It's pointless to compare December's version of this team to September's version. The only thing he got right is mistakes. Too many on our side and none on their's is the how we would loose.

The article begins:
- Head coach Jim Harbaugh bowl record: 2-7
- Michigan has lost its last six bowl/College Football Playoff games, eight of its last nine, and 13 of the last 16

Now putting aside my feelings for Alabama for a moment and trying to look at the game totally objectively if I read those kind of stats I have to stick with trends and say until Harbaugh and Michigan prove to me they can win a big game (other than OSU) I'll have to go with Alabama.

Well, these writers seem to think since Michigan is ranked #1, they have to favor them to win. And they're still hung up on the Texas game, which we all know has nothing to do with what this Bama team has become. Bama's RBs run enough to keep defenses honest, and Milroe & Co does the rest. It's going to be interesting to hear what post game excuses Hairball will have for their loss.

What was Michigan`s strength of schedule?
So BEFORE the game it's "we're going to beat them because we played a tougher schedule."

AFTER the game - if we lose - it'll be "they got a free pass to the playoffs," which is the same excuse we heard when Clemson wiped the floor with us at the end of 2018. This is why I hate "strength of schedule" arguments.

Fiutak is pretty good most of the time, but I have a few problems with the threads of evidence he's trying to compile to make his argument:

1) Sort of like it was Georgia’s time over the last two seasons after coming close to big things, and a bit like it was Clemson’s turn in 2016 and 2018, Michigan appears to be ready to make this season its own.

This comparison doesn't even wash. 2015 Clemson lost to Alabama (basically) by one play (artificially) and then won the next year when (take your pick or both of them) Jalen wasn't a passer, Scarborough got hurt, pick plays, and won on the technical last play from scrimmage against an exhausted defense. Michigan lost to a team that got blown out by 58 points.

Those are NOT similar accomplishments. And Georgia has been in contention since 2017, not 2021. "Couldn't beat the (second) worst team chosen for the CFP" isn't the win Fiutak thinks it is here.

2) Texas QB Quinn Ewers was able to hit the throws and go on the drives needed in the 2023 season-defining win in Tuscaloosa.

Ewers threw for 500 more yards than McCarthy did - despite playing two fewer games and being hurt. Oh, and not having the advantage of knowing the other team's signals for that matter.

And what drives did Ewers actually do? Texas won by ten points caused by two turnovers where Texas started with the ball at the Alabama 30 and the Alabama 5. In the first one, they took 10 plays INSIDE THE 30-yard-line to KICK A FIELD GOAL!!!! But yes, Quinn Ewers was totally the Second Coming of Tebow-Cam-Manziel on that drive!!!

Ewers only had one actual sustained drive that was impressive, in the fourth quarter. He hit two other big plays for TDs early, which (wait for it) Michigan hasn't really done this year. He and Texas deserve all the credit in the world for executing, but I fail to see how this is really relevant to a team that hasn't hit big plays, too.

3) Texas A&M had one of the best defensive lines in America, and Alabama’s ground game was held to 23 yards on 26 carries.

This is a tad bit misleading, though.

McClelland had 12 of those carries for 45 yards. And nearly half of those were in the final 5 minutes when Alabama was intentionally playing it close to the vest to hold onto what they could of a 9-point lead, meaning the whole damn stadium knew basically what play was coming. You see, Alabama wasn't overly concerned with inflicting a "double-digit home loss" on Jimbo.

What lowered the rushing yards was Milroe got sacked six times and was far less cool under pressure then than he was after that game. Let's not deny he has improved.

Bear in mind Alabama rushed for 114 yards against a better Georgia defense WITHOUT MCCLELLAN!!! Now, I'm not saying we should totally discount what happened in October, but keep two other points in mind: a) that game was IN College Station; b) aTm was a completely different team at home than on the road (seriously - go look - they were 6-1 at Kyle Field and only lost to Alabama by six). I could point out their coach at the time had a special animus for Alabama as well but whatever.

4) Bama needs to be able to run at least 40 times.

If Alabama runs the ball 40 times - most likely - it is a blowout and Saban is trying to keep the playbook vanilla and not embarrass Michigan.

5) Minnesota is the only team that got close with 39 carries, and it lost by 42.

Minnesota threw a Pick Six on the second play from scrimmage in that game.
They had another Pick Six in the second half, and Minnesota then ran the last 11 plays from scrimmage to keep from losing worse than they did.

This is not exactly evidence of anything other than Minnesota is the second-worst team in the B1G.

He points to things that happened years ago, like Clemson beating us in the national title rematch. That really has no relevance at all in this game. He also points to Ewers beating us with the pass, but Michigan doesn't have the receivers Texas has, and McCarthy has never been a consistent passing threat. It just seems like this analysis was built on what could happen if everything goes right for Michigan, rather than what is most likely to happen.

I know that we haven't looked as sharp as Michigan this season, and I know this has been consistently harped on over the last few weeks, but Michigan played two games against teams that have top level talent, and one of those teams played with its arm tied behind its back because it was so inept on offense. We played at least six teams with top level talent. Yes, teams like Auburn and A&M weren't great teams, but when you're Alabama and you go on the road to play those teams, you're going to get their best games. Rutgers, Nebraska, Indiana, etc. no matter how hard they try aren't going to pose a real threat.

None of that means that Michigan isn't a very good team. It just means that I really can't take away anything from Michigan's season beyond the Ohio St. win and come to any conclusion as to whether they are a really good team, or just a team that played to its strengths, avoided mistakes against inferior competition, and made the most of a pathetic schedule. On the flip side, I can conclude with a high level of confidence that Alabama is a very good team that got better as the season went on.

I don't have a problem with anyone picking Michigan in this game, I just have a problem basing the analysis on Michigan playing like it did when McCarthy was "healthy" and playing against garbage. What's interesting, and I have no idea if anything ever became public, but between the Miss St. game and the LSU game, I was convinced that Milroe had some sort of lower body injury because he just didn't look like the same runner. Ever since the LSU game, he's looked much better, but who knows.

Sounds like its what he wants to happen, not what he truly believes.
He was straining the limits to find "evidence" that Michigan is easily demonstrably better than Alabama.

LOOK - they MIGHT be!! I'm not one of those that discounts teams on a whim with "they played a soft schedule," "they play in a mediocre conference." There's a time for those arguments and I do think that's true of the B1G this year.

But ten of their 14 teams already have five losses. When the SEC does that, we hear they're "top heavy" and sometimes that's correct. And while Iowa might only have 3 losses one of them was to Minnesota, for Pete's sake. That leaves the Big Three - the team who couldn't beat either of the other two (Shower U), and the Big Game participants.

Alabama HAS been Jekyll and Hyde this year, no question. At the same time - except for Texas - this team has been a lot like the Stallings Era teams that "Won Ugly." Yeah, they'd win - but you'd need medication after the game most of the time, too.

You know what's funny? If we had just not played Texas but beaten ANYBODY by any score and were unbeaten right now...the pundits including Fiutak would be picking us to win it all again.

FTR…I’ll put my money where my mouth is…these cats are just looking for clicks…
*His entire pick is on us giving up an early TO and chasing all game…still only losing by 3…so he wants an early TO to swing uncle Mo UM’s way and then just ride that…NOPE!!!
