By the way, I'm experienced in the field of "increasing productivity" so out of a curiosity:
+ Outside of Chick-fil-A, how much experience do you have providing productivity consulting to fast food companies or other franchising businesses?
+ What was your role on the consulting team? Partner? Manager? Analyst? Other?
+ Regarding your comments about sick days, vacation days and affordable insurance, please distinguish between Chick-fil-A corporate employees and employees of Chick-fil-A restaurants. Do your comments apply equally to both?
Thanks

I have consulted with three fast food places at the corporate level, including Chick-Fil-A. Why do I feel like I’m writing a cover letter?Anyway, and several really do not know the number of franchises at the store level.
In every corporate level role, including Chick-Fil-A, I was an analyst.
Corporate workers are treated 1000 times better than your employee at a normal Chick-Fil-A.
Since you have Operations experience, I will throw out a little of what we found and you can take it anyway you want to. The B.E.P. analysis showed that CFA makes a killing off their chicken. It is like they have a chicken machine or something with how quickly they get into the profit area. You know that B.E.P. does not always tell the whole story but even with 25% failure rate on the line they would still turn a lot of profit. Note they give away chicken sandwhichs for anything.
At the time they were kicking around the idea of adding things to sandwhichs, mayo, ketchup etc… Analysis showed that would slow L.C. down too much and would create log jams and extra cost.
You know from your experience that money is the worst long term motivator but CFA does the good old pay them 35 cents over min. wage so we can say we pay our people more than min wage.
Leaving out 99% of stuff here but will toss out a little of what happened. In addition to what I have said in other post in the end they came up with a tweak to a program called something like Leadership Development program for kids who recently graduated. Two years training at 8-9$ an hour and then maybe you get moved up to Salary at $30,000 in which case they will work your butt off. You work full time with no benefits and sick days etc… As one person posted they do have the option for benefits but it was made clear to us that the price would be such that most people would not be able to afford them. Dangle the owner, operator carrot in front of managers in order to get maximum work out of them. I hate to use anecdotally evidence but one of the hardest working people I know is a manager at CFA. He has been there five years stock up plenty of money and is the perfect candidate for store owner, yet looks like it will never happen. Keep all hourly part time but work them full time but use the old Mill iron fist philosophy if you mess up your hours will be cut. Still they know how to build a cult following and they do have a very successful business model. They are a Private company and therefore can get away with things other companies can’t. So much more but you get the point. I'm a big softy and just wish all hard working people could get rewarded and CFA would not do that so I went out to bigger and better things.

Not sure why you'd compare them to Walmart & Kroger instead of another fast food restaurant.

I hear you, but I can't help but believe that if things at Chick-fil-A were as bad as they seem to you, that the company would not be able to hire the necessary people to run its operations as successfully as they've been doing over the years. What we ultimately have here is a free market exchange between the parties -- labor for compensation. People are welcome to take their services elsewhere if they don't feel the exchange is "equal", but the grass is almost never as green as one thinks on the other side.
You cant since its a franchise but interesting anyway.

You are not being fair. Corporate employees are Chik-fil-a employess. The workers at the restaurants are employees of the franchisee. I question your credibilty when you can't seem to distinguish the difference. I hate to say it but as a former fast food employer, the work with the exception of management is entry level or basic work. Are you suggesting that a cashier make $10 an hour? If so, how much are you willing to pay for a sandwich? Do you realize that it is up to the franchisee how much they pay the employees not Chick-fil-a? So again, why do you keep talking as though it is Chick-fil-a who is paying meager wages? The managers of the Chick-fil-a's that I know make about $35,000-$42,000. Having ran my franchise I know that while you work long hours the skills required are not that that deem more pay than that. As far as insurance, again, employees at the restaurant are employees of the franchisee not Chick-fil-a. It is up to the franchisee whether they offer insurance. The problem with that is the franchisee usually does not have enough employees to get a rate that is cost effective enough. I tried but my employees balked at what would be $100 out of their pocket. Most employees at fast food restaurants are usually high school and college kids who could care less about insurance. Then the adults, I hate to say it, but if they are 25 and not in school, there is usually a reason that they only work for $8.00 hr (What I started my employees at). As far as being rewarded a Chick-fil-a, how many chick-fil-a's in a given circumfrence could survive competing with each other? If they awarded one to every one who worked at a Chick-fil-a in management, they would overstaurate the market and stores would have to be closing as soon as they opened one. They would be on every block. your claim that 25% close is incorrect I believe. Far higher than the actual number.
I will say, that I would recommend Firehouse to anyone who is interested.
NEW YORK  New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Friday that despite his own support of same-sex marriage, he disagrees with some of his fellow mayors who have said that the fast-food chain Chick-fil-A is not welcome in their cities because of its opposition to gay marriage.
Bloomberg said on his weekly radio show on WOR that it is inappropriate for a government entity “to look at somebody’s political views and decide whether or not they can live in the city, or operate a business in the city, or work for somebody in the city.â€Â
Bloomberg said Menino, Emanuel and Leeare “really are good mayors†but “trampling on the freedom to marry whoever you want is exactly the same as trampling on your freedom to open a store.â€Â
Chick-Fil-A restaurants are each individually owned. Don't you think there are some really good owner/bosses and some who are complete hades to work for?
Now get me my double-triple-quarter pounder w/cheeese, pleease. :cool2:
