Commentary on CAG Not Being Fired This Year

As we've seen in the past, scheduling and beating teams with high rpi's can be detrimental, but scheduling and losing to teams with high rpi's is downright disastrous. We had at least four "bad losses" this year, and with the overall lack of strength in the conference our chances for "quality wins" were few and far between. Some may consider the win over UK a "quality win", but when we played UF, Mizzo, and OM we, for the most part, didn't show up.

Some of our problems this season were physical (i.e. injuries to key players), but a lot of our problems were mental. We had absolutely no mental toughness. We couldn't close out games or get up for big games. Several times this year down the stretch we had our backs against the wall, and instead of coming out swinging we folded. Some say it's the players, but if we're not mentally prepared it's coaching. While I think it would be a huge mistake for Bama to get rid of CAG, this season was far from his best. Twenty wins may impress some, but at least half our losses were horrible...and some of our wins weren't that great either. Hopefully we learn from this year and are better next season.

I'm willing to hold out that this team will be much better next year assuming Releford stays (he should, probably will). We will have a pretty deep and veteran team by college standards. Two Junior centers, a senior and junior starting backcourt, and three wing types with plenty of playing time.

If next year they can't make the next step, it probably isn't coming. Of course, Alabama's luck Releford gets bad advise and goes pro.

I think that unlike 20 or 30 years ago NCAA basketball has become a larger field due to parity and 20 wins is something that you want to be a steady outcome for your program. Think about it, Most teams have 12 - 15 players on the bench as opposed to football. Participation in High School Basketball is consistently the most popular sport region wide in the United States, while HS Football is popular only in some regions (Our HS recently voted to do away with HS football due to lack of interest by students and the number of injuries). All of those Basketball players have to have somewhere to go! That's why Mid - Majors are now included in the scenario. The NCAA tournament has broadened it's scope due to parity.

Let's face it. You are what you eat, and if you don't play a tough schedule you end up being soft. Look at FSU football. They run through the ACC and get no respect from the BCS. In the old Metro Conference for Basketball Louisville had a killer OC Schedule and would get beat up playing people like UK, Georgetown, Syracuse, etc...., but when they went into conference play they would really only have to beat Memphis State and they usually ran the table.

A basketball season is meant to build team chemistry for the big dance or your season ending playoffs. Occasionally you get beat, but you have to hope that you are able to make the playoffs and build your team chemistry. You can't approach Basketball with a Football mentality when it comes to being a fan or you will set yourself up to be disappointed.

I think there's a lot of fear among football fans that, starting with the new playoff, the effect is going to be that football will gradually convert to the basketball way of thinking...

I don't think that it is going to effect football that much except for extra games that your players have to be healthy. I laugh at that Buffalo Wild Wings commercial about a 256 team Tournament, but .........

While I agree with your assessment because you make some very valid points, I also think twenty wins is pretty solid for a team with absolutely no inside presence and very little consistency in our outside shooting. I think Grant has done a very good job getting us to twenty wins with the limited roster we have this year. Yes, I understand that he is in charge of filling the roster with capable players. I also understand that you can't control injuries and that all players don't develop like coaches think they might. I know we shouldn't have lost a few of the games that we lost this year, but I think a true evaluation of Coach Grant should wait until after next season. Of course, that is just one man's opinion. Roll Tide!

Totally agree! Lack of the inside game really handcuffed our team. Gueye has developed his game, but just not fast enough.

Consequently, my best job coaching this year wasn't on any of our wins, but when we traveled to Grand Canyon with only 6 players (Minus our star) and lost by 2. We actually had a chance to win, but the last second 3 bounced of the rim.

Even if the NCAA went to a full blown playoff for football, with the ten conference champs and six at large team, it would still be hard for a team to get in with more than one loss.

With the explosion of the holiday tournaments that allow teams to play extra games over the limit and also conference tournaments, a 20 win season isn't as impressive as it once was.

There are never 16 one loss teams of fewer teams in FBS. You'd have plenty of 2 loss teams and probably some 3 loss teams.

Even if we were to fire CAG who would we get because we are not getting the home run hire like we did with saban its not going to happen

Oh..Oh... Tom Izzzzzzzzzz...Nevermind! :p on TideFans.com:p on TideFans.com:p on TideFans.com

He didnt even leave msu for the cavaliers but he is going to leave to come coach at bama

At a recent Red Elephant Club meeting, Coach Moore said that we were going to make a run at Izzo. However, Michigan State got on a run in the NCAA Tournament, and Kentucky had just fired their coach. Moore said they were afraid of Donovan going to UK and Grant taking Donovan's place at UF before we talked to Grant. So, we went ahead and offered Grant.

Whether Izzo would have considered leaving MSU is a long shot. But, we were going to try--according to Coach Moore.

Tom Izzo and his 1-3-1 zone offense (Which I cherish) will die at Michigan State.
