Concerning Diego Pavia( AKA Johnny Manzel II IMHO ), Is a Dedicated Spy Worth The Potential Reward Vs. The Risk?

Our defensive scheme/alignment is the most concerning thing this game. Time and again the d gets out flanked/leveraged before the snap. So much so it’s mind boggling, not sure why uga didn’t just run outside all game and some dives to keep us honest. Vandy like last year might just go on the edge and let a good decision maker like pavia feast. Think Hubbard might need to be a spy heat seeking missile all game. Another concern is the decision making of Sabb has been rather poor so moving Hubbard as a spy could hurt the back end. Not sure who else would be a better spy making an actual impact. Think our d goes as Hubbard goes.
I agree our gap discipline has to improve against Vandy. We need a spy in this game that might have to be Hubbard. We have to do a better job to contain the jet sweeps and run things back into the middle. Jackson needs to stay out in the flat more to contain the outside runs.

Bama would have won last year against Vanderbilt without the two turnovers and critical penalties on 4th down. This season, the team and coaches seem to be better focused and disciplined. If they stick to what we have seen after the FSU game, Bama will blow out Vanderbilt.

ETA: I got a little off topic... As far as defending the Vanderbilt quarterback, I think the defense should be prepared to spy but start out in normal defense which should be fine.

I think we all know the reason why our offense sucked last year. That problem has CLEARLY been fixed. But yes, I am not going to consider Vandy an easy win anymore, and hopefully, neither will the team. After what happened last year, if we don't take them seriously, then something is truly wrong. Personally, I think we keep the intensity going.
No matter how much better we are at the QB position this year than last, the offense really wasn't the problem against Vandy last year.

The defense completely blew it in that game.

I watched the Vandy game against South Carolina, the only SEC team they face so far. It was a close game until Sellers got injured. Vandy was up 14-7 at the half. The gamecocks defense played without any sound discipline and vandy took advantage of it in the 2nd half. The ganecocks offense was pitiful without Sellers, their offense had THREE turnovers and turnover on downs! I still can't believe they were ranked in the Top 15 in pre season. Pavia finished the game 18/25 177 yards, 2 TDs and 1 interception. Solid performance, but nothing special. The turnovers , Sellers out for the game, and lack of sound defense really hurt SC. Vandy defense had its best showing of the season thus far against the gamecocks.

The defense was horrible in that game, yes. But they gave the offense three separate opportunities to at least tie or take the lead, and the offense turned it over every time. You can't have a horrible QB AND a horrible DC. You can live with a horrible DC if your QB is playing lights out.

Agree it was on the defense last year but it's not just a better qb, with our group of receivers if it was too be a shootout I really like our chances.

Vanderbilt snuck up on Bama last year. They won't have that going for them Saturday. In fact, they will have Bama full and individed attention.

Too many players from last year's team is on this year, including the starting QB. Will it be a tough and competitive game? Yes. I do believe Bama will get this win.

Or if the defense could have stopped anything.

The turnovers were bad...but we scored 35.

No way we should lose to a 4 foot tall QB running the option for Vandy if we score 35 points.

Milroe was terrible...the defense was "terribler".

The flip side is that our offense could not sustain any drives over 2 minutes. When we scored, it was within 4-5 plays. Our defense was horrible that game against the run, but the offense did them no favors. Thankfully, one of those issues has been fixed.

In terms of limiting Pavia and the offense, I think it’s a “pick your poison” scenario somewhat. First, we must control the game from a possession standpoint. Offensively, control time of possession, and above all, score TD’s, not settling for FG’s. Limit Vandy and Pavia’s opportunities.

This is where the role of the defensive analysts can be crucial to the team’s success. Review every scrap of tape you can find going back to Pavia’s Utah State days. Who had the most success shutting him down or limiting him? Can we integrate some of those concepts defensively? My thought is you have to make Pavia and Vandy “one dimension as possible”.

The problem I think we face is that last year Oklahoma was “one dimensional”’ coming into the game due to WR injuries and Arnold at QB gashed us for 130 yards on the ground. Granted our offense was pathetic and did our defense no favors, but still the point remains. Pavia is a more than adequate passer, but it is his legs that gets first downs and extends drives.

I hope we don't do that...

yeah, i don’t think we’ll see the comedy of errors keystone kops remake that we coughed up on the field last year

they are going to get an absurd amount of hype this week with a lot of hot take idiots picking them to win. I think we will be laser focused

We have to limit the yards after contact in their running game. They got 2-4 yards after every tackle last year...kept them in 3rd and short...if we can make them 3rd and 5+ it limits Pavia's options...
