I remember from history class that FDR was going to pack the Supreme Court with favorable justices, but some kind of compromise was reached.

Given that the current GOP has never been about compromise, I would think adding at least three new justices to the Court would be a start (should the Democrats take the Senate in November).

If the next President really wanted to get salty, double the number just to tee off the Republicans, who took every opportunity to sidestep collegiality and fair play in Supreme Court nominations. Merrick Garland and the accused rapist (Kavanaugh) come to mind.

You do realize that any party's control over the Presidency and the Senate is not likely to be a given forever?

Probably as well as he remembers that arguments regarding the appointment of a USSC in the last year of a presidential term used to be something that republicans were against.

Be very careful what you wish for.

He tried, but it was soundly rejected by both Republicans and Democrats.
FDR did try to pack the Supreme Court, and he was shut down by both sides of the aisle.

But that was then and this is now. If the Democrats control both houses of Congress and the White House after the election, I fully expect them to pack SCOTUS.

It’s a risky gamble, even today. While the left wing of the Democratic Party will cheer loud and long, they’re going to vote blue anyway. It could, however, alienate what little remains of the center, and that could come back to bite them. Except.....

I expect them to CYA with, as Earle hinted, statehood for DC and Puerto Rico. Four guaranteed Democratic Senate seats. Maybe Guam and/or American Samoa maybe not. Possibly as many as 8 senate seats there, and 12 Electoral College votes.

I’d anticipate a major backlash on all that, so I’d further expect them to do it in 1Q2021 — gives the public, most of whom have the attention span of a gnat, 4 years for the memory to fade and get used to the new normal.

I don't know why DC should be a state. There are 19 cities in the US with a larger population than DC. The population of Washington is about 705,000. California has a population of 39.51 million. The representation of Californians in the senate would be further diluted.

I wouldn't mind DC being incorporated into Maryland or Virginia or just to be allowed to vote for the senators of one of those two states. That way they could vote for senators.

I'm interested in hearing the arguments for why DC should become a state.

Wyoming and Vermont have smaller populations.

ETA - I’m all for Harris county seceding. We’d be bigger in size and population than Luxembourg. And I could be king. 😆

That's an argument for Wyoming and Vermont being over represented.

Can I be your SoS? or maybe a knight? or court jester?

The only legitimate argument is the lack of representation. Others (size, fiscal ability, etc), are straw men.

The real reason, though, is the injection of two 100% guaranteed Democratic Senate seats.
There were a lot more legitimate reasons than that. But, yes, the purpose would be to put 2 more democrats in the Senate. I don't have a problem with that. Right now there are a ton of GOP seats handed out in the senate because of states that offer America a lot less than DC does.
