Nebraska fan here! We lost our DL coach to North Carolina and Wyatt's name came up on our board as a possible replacement. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Buddy Wyatt - opinions please

Red, I think Coach Wyatt has had a hard time adjusting to our defensive scheme. We try to force the play outside and he is more comfortable with funnelling the play inside.
Wyatt is a good person. He has done well recruiting in Mississippi but has struggled in south Alabama. No idea why.

Re: Buddy Wyatt - opinions please

He's spent much of his career in Big 12 country, and if Nebraska wants him, I think now is the time to make an offer.

Re: Buddy Wyatt - opinions please

Consider how our young DT's developed this year.....NU can have him.

On what do you base that statement??????? The lack of sacks, few tackles behind the line of scrimmage, lower overall tackles compared to the rest of the defense. CJK scheme does not require the DT to do any of those things. They are simply to plug the middle and prevent OL from cutting the LB's line of pursuit in the 3-3-5

Wyatt worked under RC Slocum. The staff were cut loose when Fran and his crew came in to TAMU. Bama picked him up.

have you considered he runs that scheme because he doesn't have the interior linemen to run otherwise?

I am not arguing that we don't have the peronel to run any other scheme. I am merely saying that Wyat is running the scheme developed by the DC. And that the DT's are playing within that scheme, which doesn't allow for fantastic stats for them!

Re: Buddy Wyatt - opinions please

But against non spread teams we try for the 4-3, only we don't have the DT's to successfully pull it off.

Think about how excited we've been for 2 years at those DT's that came out of Hargrove, yet they really haven't developed. They haven't put weight on either, but that's a different issue.

Well, think about it this way. How successful is a DT going to be when 90% of the time they are asked to play the 3-3-5 as I described before and then change to the 4-3 and play gap penetration style Defense for about 10% of the game? I agree that the DT's have not developed to the style of a 4-3, but they do play the 3-3-5 the way that they are supposed too.

Another slant on this is the type of players that have been recruited to the position. Instead of going after true DT's (large and strong) we go after smaller and faster DE's style players and attempt to convert them. That is not always a successful thing and thus the lack of development as mentioned by RTO22 and you.

Re: Buddy Wyatt - opinions please

Look, we were going to lose our entire staff anyway and I don't blame Buddy one bit for running to a school like Nebraska when he had the opportunity. There are only 1 or 2 coaches who have a shot at staying with us...Coach Ball and Coach Kines. All of the others are gone IMHO and there is a better than 50/50 chance they are both gone too. Actually Kines may have a little better than even chance at staying but I wouldn't put my house on it.
