Cold Pizza

As someone who has lived outside of the South for several years now, I will tell that I have experienced discrimination due to my light Southern accent. It is completely unjustified, unjust, and rampant. It is no different then teasing someone based on their skin color or ethnicity. It does seem that the liberal PC faction haven't included Southerners in their list of protected people. It's not that the comments I hear (on tv, internet, etc.) are offensive by themself, it's the double standard that enrages me.

I'm sure someone would take that up as pro bono work. It seems that its ok to stereotype the South but we're bigots if we stereotype anyone else. Its about time a group of folks from the South stands up for who we are and what we believe in and quit getting railroaded.
When you allow the actions of others to dictate what you do, you become a slave to them. I would just laugh about it and remember that as long as people from other regions of the country think so poorly of us, they will not want to move here. That is a winning situation for me.

haha. good point.

No, the problem is that we've had thick skin for too dang long and as a result, we are now the designated whipping boy for the rest of the nation. Southerners in general and White male Southerners in particular are fair game for everyone and the ever popular political correctness never applies to us.:mad2:

Don't let it get to ya TM. Remember what they say about opinions.... Some are just bigger than others.

We only have to put up with their ignorance once in a while. Their poor wives have to live with it every day.

First of all, let me agree with you on your first point. I've lived in Chicago for 2.5 years and people DEFINITELY stereotype me because I'm from the South. And in what way do they stereotype, you ask? They think we're all narrow minded.  So basically, what happens is they perpetuate the very thing they try to call us out on. :rolleye2:

Secondly, it urks me that you try to make this into a political conservatives vs. liberals/"us vs. them" battle. You are too quick to assume that everyone on here, 99% of whom are southern born and raised, automatically share your same social/political views just because we're Alabamians. I am proud of my southern heritage and am a proud UA alumus and Tidefans member. However, I consider myself "liberal" by most people's definition, and I couldn't be more proud of that fact. It just seems that everytime I turn around on here someone is making snide comments about 'them darn liberals' as if everyone on here should share their same social/political views, and if they don't then they don't deserve your respect anyway.

I would suggest leaving the 'liberal' talk on the non-sports board. So ALL us die hard Bama fans can enjoy the FOOTBALL boad.

I don't see them making fun of anyone else. Once they start picking on everyone equally, I will take it lightly. We all know that won't happen. In turn, I won't lighten up about this. Why are we the bad guys?

you are right. political correctness doesn't apply to people in the deep south. without breaking laws, there is no answer to the problem. and the southerners
that are being insulted will not break laws. but they will fight and die to uphold and enforce them.

There is a problem if you really take this daytime sports talkshow this seriously. Plus, everybody in the South already knows that 26-23 is 3. That definately won't cut it. Duh.

it's definitely a bonehead thing to say, but the south ain't the only place to be constantly ridiculed. my wife is from new jersey, and i'm not sure there's a single state that's any more frequently maligned.

heck, i made fun of jersey until i met her and spent some time there. the biggest shock was that i found they have literally the best produce i've ever found anywhere. plus, minus the gold chains, wife-beater t-shirts, and grating accents, jersyans are basically just like southerners...blue collar, roughneck, devoted to their families first, with sports teams and religion (albeit catholicism or judaism) running a close second.

espn is mtv with sports. when they start talking, i change the channel.

That's always been my philosophy. While in the USAF, I travelled extensively in the northern US. I found a lot of people who just assumed that I was a typical southern, collard green eating, barefoot, wife beating, illiterate, beer drinking redneck who dated my cousin. I just let them keep on thinking it and told them that I was one of the more sophisticated ones in my home town. I don't think any of them would ever dare get any closer than Ft. Wayne. :biggrin2:

BTW, I didn't date my cousin. At least, I never took her anywhere! :biggrin2:

1. Miami is not the Deep South, by any stretch of the imagination.
2. 26-23 considering the situation Shula came into was not that reason he was let go. It was the lack of improvement over those years, especially the last year, that got Mike sacked. Who knows how he might do as the head coach of the Phins?
At any rate, this was just an opportunity for a journalist to show his ignorance and his anti-southern bigotry. Neither should be surprising.

I was just watching 1st and 10 on ESPN, and i cannot believe what they just said. They were talking about Miami interviewing Shula. The guest analyst opposite Skip Bayless said, "I know their math skills in the Deep South aren't that good, but even they can figure out that 26-23 won't cut it."

Can you BELIEVE this garbage? How could any self-respecting news organization air this trash? How is stereotyping a faction of this country any different than being racist? They wouldn't allow racist comments on their network, and it offends me deeply that they would air this.

I wonder if he realized that Skip graduated from Vandy. I'm sure Skip didn't take kindly to that.

I proudly extend the finger to ESPN and all its producers. You guys can take your self-righteous manure elsewhere.

I will now take my "sub-par math skills" and do my calculus III homework.

What sub-par math skills? We know 2 +2 = 3rd and 6. What more do we need to know?

Thanks to everyone who has provided me great humor today!
Whenever I hear disparaging comments about the South, Alabama Football, or anything southern-men included!-I am reminded of this quip by Joe Willie given to a reporter who asked him if he majored in basketweaving @ Alabama:
No, man, I majored in journalism. Is was easier."

LOL :BigA:
