Always deflecting.

The STUDENT SECTION is the most important of all sections. They make the most noise AND THEY PAY THE LEAST FOR THEIR SEATS.

More is expected from them than from the donors who give $500-$1M+ a year extra just for the privilege of buying tickets.

That's it.
I understand what you are saying, but in the games people are leaving, we are up 4+ TD's. The stadium could be filled to the rafters with the other team's fans, and It would not make a difference in the outcome.

Coach might want to be real careful how far he pushes this one. I know a lot of people from my home town (Meridian) go to the Bama home games. They take their wife and kids. It is about an hour and a half drive with normal traffic. It is probably over two hours with game day traffic. If the game is absolutely not in question (like the Arkansas game) then their (the fans) mindset shifts to trying to avoid getting back extremely late so they can get the kids in bed and be back up to go to church the next morning. To be honest, they paid for their tickets so now chastising them for not staying at a game that has turned into a scrimmage may not be the wisest thing to do.

I think the bigger issue is with the student section because it's very easy to see when a number of them leave early. At every school, there are always fans with young children who leave early (my cousin is also one that goes regularly and takes his younger sons; they leave early in those blowouts too).

As always, my dad and I were there until the end of the Arkansas game. We don't leave games early and we have to drive back to Montgomery after each one. We will be there until the end of the Tennessee game too. I understand both sides of the argument, but it was pretty disappointing to have a half-filled stadium at the beginning of the 4th quarter. I yelled doubly loud to help preserve the shutout for the backups. :)

Bamabuzzard - I don't think the folks from Meridian (or Mobile, or Biloxi or anywhere else) are the ones that Coach Saban is specifically addressing. Those few who may hit the road for personal reasons don't leave "huge, empty gaps" in the stadium.

I know quite a few students who attend the University right now & most are in the "Greek System". They ALL talk about attending games until halftime or shortly thereafter, & then leaving for their designated Frat/Sorority houses. Once there, they continue to watch the game on a huge TV and indulge in "whatever they can put their hands on"!

I'm just amazed that the highest paid coach in NCAA football (with the currently ranked #1 team in the nation) should even have to ask folks to stay for games. I guess everybody is different. When we make the drive from Mobile, we stay our "happy little butts" in our seats until the game ends. We then hang around a bit for the traffic to thin before heading home (and yes, we've driven home many times during the early am hours). It's tough, but well worth it.

I agree 100%. If the students of the University don't want to support their team, sell those darn tickets (or as Coach Saban said -- give them away)/ There are thousands of folks who would absolutely love to attend a game. Talk about complacent. Seems student's want their school to have the "best program, best coach, & best team", but aren't even willing to stay the entire game to support them? Spoiled...
It's mostly the Greeks. That's what they did when I was a student.

My crew and i would sit fairly close to "their" section and it was pretty much the same every game day.

While I don't have a problem with what you say in this post, and I agree with others that this was probably not Saban's "target audience", I don't think that Saban needs to be careful about offending folks in this circumstance.

Alabama is in a very good place right now. Offended or not, folks from hours away will keep coming. If they choose not to, there are tens of thousands who will gladly buy their tickets.

Reflect for a minute here. How cool is it that THIS is what we're discussing 2 days prior to Tennessee? I remember years where we worried about who our QB would be (Pennington? Again?). If we could slow down Peyton? How we could prevent the "TVA" from steamrolling our defense? Now we're worried about ATTENDANCE. This is an awesome time to be an Alabama fan. Always remember that. If folks don't want to stay and watch the backups run the vanilla offense, so be it.

I agree that some student seating should be sold for more tide pride seating. They expanded the student seating in the south end zone this year after complaints from students about not having enough seating, But it is time to reclaim those seats!!! No one should be leaving unless you become quiet sick suddenly. Also don't complain about the traffic getting off campus. I lived in Tuscaloosa most of my life. I know live in north Alabama, and drive home frequently after games. Explore the city on a non game day or come early to explore. Ask a local ....There are several ways to get off campus and back to the interstate without doing in traffic jams. Many neighborhoods will lead you off campus easily. Try exploring Jack Warner parkway to crescent ridge road through Holt and back to Univ Blvd to get to interstate much easier.

There are not 100,000 fans in Alabama who are capable of attending a game and would always sit until the very end of a blowout regardless of time, weather or traffic.

Some of y'all need to realize that the average fan is not as fanatical as the rest of us.

And if you think student tickets are "cheap," then I've got a nice bill from the Department of Education I'd like to show you.

This is far more funny that you meant it to be, no doubt.

To each his on. This argument is much like the one about being a "real" fan or not. You're not a real fan if you don't (insert someone's made up criteria). Fans go to football games for entertainment. Everyone's level of entertainment is different. Some people come hell or high water are going to stay to the very end no matter what. And that is fine. That is their right. They purchased the ticket. But for other people their entertainment level ends when the game is so bad out of hand that the coach is getting upset on the sidelines because HIS PLAYERS are scoring. When it gets to where the coach of my favorite team doesn't want the team to score then the game is over. Many people do not find entertainment in that and are ready to go. I see absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I understand the "supporting the team" thing. Well many people "supported the team" when they opened their wallet, forked out the money to buy a ticket, showed up and cheered. Personally, I would have stayed the entire game. We stayed the entire game last year when we played Michigan. But I don't look down on others who don't. I completely understand. Football is a passion for many people. But when it's gotten to the point where we're looking down on people or reprimanding them for leaving a game early when the game has gotten so out of hand that the goal isn't even to score anymore then it's gotten a bit ridiculous.

The bright side of this is what a great problem to have. Complaining because fans are leaving early due to absolute maulings on the field is a good problem to have.
