you know, during all that rain in Missouri, Cade put the ball deep in the endzone on KO"s but seems to be struggling a bit.The very next time I kick-off will be my very first time, no critisim, just an observation.

I know what you are saying but I was ok with Cade last night. Not as much of the almost falling down & he is really kicking it high.

We are getting better on coverage down field as well.

I give special teams last night an A.

On a side note way by far our best night punting Mandell just kept them in a hole.

Anyone that thinks we prefer short kicks with our still pathetic return coverage is mistaken. That could cost us a close game.

Don't we see this thread every other week or so?

We want the kickoff to be caught right at or inside the goal line and we want the return man to run it out. When this happens, more often than not, we make the tackle inside the 20.

With the cover team 5 yards closer, and a high kick, defenders are able to get downfield to pin teams deep. This is an adjustment to the new kickoff rules. The rules encourage the receiving team to take the touchback, our goal is to limit their ability to take advantage of the new rule.

Thus is not just us, this statistic holds true nationally and other teams are using the same strategy.

Not trying to be argumentative here, but the "coaches want it just short of the end zone" line is just false. Their preference, if they could have it their way, would be a touch back every single time. Period.

I don't know what the coaches want, but I know what I want. The KO through the endzone and punts out of bounds. The threat of a run back easy TD isn't worth pinning them back by 10 -15 yards.

With our KO coverage struggling every week, the logic of kicking it just short of the goal line doesn't pan out. They almost always run it out past the 25 when the ball is returned. 25 yard line starting point without the threat of a TD or long return should be acceptable with our D. I'm actually surprised, with the troubles we had last year, that this aspect of our game plan hasn't been corrected. I'll have to admit, the least favorite part of watching our games is the opposition's KO returns. RTR

Using last night as an example, if we come out next week and punch LSU in the mouth with an opening TD letting them return the ensuing kick off out near midfield gets the crowd right back in the game. Our KO coverage has been inconsistent and maybe our weakest point on this team. With in essence our whole season on the line next week I think I'll take the KO in the end zone, give it to them at the 25 and go on with life.

62 Kickoffs and 1 run back for a TD is not an overwhelming threat.

We're ranked 101st out of 120 in average KO return yardage allowed so there is plenty of room for improvement...although I did stumble across a category the Barn is in the Top 10 (they are 7th) but it's fueled by their ineptness on offense since they have only KO'd 31 times this year. :)

You know we kick off a Lot!

A lot more than most teams.

With our defense the other team starting on the 40 vs the 25 has not been a major concern.

I think our special teams did good last night but that's why Baskin Robbins has 31 flavors
