Chili dog question

I remember ammoniated mercury and zinc oxide for scratches, etc. back in the "old" days. And then, there was this purple stuff that you put on yourself for poison ivy. Oh how poison ivy loved me. And remember iodine - ouch!!! And remember when medicine tasted so bad that you DIDN'T want to take it? And now it tastes like cherries or oranges, etc.

Oh, my cousin, Wesley, ate a whole box of ex-lax when it looked and tasted like chocolate and had to have his stomach pumped out. And THAT was back in the "old" days - lol!!!

Hey...how did the subject change from chili to medicine?

Castor oil, what a bad memory. My mom gave it to me in grapefruit juice and it was thirty years before I could drink grapefruit juice again.

Speaking of the old remedies, Do any of you OFCs remember Rosebud and Cloverine salve?

I remember seeing those but I dont remember having them used on me. Maybe they were a backup in case the castor oil didn't work.

Cloverine and Rosebud salve was sold by neighborhood kids and they got prizes for selling certain amounts. "Brother Dave" Gardner used to talk about selling them and not sending in the money. He said they are still trying to collect from him but a highway runs through where he used to live....boy, am I old or what?

bayoutider,
Here is a hot dog chili recipe that was in the Southern Living magazine.

Makes 5 cups: Prep:10 mins., cook: 1 hr.

2 pounds lean ground beef
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
1 teaspoon salt
4 teaspoons chili powder
2 1/4 cups water
1 cup ketchup
4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon pepper

Cook ground beef in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat, stirring until beef crumbles and is no longer pink; drain well. Wipe Dutch oven clean with a paper towel.

Saute onion in hot oil in Dutch oven 5 minutes. Add salt, chili powder, and beef, and cook 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in 2 1/4 cups water and next 5 ingredients. Bring to a boil; reduce heat to low, and simmer, stirring occasionally, 45 minutes or until most of the liquid evaporates.

Thanks, I will probably try that one next. Will probably make a half recipe since I can't eat that many hot dogs hehe.
