Coach Grubb had a press conference.
Around the 4:12, he is asked about QBs.
At the 7:50 point, he is asked when he wants to have a starting QB: "Yesterday"

Mostly this is "coach-speak," saying lots of words without really saying anything. He does give some glimpses into the QB development though.

My very amateur translation:
  • Ty is the leader and is currently the most consistent, but the coaches aren't seeing the consistency needed to anoint him the starter
  • Keelon has tons of talent and can make plays that maybe the others can't, but just isn't quite ready to be a starter
  • Mack has talent but isn't ready
  • The coaching staff wants to be set on the QB, but Ty is leaving the door open enough and Keelon is just showing too many glimpses to close it completely
My guess is Simpson will be the starter against FSU, which is far from earth shattering, and will have a fairly long leash in that game. I also suspect that Mack will be the 2nd string QB on the depth chart, but it will be a scenario like 2009 where Star Jackson was the backup, but McCarron would have been the replacement if McElroy was out for an extended period of time.

I suspect you are exactly right.
I keep wondering why Simpson could not seal the deal in 2023, 2024, and now in 2025. Is he doing something in practice that is giving coaching staffs pause?

The optimist in me is wanting to believe it's more about what Keelon is doing than what Ty isn't, but I'm also always overly optimistic.

I'm hoping that means Ty isn't in practice making dumb mistakes, leaving the door open. But of course with his lack of actual playing experience, I wouldn't be surprised.

Maybe I read into it wrong, but it seemed Grubb indicated Simpson has a more consistent command of the offense than the other two. Basically, if we play tomorrow, Ty is starting, and I highly doubt that changes in 30 days. When mentioning the other two quarterbacks and what they do well, he said Keelon can make off-script plays and Mack has a big arm.

If Simpson has the most command, then he's the leader of the competition, and I don't expect that to change before the first game. Now, just how much command does he have? Having more command than the other two doesn't necessarily mean he has a GOOD command of the offense, it just means he has more than they do. That's what I want to know. On a scale of 1-10, what type of command does Ty have of the offense?

Over the last two years, I really wish Ty had gotten some real game experience with the playbook fully open. That experience woudl come in handy now.

Yeah, this is where not getting backups quality playing time potentially comes back to bite you in the rear-end.

Trying to be optimistic here.

Ty previously never really had the offense and gameplan designed for him. With a new coaching staff and offensive design change too much emphasis was put into the limited skillset and processing speed of the previous QB which seriously impaired Ty's development. With CRG being on staff now and the primary focus being on the most experienced of the group I'm looking and hoping for a solid start the first 4th of the season and progressive improvement throughout. And I really do think our defense WILL contribute to the cause and give Ty a cushion, at times, that win games this year.

If he'll just not turn the ball over and keep the offense moving forward, then I think he'll be fine. I have zero problem (in the beginning) if he hit's a lot of check downs and short passes. Just keep the plays in positive yardage and do not give it to the other team.

I think the whole not naming a starter thing has more to due with the portal than anything else.

Going forward it’s probably the smartest play.

Unless you have an entrenched starter that already plays at a high level it’s better for the depth chart to play coy.

Barring a health issue I think Ty is the starter and plays very well as long as the OL also plays well.

We will be much more efficient on offense with less 3 and outs and that will help the defense immensely.

Fwiw I’m not perfect in predicting a stater and how they will pan out.

I was wrong about Sims and wrong about Jalen Hurts over Barnett.

Actually I was wrong about Jalen Hurts several times so the moral there is don’t doubt Jalen Hurts..lol

I believe our secondary is meant to be our strength this year - so maybe judging the QB's against that is a bit of an unfair comparison..since we hope that the same secondary makes all our opponents QBs look average at best. Our QBs may be great vs other teams secondaries

You were not the only one who made that mistake...we ought to have an annual "mea culpa" meeting...
