Here's the scoop from scout.com:

"One of the top quarterback prospects in the south, Smelley threw for 3,400 yards, 38 touchdowns, 60% completion percentage as a junior, and he added five rushing touchdowns.

Scouting Report:
Chris Smelley has a quick release on the ball and doesn't have to muscle up on a throw to get velocity on it. He has an easy delivery that generates plenty of power, so he doesn't sacrifice accuracy on his throws long throws. Like many of the top quarterbacks in high school these days, Smelley does a lot of his damage from the shotgun formation, but his footwork looks good enough that he should have no trouble getting under center. Smelley is a smart player that makes good decisions, and throws a quick, accurate ball."

we're getting a little spoiled with Brodie's rifle. We aren't gonna find a whole bunch of kids who can throw it as hard as he can.

Smelley doesn't have the cannon, but a good arm, nonetheless. He is extremely accurate though. Almost a 40-1 TD to INT ratio thus far this year.

And don't be hatin' on TW ;)

Not hatin' on TW at all......

that guy was tougher than a nickle steak. A great leader and QB for BAMA but he did have little trouble throwing the long ball.

I was just reading up on Smelley on the Insider ESPN recruiting thingy.

They said:

Has above average arm strength and will sometimes surprise you with arm strength you didn't think he had. Shows good touch on his underneath throws and does a nice job dropping the deep ball in over coverage.
Even having said that, they said his biggest strength was his knowledge of the game and his ability to read a defense and go through progressions. They refer to him as a "cerebral QB."

I heard that they are trying to get him to Grey shirt. Of course it depends on whether or not Tebow committs. If Tebow commits to Florida, then they wouldn't ask him to greyshirt. He would be our Qb of this class. I don't know about you guys, but I would love to see him in Crimson as our QB as well as Tebow. We don't have that long to wait to find out. I read that Tebow will finish school early and enroll in college in January, so that means we will know something before January.

Chris Smelley is one of the most talented QBs in the Southeast. He is very comparable to Auburn's prized QB commitment Neil Caudle. Some unsubstantiated rumors are floating around that he may just commit on his visit to Ole Miss this weekend. I don't believe that but anything can happen. Let's hope the Bama whooping of Ole Miss and the Bama coaching staff will have something to say about that not taking place.

I would like to see him get an offer from Bama but right not he does not have an offer but he may get one if he remains patient. Some people are speculating that he is growing tired of waiting on the Tebow situation. I certainly hope he will not rush the decision to commit, especially to Ole Miss. The facts are that OM already has two pretty good QB commitments from a Texas and a California QB that are both rated 3 stars by Scout.com and he obviously wants to play for Bama. I believe if he is remains patient he may just get that chance if either Tebow goes elsewhere or he accepts a gray shirt offer for 07. John Parker Wilson did and he was a Parade AA and he is now second string. It will be interesting to see how this one plays out for a number of reasons.

JMHO, I would rather Bama get Smelley. He's a talented Bama kid who wants to be there and I rather have that anyday than an out-of-state guy who isn't sure. And lets be honest here. Tebows parents are Florida grads, right? Realistically, I just don't think he leaves the state. Also our depth at QB seems to be pretty good at this point. Whichever QB we get would most likely redshirt, I would think. Just my two cents. :)

In reading one of the Ole Miss boards, several of the posters over there already seem to be under the impression they've got CS locked up, but there are some that say he's just using that as leverage to get an offer from Bama. I do wish he'd get an offer from Bama soon, and put an end to all the speculation especially since he seems to be a die-hard Bama fan. Supposedly, we lost Brandon Cox who was a life long Bama fan, but we can thank fRan for that one. You can't really blame the coaching staff though as their jobs depend on signing the best players so if there's someone else that rates higher then they've got to do what's best for the team.

Somehow, I hope CS doesn't get away. I get a feeling he's gonna be a good QB, & would be a good "fit" at Bama.
Im with I hope he doesnt get away I have a feeling if he gets away he may end up being like Philip Rivers, which to this day I still wonder how he got away from Bama and Auburn.

It seems to me that if Smelley and Tebow are comparable QB's, and Smelley wants to be at Bama, that we would offer Smelley the scholarship. I think the Tebow kid is going to be a solid QB, but there is no guarantee of that. Everyone wants to get talent, but I think people often underestimate the desire and will to win when recruiting. I would love to see us get both of them, but I would hate to lose Smelley because Tebow was jerking us around. I say offer Smelley the scholly, and if Tebow decides he wants to come, get someone to greyshirt.

Not so fast my friend! Tebow and Smelley are not comparable. TT is the #1 ranked QB in the nation, period. Smelley will be a good one, but Tebow is going to be a great one. I am satisfied with the recruiting of QB's this season by CMS and staff. :BigA:

Tim Tebow is one of the top QBs but actually Georgia's commit Matthew Stafford is the # 1 rated QB overall and Arkansas' commit Mitch Mustain is # 2 rated ahead of Tim Tebow who is the # 3 overall rated QB. Tebow is the # 1 rated "Dual-threat" quarterback by Rivals.com.

Rivasl.com Rivals 100

The top two are flip flopped by Scout.com. Mitch Mustain is rated # 1 QB and Matthew Stafford is rated # 2 with Tim Tebow being rated # 3 overall.

I think Smelly would be more of a hot commodity if he played at a large school. The guys at the small schools always have that knock against them. Smelly is however a big kid, pro size QB.
I seem to remember a pretty fair QB coming out of the small town of Rainbow City. ;)

I have nothing to base this on, but I am of the opinion that Tim Tebow will be playing for the Tide. Peyton Manning didn't go to Ole Miss just because his dad did. Anyone with a brain can see we run a great offense for going to the next level. I am sure that Tim Tebow has a brain in his head.

Basically, by looking at the two different years it can be noted that the majority of these top rated quarterbacks don't turn out to be stars. And guys rated seventh have just as good of a shot to be a star as the top rated guy. I think our staff is doing a great job and I am pretty confident in our situation knowing that we will likely have one of these two talented quarterbacks.
