Center in 2024

Some fan on Reddit just posted that he went back and coded the snaps from yesterday.

66 total offensive plays
32 were "off target"

He said the other plays where the snap was "ok to good" the result was generally positive with the ball getting back at least to the line of scrimmage.
Thank you.
This level of failure is disqualifying for a center. The one guy who touches he ball every play is the center. Screw that up and the offense sputters. You cannot have a centre who screws up 1/3 of the snaps. Cannot.

Question: did SM have snap issues the previous years working with Bryce? I don’t seem to recall it being a problem but I’m old. And we know now that Bryce was probably responsible for most everything associated with running the offense (probably even including refilling BoB’s cooler in the press box with Diet Coke). We know how far into the play clock Bryce would go to get to the proper call based on the look from the defense.
I’m beginning to really wonder if the added responsibility of working with a less experienced QB (and an out of sync o-line in terms of communications/assignments) put too much on him.
Yeah I know the primary job of the center is the snap- first and foremost. But there is an adage “when your are up to your rear end in alligators, it is hard to remember your priority is to drain the swamp”.

Not really. 11 starts and over 1200 snaps prior to the 23 season. I'm sure there were a few not perfect ones, but it wasn't anyyhing anyone noticed...

I understand there’s a synchronicity required between the QB and center. And no doubt JM has his flaws. But he can do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about balls hitting the center’s calf’s or butt and dribbling across the ground. That happened at least twice in two of the more disastrous plays of the year. That’s all on the center.

We honestly need to just get 2-3 monster guards and offer NIL based incentives to all the guards on depth chart to try out as center. What’s the going rate for center, IIRC, SM’s NIL was $100k or so.

Roq Montgomery # 55 Ol 6'3. I think he was 340lbs but has lost a lot of weight like Otis. I am not sure about his present weight. He originally committed to Ga but flipped to Bama. He played at Anniston and participated last spring. It was mentioned some months ago that he might wind up playing center.

Barrett Jones moved to center his senior year so maybe we have a guard or tackle that can learn to play it

Guys like Jones are unicorns though. All-American at Guard, then All-American at Tackle, then all-american at Center. Won the outland, and then the rimington. Oh yeah, graduates early with a degree in Accounting, with a 4.0, then gets his masters in his 5th year, with you guessed it, a 4.0.

Not saying we can't find an OT or OG who can also learn to snap. Others have for sure. matching Jones is just a tall order. Maybe Landon Dickerson is the example? made the move over mid-season having never played there before, and did pretty darn well. We could use that mean streak of his also.

I see that South Carolina got Toricelli Simpkins, a 6'5 320lbs center from the portal. He is from North Carolina Central in the FCS. I have wondered why some schools do not go after more top players in the FCS and some of the top coaches.

Best wishes to SM! That being said, I gotta' believe Milroe couldn't focus on the defense the way he'd like to because he had to worry about where the snap would go. Seems to me a consistent snap is essential to a QB being able to maximize the offense. Milroe didn't have that all year.

Not only did he not, do you remember how BY stood in anticipation of SM's snaps? While JM would crouch like a short stop about to field a grounder, BY stood there tall (as he could) and very relaxed (almost seemed too relaxed) but snap usually hit him in the numbers.

As other stated, BJ was on another level. Played every OL position at Bama and played them well. Not to mention how "classy" he was. 😁

There's got to be a few experienced centers somewhere who play on teams that are good that would like to play at a place like Bama and have a chance to win big and make a name for themselves.

If I'm one of those guys I'm called Bama and saying "I'll hit the portal for a spot at Bama!"

Jones was a very intelligent football player. I was not surprised that he played well there.

Seth has 4.0 GPA , a bachelors in finance and a masters in sports hospitality management. Pretty smart kid.

I think IOL Casey Poe is a kid coming in that may be looked at , at center. 6-4,290 with a frame that can add 20-25 pounds. Most of our starting guards are former tackles or 330-340 lb kids.
