Cecil Hurt article for Sunday (Link)

Re: Cecil Hurt article for tommorrow (Link)

It's an editorial, an analysis. It's not supposed to deliver news, but Cecil's opinion on the situation. Say what you want, no one should argue that Cecil doesn't have the best information about Alabama football of any reporter going. He thinks Shula's insulation/isolation contributed to his current dire situation. It's an interesting point that I really hadn't considered.

If Cecil has "sources" that say Shula is in trouble, you can bet it's the truth. Sure, we've heard speculation to that effect elsewhere, but frankly, Cecil signing his name to it gives it more credibility than just about anyone else who isn't on the board of trust, the president or the current AD.

How hard is it, after getting pushed around by the likes of Duke, FIU, Ole Miss, Vandy, Miss St., Hawaii, etc., etc., etc., to figure out that we have a huge problem with S&C & O-line coaching?

How hard is it, after watching our players slouch into the stadium wearing sweatsuits, listening to Ipods, and ignoring the fans, to figure out that they aren't "into the moment".

How hard is it, after watching our absolutely pathetic special teams play, to figure out that our special teams coach is either incompetent or lazy?

Hurt is basically telling us, in a summarized fashion, that Shula was not willing to listen to input form his BOSSES.

Have you ever worked in a position where you could ignore the person responsible for your paycheck? Such a position does not exist on this earth. It doesn't exist in Tuscaloosa.

Shula had tremendous experience and resources at his disposal so that he could "learn on the job". Evidently, he chose not to use them.

Nothing really new in there.

I heartily disagree. Say what you will, but Cecil Hurt has always had his finger on the pulse of the athletic dept. Reading what he says and a little between the lines, I think that a move will be made sooner rather than later.

Re: Cecil Hurt article for tommorrow (Link)

I agree. The thing that speaks loudest right now is the silence. I don't know what is going to happen, but the silence is pretty telling...

i agree. hurt made a good point on slimebaum. he said that if you are going to have shula back next year the easiest thing to do is say so.
i figure they are at least heavily considering firing him, or they've already decided that and are trying to line up the next coach.

exactly.
wednesday hurt was saying on the radio he just didn't know if shula would be back or not, and he wouldn't really hazard a guess. now he's saying he doesn't see how he can be back. that's a huge change. in my opinion it's the closet thing we're going to get till there's a press conference or until every media outlet starts publishing the same thing all at once.

After listening to Hurt and Stallings (my comments on the Stallings interview were deleted from the board) I think a waterhead could figure out that CMS will be fired Monday morning. The question is, are we going to be coachless or is there some good news coming on Monday?

Re: Cecil Hurt article for tommorrow (Link)

I believe that Cecil's article says a lot! Quite a lot really. What this says to me is that Shula (even with discussions with Mal Moore) decided to be loyal to a fault to his staff and refused to make the changes that EVERYONE wants to see.

I really thought that once the changes were discussed with Mal, that Shula would choose to save his job and make the needed changes to the program. He would at least SEE where it would take him (to stay or go), but at least he would have shown a good faith effort to remain. Based upon what Cecil has said, I am baffled and bewildered at Shula's lack of flexibilty and believe wholeheartedly that he should go.

You neither have had to be a football expert or coach to have watched our teams and noticed issues with both Shula's play calling abilities as well as schemes employed by some of our coaches. If you can't see that Coach Connelly has issues with his players ability to block for a simple running play, you're not looking. Shula had to have seen this and at least asked Connelly why he thought we could be successful using this scheme. To not have noticed MAJOR issues with our special teams the same conclusion should be seen. And, as most have pointed out we have had HUGE discipline issues that simply seem to have been ignored and while I had not seen writings by some, the problems with our S & C program were more than evident in games as we lost almost every 4th quarter we played. So this leads us to one major question...HOW DID MIKE SHULA NOT SEE THIS HIMSELF? And, if he did see it, why he didn't see the need to make changes with his staff?

As I sign off for the night, I am left with one last comment. I am unbelievably disappointed with Mike Shula, as I truly thought he had the best interest of the program at heart, but if you are going to be a CEO, you've got to have the Cajones to make tough decisions and Shula is sorely lacking in that department.

Lastly, let me end with this...I stand by all of the above, "IF" what Cecil writes falls into place over the next several days or if we hear that they kept Shula but FORCED certain changes. And the really sad thing is that I have no reason to not believe what Cecil writes.

Waterheads can coach okay just ask Les Miles.;)

Heck, docs thought I was a waterhead but I grew into my big noggin.

Re: Cecil Hurt article for tommorrow (Link)

Cecil Hurt says that Shula is tone deaf to the rising chorus of opinion, both in the fan base and in more knowledgeable constituencies.

Cecil Hurt says that it's impossible to draw a conclusion other than that the point of no return has been reached.

Cecil Hurt has built sources over 30 or so years, with credible, fair, if somewhat UA-biased, reporting.

When Cecil Hurt says derogatory things about the UA football program, in print, and says that changes are forthcoming for whatever reason, I believe Cecil.

Shula has proven to be a good to excellent QB coach, but overmatched at a higher level. I take no joy in writing this, but he's example 1,897,902,834 of the Peter Principle. There will be a coaching change, at the very top, and it will come soon. Maybe Monday, maybe a few days later, but I'd be flabbergasted if Mike Shula is the head coach at the University of Alabama on December 15.

Re: Cecil Hurt article for tommorrow (Link)

I did not know that Shula proposed to keep his staff intact. That actually surprised me.

From the article, it seems to me that Shula put his personal feelings for his coaches ahead of the good of the University.

Re: Cecil Hurt article for tommorrow (Link)

QB is one spot that we can afford to lose a recruit...

never say that :)

i thought we had a stable full of running backs. then we didn't get ford, lost coffey and upchurch to injury. and i think sharrief has been injured at some point.
