Game Thread: CFP NCG: LSU vs Clemson (7pm CST | ESPN)

To be honest, I can't remember. I just remember watching the "Jefferson Pilot Sports" 11:00 am game with the "Two Daves" hearing them say "Joe Lee Dunn's defense" and trying to build him up as best they could. LOL!

From Wikipedia: he never coached at Bama although he is a native of Ozark, AL:

1971–1979Chattanooga (assistant)
1980–1982New Mexico (assistant)
1983–1986New Mexico
1987–1988South Carolina (DC)
1989–1991Memphis State (DC)
1992–1993Ole Miss (DC)
1994Ole Miss
1995Arkansas (DC)
1996–2002Mississippi State (DC/LB)
2003–2005Memphis (DC)
2006–2007Ridgeway HS (TN)
2008New Mexico State (DC)
2009–2012McMurry (DC)

I disagree. When they were able to put effect Burrow with pressure they were. Dabo made a great decision to punt on their first drive and pin them deep and it flipped the field for most of the 1st quarter.

Then in the 3rd quarter Clemson got a stop and got the ball and score and got it to 3 points again.

I seriously think they made a huge mistake of not running Ettienne more, especially when it was obvious TL was struggling. But when they decided to try to play LSU's game that's when the game "officially" got away from them.

Completely agree with this. At 28-25 it was a game but Clemson didn't go with what was working. I don't know why they went away from Ettienne. This is where I think only playing one game (Ohio St) that was challenging really came back to bite Clemson. They did a poor job of managing in-game adjustments. On defense, it was do or die with the blitz, and while they had success at times with it, they were burned more so.

My wife's observation last night. She's a casual football fan and she noticed Herbie' bias and asked me about it. When I told her, she commented that he shouldn't be in the booth...
I don't understand his being there...no one is able to overcome those type of biases...they are subconscious and appear when you least expect it. Poor management by ESPN...

Some incredible stats following last night:
- Alabama or LSU has won 8 of the last 17 natties.
- Over the last 14 years, the SEC has played for the national title 15 times.
- Five different SEC teams have played for a national title in the last 12 years. Four of them have won one.

And Herbstreit added this:

"Well the “overrated” @sec is at it again-Finished 9-2 in post season play & won the Natty. Thank goodness the officials, opposing coaches/players & somehow even announcers helped them pull off this feat. It’s now up to the @nfl draft to keep the bias going in April.

I have seen people complain about Herbstreit's perceived bias when announcing Clemson games this year. He did the Georgia Tech game and the ACC championship and perhaps more, but those were the two I watched. I didn't really buy into it until last night. I'm sure he will continue to call the games, but I bet ESPN leadership will address it with him and it will subdued going forward.

I like Herbstreit, so I want to see him in the booth for the prime time Saturday games. When he goes back and watches/listens to his own film, I imagine he will be embarrassed by it.

Seems like Herbie is trying to back track on his Clemson/Lawrence love fest

Whenever I see stats like this I just want to point out, these are Alabama’s stats with a small handful of hangers-on. Alabama has won 5 of the last 17 NCs (and 5 of the last 12). Alabama has played for the NC 7 of the last 14 years (8 if we include playoff appearances). Alabama basically represents the SEC in the national title game, and other SEC schools who make it there typically are playing....Alabama for the national title.

Counterpoint: How many board members are old enough to remember that much about a Joe Lee Dunn defense?

I know I am, but I always figure I'm in the minority on most things.

Joe Lee Dunce - the alleged genius whose genius depended basically on his all out blitz succeeding.

I always thought he was an overrated coordinator and folks eventually figured him out. Believe it or not, I could sit in my living room calling plays on the cell phone (nowadays) and run his same defense.

"Okay boys - on THIS play we're gonna send the house."

Every. Damn. Play.

Guy had the strangest looking signals I ever saw.

Not an SEC chanter...but this conference has now won the NCG 11 of the past 15 seasons. Pretty impressive. And COULD have actually won 12. Not counting 2018 as a 'COULD' have won game. Pretty obvious we were never in that game. But the conference record is certainly tough to argue on.

Guys I am sorry. Didn't see that this subject was already spoken about. Using my pad.
