Chapman : War Ears ....

I read where Williams said he was commiting to the Tide and how great he felt about his visit to the Capstone, but in the same breath went on to say he was going to continue to visit other programs and was not closing any doors. :conf2: Don't know what to read into that:conf2:
I think it's just he wants to see everything that's out there for him. If he truly wants to be at Bama, we have nothing to worry about with him taking other visits.

Color me Crimson but , I really don't believe the deal is sealed with Chapman . In late January things could look a little different . The barn could take another half dozen DT's or , we might end up with an opening after all . It's just a long time to wait and see .

The real question is if we really wanted him that badly, then why didn't we offer him a full ride, and the answer is the coaches saw something in some players that performed better than him at camp and elsewhere. I would imagine if the coaches offered him a full ride, that he would have chosen us, but a full ride is a bit of difference than a greyshirt if I was a kid's parent. And so I can see why he didn't. Even some of our own said that it was impressive that he considered us even to the end. But we move on. Brown, Murphy, Lamb, Gentry still have offers on the table. Not to mention we have McCullough and Williams already committed. Do we want 1 or 2 more fellas? I imagine 2 more if Murphy commits. Even though, maybe school will become more important once he realizes Alabama is on the line.

We have to trust the staff. Last year, a lot of folks were moaning about letting Smelley get away, but the staff had a plan and we wound up with McElroy. We have to remember, they're betting their professional futures on their plan and all we're doing is speculating on a message board.

That just doesn't make any sense. He'll not get a scholly for a whole year at AU if I understand it, and he'd only be without for one semester at Bama. I guess he just really wanted to go to Auburn. Oh well.

Yep, ask JPW how big a slap in the face it is....a slap so hard it knocked him into the starting QB spot by his Sophmore year.

that's a great point, TM....

everyone wanted Smelley, but he wasn't #2 on the staff's board- it was GM.

Chapman got a greyshirt offer b/c the thinking was, we have limited #s, we have offered Murphy, Brown, Lamb, Davis, Williams, Gentry, McCullough AHEAD of Chapman......he's talented, we'd take him next year or this year if the aformentioned fell through.

And a "slap in the face" would've been NOT offering a scholarship at all.

I agree with much of what has been said in this thread. I said all along that the Auburn full ride offer may be too much for him to turn down. And as it turned out it was. These players need to feel wanted and highly sought after. Auburn most likely played on that need and made him feel like they were the better fit for him. He will be a good DT in my opinion but Bama thinks they have better players already committed and offered.

Think about this situation from Chapman's perspective. Bama has other DTs rated ahead of him with offers. He would have to fight them off being a year behind them and pay his own way the first semester. John Parker Wilson did accept a greyshirt and obviously it has worked out for him. The difference being when Bama signed Wilson he was the only QB signed. That makes it a very different greyshirt story.

You are correct sir ! More comparable to the Drew Davis scene .
