Coaching fit.

I'm definitely in the minority, but I still have faith in this offensive coaching. I don't know if it's Kalen requiring it or Ryan doing it himself. But I definitely still respect that they ran the ball as much as they did without the success. It showcases balance is still very important to them. I think they ran the ball 47% of the time

This team has struggled to have a traditional run game for a number of years now even under Coach Saban. Milroe was the run game recently.

Simpson definitely has his strengths, but running the ball was definitely not one of them as he is a fumble waiting to happen and took unnecessary hits often. Furthermore, his lack of threat is a runner and his lack of deep ball ability allow teams to really push up against our offense and that's why they struggled so hard with the top defenses that we faced the last couple of months which seems like every week.

Line play is clearly a problem as well. But overall they're were just some crazy things that happened to this offense last year, that hopefully get washed away this off-season.

I mean the wide receiver play as well was an issue. Whether he was supposed to be or not, everyone's going to look at Ryan Williams as a leader for this team... When the leader for this team is the leader in drop passes and oftentimes with completely a no-show in terms of any sort of production. It is heavy for the roster as a whole.

But it is year three now and it's time to truly get it together coach. You have your staff in place. You have your recruit someplace. The transfer portal kids as well.

This came up last year when Milroe heavily skewed them, I ran the numbers.

The QB usage rate was a bit over 63%, almost identical to last year, and his last year in Washington as well. This means they couldn't have handed off more than 37% of the time (that 37% includes the hand offs to the receiver for the record). I didn't bother to differentiate QB sacks from scrambles and that sort of thing, but they technically count as runs even though obviously a QB going back to pass is not handing it off.

Fair enough and I accounted for all of that, but just watching the game you can still see them wanting to implement the run game....it just didn't work. It hasn't worked for years. It's got to get better. I'm also impressed that they still were able to be positive with time of possession while being such a pass happy team... Just showcases a mindsetthat a run game would help drastically.

I also saw weak play at times from the blocking, but also a lack of ability from some of the backs to hit openings or break solo tackling.

As I said, at this point Kalen has to fix it... Coaching, line, backs... All of it.

But I don't think this QB was a huge positive for the run game in particular.

Yes it seems like amateur hour

I do agree with that part. For instance the same basic usage rates with Milroe as QB and I didn't see any real attempt or what have you to change things. I did get the idea that Grubb actually wanted to run more, but it was woefully ineffective.

So, if they make the right portal and staff changes, I think there's hope. But... it has to be meaningful changes.
