Can someone share what you think or know about the current situation. As you all know this is going to be an area of concern this year.

Kicking game is important, I'm right there with you on that one.

It's only a concern if there are problems (like lack of talented kickers).

I am somewhat hopeful that some of the work that went into sorting it out last year will yield positive results this year.

I believe Jamie Christensen is a bright spot for the Tide...

Jaime has a leg and I'm not worried as long as he's percise, and also I beleieve we have a walk on coming on also and I beleieve his name is Andrew Friedman, and there are a few more kickers onthe team but they are ust lacking playing time!

Over on TI they have a certain hour where everyone holds hands and prays for a kicker. Maybe we should do the same. I nominate 2PM as the official "Pray for a kicker" hour.

Pet pev...

It really gets me why Bama should have a poor field goal kicker. With points coming at a premium it seems like this would be a priority. I know these guys usually work their way into a schooly but you have to admit this area of our game just hasn't been up to par. Remember the days when Bear used to talk about the importance of the kicking game?

of years ago, I hope Coach Shula goes for it on 4th down just about everytime. The place kicking makes me VERY nervous unless a halfway decent kicker can be found.

We have addressed this before. The place kicking problem two seasons ago was NOT the result of a bad kicker but the snapper and holder. Place kicking is a three stage engine and if the first two don't perform well consistantly, the third most likely won't either. Last year was much improved with the same kicker and different snapper and holder. This year we start over from scratch.

What ever happened to the kicker that was supposed to be walking on here from this past recruiting class? He was supposed to be one of the best kickers in the nation, anyone know what I am talking about or if he committed to somewhere else?

I'm also more worried about punting, it was pretty awful last year. Christensen has a strong leg, if he has decent accuracy we should be okay, assuming snapper and holder are not problems. Our punting situation is scary.

From my sources Jamie has been working ALL SUMMER LONG

on his accuracy and he is ready to show what he can do! I'm pretty excited to have a kid with the leg strength of his and "if" his accuracy is there, we'll end up with a kicker like we used to have!

As for punting, Schatz simply didn't (as of last spring) have the leg strength to kick the ball consistanty 40+ yards and that's a concern for me. However, I have no idea how his work has gone this summer and it is possible he's worked hard and added muscle to his leg and his technique is better giving him a good leg...TIME WILL TELL, but that time is next week! The one thing you can count on is that invited walk-ons will get a serious look!

I am pretty optimistic about Andrew Friedman, though I say that without having seen him personally. Had Zook not been fired, he would have had a scholarship offer to Florida. Panthers kicker Jon Kasay is a friend of the family, and Andrew has also been sent to work with Adam Vinatieri's kicking coach before reporting to campus. I am told that he is a very hard worker and he is not coming in with the intention of sitting on the bench. If he does win the job, his family will be paying for his freshman year, so he also has the motivation of trying to earn a scholarship for his sophomore year.

The coaching staff is obviously pretty high on him, as they have maintained very regular contact with him to make sure that he did not consider taking a scholarship offer elsewhere.
