Chris Keys

Who thinks Chris Keys can make an impact next year at linebacker. Do you think between the position change and the injury happening this spring, that it could have him buried under the depth charts...at least for '06? I have been anxious to see him on D since we signed him, and I would hate to see him take a step back.

From all I've heard, he's down the depth chart. It looks more like '07 might be his chance to shine at LB.

Having heard how great an athlete he was before he got to campus, I hope we get to see it in Tuscaloosa. IMO, OLB is a position where he didn't get too far behind anyone this spring.

He's got some...

good talent and determined guys in front of him. He may not be our best guy at staying focused and out of trouble...

While all of what has been said is true, lets also hope that this little incident is a wake up call for Chris as he's got the talent to help this team...he just needs to stay focused on what's truly important, like grades and football!

I think this spring was critical for him, at this point he will have to work his butt off AND have someone in front of him get injured to give him his shot. Barring that he will have another shot at the position next spring assuming he can avoid breaking something else.

Good grief

Let's review:

Broken bones in the Fall or Spring = much diminished play the following Fall.

Stop focusing on how many stars a former recruit had like somehow, magically, they could break their leg, even wind up in a wheelchair paralyzed from the neck down, and somehow, magically they would be competing for the starting job for the next season.

If Chris Keys even sniffs the depth chart this season we are in a world of trouble.

No matter how good a player was in high school, if that player misses their senior year of high school football, then breaks their leg when they get to college AND IS ABLE TO COMPETE FOR THE STARTING JOB at their position, that tells me that we SUCK at that position.

Pray that you see Keys WAY DOWN the depth chart.

keys played his freshman year and was a mainstay on special teams. he's got excellent speed, quickness, size, knows how to hit, and showed that he was a playmaker. i was really looking forward to him receiving a lot of playing time this year until he broke his leg. the reason his leg was broken (his attitude and focus) is more of a concern to me than his ability.

Keys absolutley has a playmakers physique. I mean, even when he's standing on the sideline you can see that his physique has the ring of truth to it.

He's got good size, he's strong, he moves well and he has a hitters mentality - However, when you break bones they have to heal which equals lost time in the weight room and on the track.

i spoke with keys yesterday. he is no longer wearing a boot on his ankle and also no longer on crutches to help him walk. he is walking around normally (good news). i asked him how his ankle was doing "good" and then i asked him if he would be ready to go in fall he stated "yea, i will ready". i know that most players would say the same thing concerning an injury, but i have seen him from the week he broke his ankle up til this week, and each time i see him he looks better. he went from wheelchair, to crutches, to boot on ankle, to now nothing. so his rehab looks to be going along well.

i sure hope he is 100% or close to it come fall practice time, because he is a heckuva player no matter what position ihe is playing.

i want disagree with that, i was simply responding to your statement that if keys is able to compete for a starting spot, then our lb depth / crew sucks. bones heal quickly, from what i remember there was no nerve, tissue, or ligament damage which is the real concern in any break.

How can our linebackers suck if a player works his butt off to get to the top of the depth chart, I dont see the reasoning in that. Keys is a good player, I can still remember when he got his first playing time at safety in the S.Carolina game and he came in like a rod and drilled one of a d-lineman on accident and our d-lineman thought it was a gamecocks player and got mad. I still remember Tyler Watts saying did you see Chris Keys wow!!! I still wish he stayed at safety but oh well just hope he gets his act in order and works hard.

I have enough faith in the coaching staff to say that if he can come back from missing his senior year and broken leg and still play that he is a beast. When CMS and staff see a problem they fix it. OL was a problem last year and now we have atleast 3 big guys signed this year and OL is on the high priority list. If OLB was a problem, we would fix it.

The coaches had already decided Keys indeed had the talent to be on the field, regardless of your statements above. Unfortuntely, talent isn't all that's required, and, Mr. Keys seems to be lacking in other areas. I sincerely hope he can get his act together as quickly as his leg heals.

I think thats pretty cool that you got to talk to him. But like someone said hes not the best at staying out of trouble. maybe you could teach him the way to act while he is a member on our football program! Next time you see him tell him that I am excited about him!
