Game Thread: CFP Games on 12/21 (SMU/PSU TNT @ 11a) | (CLEM @ UTX TNT @ 3p) | (UTN @ OSU ABC @ 7p)

Unfortunately they will use the UT blowout to justify the scores for IU and SMU...but the circumstances are not the same..the "but look at the SEC team getting smoked" will be the narrative...

I think the decision to take Alabama over FSU last year may have influenced this committee’s decision insofar as it involved Alabama. I think the perception of favoritism towards Alabama again might have influenced the decision to take SMU over Alabama this year. “We can’t put in a three loss Bama over a two loss SMU, strength of schedule be damned. We’ll get roasted for playing favorites”.

But we all now know that last year wasn’t favoritism as much as the brainless Booger McFarlands of the world want to whine about. It was absolutely the correct decision.

There was no D1 football team beating Ohio State last night. Can they play with that same emotion and intensity again? We’ll see. They were dominant last night.

Oh they will and already are.

The thing about Tennessee is they weren’t really one of the 3 best teams in the SEC.

I do think the SEC was the best overall league. It’s insane to think Indiana would have been 9-3 playing the schedules of Alabama, Ole Miss, or South Carolina. Still, Indiana would probably have beaten Vanderbilt or Oklahoma, or Kentucky and maybe even Florida. But they would have never beaten Georgia, Texas, or perhaps even Tennessee.

Alabama would probably go 12-0 playing SMU’s schedule. SMU is probably 7-5 playing Alabama’s. But the college football universe, media, fans, etc., is so toxic that there was no way that committee was leaving SMU out.

Back to my first point, Tennessee wasn’t one of the three best teams in the SEC. They played Alabama and Georgia, and avoided all the other teams in the top half of the conference. We completely wet the bed against them. Georgia handled them. They lost to a bad Arkansas team and struggled with Florida and Kentucky. They can judge the conference by that performance against Ohio State, but it was not a surprise to me at all. And it could have been a balmy 80 degrees and the result would have been the same.

Maybe Ohio State is the best team in the country or maybe it’s Oregon. But the Big Ten was not as deep as the SEC. They may have the best overall team, but shouldn’t have gotten the most bids.

If we don’t beat Michigan, this argument against Pretendiana disappears though.

Had family in for Christmas this weekend and other than watching the UT/TOSU game, I didn't pay much attention.

Matter of fact, I'm so disengaged I couldn't tell you who the quarterfinal matchups are.

You're basically telling me all that whining and moaning about "we have to expand the playoff because people are tired of the same teams winning it all the time" was a crock.

Ohio State was in the playoffs in 2014, 2016, 2019, 2020, and 2022.
They barely missed in 2015 and 2017.

And a bunch of us warned folks that what would happen expanding the playoffs is teams like Alabama and Ohio State would win MORE national titles, not fewer, because they could catch a second breath and motivation for the second season.

It does and then again it doesn't. I wish I could guarantee this Alabama team will be dialed in and eager to play the game. I can't. I do think Michigan will be.

Such is the nature of bowl games and has been for many years now.

But I won't make an argument against Indiana based upon how they did against Notre Dame. Once the field is set, you can't go back. And like I said about Tennessee, they deserved to be in the playoffs based upon what they had done against their schedule, but I never thought they had a chance against Ohio State.

I am simply claiming Indiana, and others, did not have as much of a claim to be there as Alabama, Ole Miss, and South Carolina. And that can be true even if all 3 of those teams lose their bowl games. But I get that almost all of college football fandom will be pointing and laughing at us if we lose to Michigan.
 
Ohio State isn't as good as they looked because that Tennessee team wasn't that good. Their primary case for playoffs was beating Alabama and Alabama was a train wreck this year. We basically had a few good quarters against UGA and an iffy LSU team and that's it. The ironbowl win was basically a freebee from a terrible AU squad.
