Thanks BamaNation. Yes, my family is safe. I look all around me and see how we are truly blessed. A few feet one way or another, and it could have been so much worse. I was even able to go up into my attic to catch a lot of incoming water in big plastic tubs during the storm. I set up an igloo cooler with my garden hose attached to the drain plug, running through the attic entry, and out under my garage door...and kept pouring the collected water into it to run outside. Water damage was reduced by 95% because of this.Wow! Glad you're ok (I hope) even if your house isn't!
glad to hear your family and your shop is ok. my dad was an amateur luthier. Thanks BamaNation. Yes, my family is safe. I look all around me and see how we are truly blessed. I build acoustic guitars for a living, and my 2-story shop sits beside my home. All of my exotic woods and equipment could have been lost if the huge pine trees on the west side would have fallen east...instead of south as they did. The chickens out in the coop even made it through, riding it out in the enclosed roost...though the poor girls looked like a wet mess the next morning.
The most surreal thing about this whole situation though, is that my wife and I had just finished building this house when Hurricane Ivan made landfall here...16 years ago...to the day.
We will celebrate our 16th wedding anniversary this Friday...and I am privileged to be performing my goddaughter’s wedding ceremony on Saturday...obviously though, I could have done without the recreation of the 16th hurricane anniversary.
Are you north or south of 32?We live on the east side of Fish River, and Highway 9 has power from one end to the other, from what I understand. My poles are up but the lines are cut and will have to be re-run. I hope to have electricity by the end of the week, but that's just my hope. My in-laws live just across Bonner's Branch from me, I mean I can see their house, and they have power because they ran the lines underground. Every time there is a big storm people talk about putting their powerlines underground and then no one does it. Well, I wish I had.![]()
Very cool!!! I take it that you never caught the bug from him?glad to hear your family and your shop is ok. my dad was an amateur luthier.
i am a pretty crappy craftsman, so i didn’t even think about trying. i got to play sawdust monkey on a couple of his builds when i was little. he did teach me to sing and play though. after he passed, i had a custom 12 fret slope shoulder built with wood from his shop.Very cool!!! That’s a beautiful guitar. How long ago did you have it built, and by whom? Is that a Sitka Spruce soundboard? What wood was used for the back and sides? Sorry for all the questions, but I’m a guitar nerdi am a pretty crappy craftsman, so i didn’t even think about trying. i got to play sawdust monkey on a couple of his builds when i was little. he did teach me to sing and play though. after he passed, i had a custom 12 fret slope shoulder built with wood from his shop. Thanks for that but like you, I, too, consider (almost) everyone here extended family. My in-laws are life-long Foley residents so I've spent a TON of time in Baldwin County over the last 30 years. They still don't have power as of yesterday and have 14 huge/old pine and pecan trees down at their house.BamaNation...I’d like to thank you for your efforts to, not only give those of us who have been affected by the storm a voice...but also for bringing so much visual content about the storm to the forum.
I love this forum...and for you to offer this platform to share how this storm has affected my immediate family...with those of you who I’ve come to consider my extended family...has strangely made the struggle to recover easier...at least mentally.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart...and Roll Tide!!!
