Center in 2024

something is fishy. SM leaving; the guy likely to get a very good look or be the top contender at the spot as a result leaving; SM's apparent frustration during the game that others mentioned and also even watching the end of the last play, SM just walked off past JM and Latham laying on the ground.

Couple that with a sideline reporter saying Saban told Milroe to take ownership of some of the bad snaps. I've never heard such a thing directed at a QB before. Then after one of the bad snaps, Saban was talking to SM coming off the field, and SM certainly looked frustrated, but just kinda shrugged, said something and it was almost like Saban understood and accepted the answer. next, Saban mentioned at the halftime interview some of the sacks happened because we were running out of playclock time and didn't have the OL calls made yet to adjust protection but had to snap the ball anyway. Finally when asked about the bad snaps, JM said it's something they talk about being in sync, but it was kinda odd he didn't mention they physically work on it.

The QB has some responsibility in the OL calls, adjustments, blitz pick ups and overall rhythm of the offense. Seth's reactions screams that there is some frustration with how things were being done.

Seth snapped with hesitation like he was confused about when to snap. We probably won't know all the story.

Yeah, all that I get and agree it starts with the QB. I've just never heard a coach, or of a coach, telling the QB he's got to be accountable for some of the bad snaps. The only thing I can think of is if the center is in the middle of making calls and the QB were to execute the snap count. I guess that would rattle and rush the center and could cause a miscue. Maybe that's the reference to being in sync milroe made...

Not sure at all, leaning towards " No ", regarding the question, " Is Alabama`s starting center for `24 currently on campus? ". If he` `s indeed not, that is a MAJOR hurdle and shortcoming that has to be addressed.

If he leaves and fixes this elsewhere, I will totally lose respect for him. He was partially responsible for the loss. He played so poorly this year that the NFL is off the table. He owes it to his teammates to stick around and try to fix this. Use some of his NIL money to pay a coach and work with them every day until spring camp starts.

Well I don’t have players on my twitter so I didn’t catch it, but there are numerous boards that cover Alabama implying that fans were giving him the Cade Foster treatment on his social media accounts when it was seeming like he might come back. If true then I would say that factored into his decision.

Maybe, but even so. Quitting is too easy.

The QB has to accept a good bit of what happens presnap. He has to give the C time to make the line calls if he checks to another play calls for a receiver in motion. If Milroe can't recognize what to do quickly enough presnap it does throw off the sync of everything, not having the right protection for the checked play.

I don't think we appreciate the lack of depth of the cohesion, communication between the OL and QB throughout the season. But l will say they voted through their effort who they would block for in the early games. So own it.

yeah - I get ALL the pre-snap stuff. One of my favorite parts of football was the mental battles between QBs and MLBs as they'd be audibling, adjusting, re-audibling and readjusting back and forth. We don't get that as much with today's game though. Just kinda surprised it would get to the point where a coach would tell the QB what Saban told JM about accepting responsibility for some of the bad snaps.

With the way SM seemed frustrated, it kinda makes me wonder if that voting / effort was unanimous or not...

The center is responsible for inaccurate snaps. JM took responsibility for early/late snaps (false starts, etc.). which is not the same as taking responsibility for inaccurate snaps (high, low, right, left). JM's quote is below; some of this is just him being a good leader.

"Yeah, I take full ownership of that. I should be more vocal, more louder, so it allows the snaps to be on point. I take full ownership of that. Going into Mississippi State is a loud environment and it took me being more vocal at some points in the game," said Milroe. "That's definitely something me and Seth [McLaughlin] are going to get together about. That's not something to worry about. We're going to build and grow and learn from it."

.

If it’s true its both McLaughlin and Milroe’s responsibility for the bad snaps, and they had 14 games to fix it and didn’t, then it’s time both of them head on down the line and hit the portal.

"Well, you know, we've got to have a little better focus on the importance of the snap. This has been a pretty consistent issue where it makes it harder for the quarterback to be able to function when he doesn't have a dependable snap to deal with," said Saban on Monday. "Whether he's faking, whether it's a play-action pass, whether he's trying to read a coverage, because you've got to take your eyes off what you want to be looking at to be able to catch the ball. So, that's something we've been working on and we certainly need to continue to work on it and improve, no question." (Emphasis added)

Best I can tell, the staff wasn’t counting on Ferguson to return to be C.

And I’m not sure it’s all that much of a secret anymore than some of Milroe’s weakness appear to have stretched other aspects of the offense, and a well-coached team like Mich was able to find the pressure points and get it to collapse

Well, now we know it won't be SM.

Brockmeyer is next in line, but many believe he doesn't possess the physical measurables/strength.

So, I think it's highly, highly likely that we go shopping in the portal for an experienced center.

There is always so much more to the football player under the helmet.
There is so much we don't know about the players we watch on Saturdays.
We're quick to point fingers while we sit in the stands, casting judgement while we sit there and enjoy our hot dog and Coke.
Case in point is Bama center Seth McLaughlin, who has been receiving criticism and personal digs after he had a number of poor snaps in the national
championship game (including the final play of the game when Jalen Milroe was stopped short of the goal line).
Numerous reports (including The Tuscaloosa News) now have McLaughlin transferring- his many poor snaps throughout the season may or may not be the reason for his decision to move on (he did not meet with reporters after the Michigan game).
I thought I'd offer up the other side of Seth McLaughlin, the lineman most of us know only by what he does on the football field.
Seth McLaughlin is from Buford, Georgia- he was the nation's tenth-rated center coming out of high school.
McLaughlin started 8 games for Bama in 2022 and every game this season.
McLaughlin had the highest grade among Bama linemen in the Texas game earlier this season.
He did not miss an assignment in the Miss State game.
He did not allow a quarterback pressure or a sack in the Auburn game.
Seth McLaughlin is an accomplished student.
The senior has earned his UA undergrad degree in finance and he has a Master's degree from Bama in hospitality management.
McLaughlin was a semi-finalist for the William V. Campbell Tropy For Academics, and he has a giving heart as well:
He used the NIL money he earned by selling T-shirts and donated the money to the Food Bank Of West Alabama.
How highly is Seth McLaughlin coveted?
According to writer Tony Tsoukalas, the center is visiting Ohio State and Ole Miss week.
McLaughlin also has coaches from other schools after him including Oklahoma, Clemson, Penn State, Texas A&M and Southern Cal.
You have to be really good to draw interest from those football powers.
You have to be an amazing, smart and gifted young man to succeed athletically and academically at such a high level.
Did Seth McLaughlin see some rough patches this past season?
Absolutely.
Does he deserve some fans calling him fat and lazy on social media?
Absolutely not.
There is always so much more to the football player under the helmet.
How about we compliment Seth McLaughlin for his hard work as a UA student athlete and wish him luck in the future?
That sure would flip the script.
That sure would be the right thing to do.

Question: did SM have snap issues the previous years working with Bryce? I don’t seem to recall it being a problem but I’m old. And we know now that Bryce was probably responsible for most everything associated with running the offense (probably even including refilling BoB’s cooler in the press box with Diet Coke). We know how far into the play clock Bryce would go to get to the proper call based on the look from the defense.
I’m beginning to really wonder if the added responsibility of working with a less experienced QB (and an out of sync o-line in terms of communications/assignments) put too much on him.
Yeah I know the primary job of the center is the snap- first and foremost. But there is an adage “when your are up to your rear end in alligators, it is hard to remember your priority is to drain the swamp”.

No, he did not. He was a very dependable snapper. That didn't start until this season.
