He was a bad GM but a good HC - easily the best in their short history. Won the division in 4 of his 6 seasons, 4 of the ?6? division titles in their history. Deshaun Watson expressed his sincere appreciation for all that he learned from O’Brien about playing QB (same as Bryce) at a time that it was unpopular to do so. Though I also look forward to a new OC, IMO, he’s not the incompetent idiot that some put forth. He has a real degree from Brown, an Ivy League school, among other accomplishments such as winning the Paul Bryant college football HC of the year at PSU doing a remarkable job with PSU QB under the most difficult circumstances, in the immediate aftermath of the Sandusky scandal.

i don’t mean to play OB’s defender 🙂but I have a hard time believing some of the comments about the man’s overall intelligence and accomplishments; it diminishes credibility. His performance was lacking in some real ways - no need to imagine things.
My view about what Bob has demonstrated at Alabama, calling plays from the booth, is exactly opposite from what I believe is occurring in college and the NFL is a move toward more rapid play calling to prevent personnel changes on the defensive side of the ball. I look at the teams like the Rams who have General Managers working toward a Super Bowl, how they manage play calling, and I just don't see a place for BOB. There are old line franchises like Chicago that have had around 30 QB's while the Packers have had 2 so there may be a spot for BOB. I hope there is!

I just hope y’all are prepared when it might be reported that Dooley gets a promotion. Not saying it’s necessarily an OC job, but I just wouldn’t be shocked to see some rumblings of him getting a bigger job on staff or somewhere else. He is well respected in coaching circles.

Sometimes, a guy is a great second-in-command, but just doesn’t have what it takes to be the CEO. There’s no shame in that, especially if you realize it yourself.

What I wouldn’t give to have Homer Smith or Norm Chow or Norv Turner (all as they were in their prime, of course) as OC.

I don’t know enough about Dooley to comment, but maybe he’s one of that type?

It would hurt recruiting if he was the OC

Can he coach WRs? Safeties? I dont think he would be the OC............I think Saban already has someone tabbed from the outside
And I agree w/B1GTIDE, he wouldn't help recruiting.................Bama needs someone else in that role. I think Dooley wouldn't be the best for it

I would be slow to judge. Half this board was 100% against Sark getting hired back in 2019. Dooley has been around Saban for a long time and has been on pretty much every offensive staff position. As an OC… He had Mizzou the 13 best offense in the country.

Mostly he has been known for his ability to coach Wrs and TEs

And how much has he learned this time around? I believe that good, smart coaches are always learning...or at least should be.

You do realize Brian Daboll never recruited in his life and about 99% of the recruits probably had no clue who he was.

Everyone seems glued on the OC being the recruiter, but when you actually start digging you start to see that more often than not it’s some random position coach on the opposite side of the ball. Plus based on our coordinators for the past 2 years we should have one of the worst recruiting classes in the dynasty but it’s one of the best even with the knowledge that atleast one of them is leaving.

I’m not arguing for Dooley getting the OC job, but just don’t be surprised if he gets a promotion. He really is a great coach on staff or else he wouldn’t keep getting a lot of job offers

It would hurt recruiting more if he is a position coach but not OC. The coordinators are not as active in recruiting.

I think CNS will try to keep Wiggins. He is a good recruiter, solid position coach when he has the talent. Bob made it virtually impossible to evaluate skill positions and highlight our OL was subpar.

It would hurt recruiting if he was the OC

I wanted Sark myself................if Dooley is good at WRs and TEs then that is where I would put him , if Wiggins leaves

Sounds like I’ve heard this list before 🤷🏼‍♂️
Dooley said there are five main categories that he weighs:

  • Size and speed for that player’s position.
  • Can the player do the things athletically that’s required for that position?
  • Critical factors such as toughness, effort and passion.
  • The player’s character.
  • The player’s academic history.

Some of your fellow fans suck and think that if they just got some 6th round draft pick QB, they could find lightning in a bottle again. They seriously think every single issue they had this year is all Mac and his "noodle arm" fault.
Actually, they don’t , probably 60 % know it was the failed OC experiment and Mac is their QB, .20% they just aren’t talented enough and that includes the QB and 20% that Mac is the problem and Zappe should start
