out hope that this year's giant recruiting class means that "The Hat" is to be reckoned with. I think that what they are probably missing is the fact that Les still hasn't proven that he knows which players to choose in the first place. And Nick Saban has pretty clearly proven that he does know which ones to sign, and which ones to leave alone. Saban evidently knows psychology; "The Hat" apparently does not.
