We'll see what they experts say when there's more data, but for now, it appears Omicron doesn't care if you're vaccinated, and we now know those who are infected can spread it, vaccinated or not. How much the vaxxed/unvaxxed spread it is the question.

Thankfully, while the numbers are up, it does indeed appear that Omicron is less deadly than Delta. My parents currently have COVID, and they are unvaxxed and in their 70's. They both feel 'meh', but are fine otherwise. They almost certainly got it from one of their vaccinated grandkids who was sick (home test said the kid was negative, but it wasn't accurate - later results from lab test taken the day before showed infection).

Still hopeful that Omicron is the direction COVID is heading. Everyone I know that's had it (while there are quite a few, it's admittedly anecdotal evidence) has been mildly ill for a few days then recovered. No hospitalizations or deaths.

I guess at some point we may just have to admit that there's nothing we can (currently) do about this one.

Part of the reason I've been rather "mild" (although make no mistake, I'm pro-vaxx) on this has been time after time someone pipes up and says something one way or the other - and then boom. Folks attend anti-vaxx rallies and die after boasting about it. Whoopi tests positive (and a number of others) and the sharks circle on that, too (although it seems the difference generally is one you die and one you get sick).

I just never wanted to be that guy that said, "get vaxxed" and hear, "Well, you got it and I didn't," which is why my approach has always been "yes, you can get it vaxxed, but you have a MUCH BETTER chance vaxxed than not vaxxed." I learned a long time ago - and it's part of why I'd never be a good politician or at least one who gets the stories about me - that you be as transparent as possible and admit you may not fully know or understand something, but you will listen to those who DO know or at least can make better guesses than you.

But the average American - and maybe I benefited from spending five of my formative years in Europe, two of which we actually lived off the base and in the neighborhoods of the locals - cannot process a thought longer than a bumper sticker slogan.

And then they spend the rest of that time quoting the slogan.

(Side note: I'm at my parents' house. I've not watched network or cable news in about ten years because it's largely nothing but entertainment, but Dad has the worst on: Fox. Half-listening I got some world class gaslighting from Tucker, Sean, and then Ingraham, the latter of whom used to be at least partly respectable. Prefacing every point with "ah freedoms." Dear God. The positive is that Dad's steady diet of this has now UP TO A POINT at least seen him suddenly resist certain parts of it, not enough to be sure).

Btw - slept fantastic last night. Been a long time since I was on a comfortable in a comfortable room out in the country and the rooster awakened me. Good times.

Did you mean Ingraham, the last of them? Or Sean? I was not aware any of them had been "partly respectable"...

That has been a major problem for many who are grossly un/mis informed.

Men’s tennis world No. 1 Novak Djokovic said on Tuesday that he had received an exemption to play in this month’s Australian Open despite rules the country and the tournament have put in place requiring players to be vaccinated against Covid-19 to participate.

Djokovic, who has said publicly that he didn’t want to be vaccinated, indicated that he had received an unspecified medical exemption to enter the country. He made the announcement in a social media post that showed him with his luggage on an airport tarmac, ready to fly to Australia.

Ingraham back about 15 years ago was - by comparison with Hannity and Tucker anyway - semi-decent. She ticked me off a few nights before the 2004 election on CNN when all she was capable of doing was reverting back to "John Kerry didn't answer this question," but largely she was at least (from the times I saw her) within shouting distance of reason.

She was spouting next-level nonsense last night. I always knew she was a partisan, but let me tell you what all three of them reminded me of: that 1984 Apple commercial where the zombie-looking folks are watching the screen and being indoctrinated. It was weird.

Years ago - about 15 or so - I'd at least defend Fox News as "yes, they're biased but not so bad except on the opinion shows that you can't at least find reality." Because I didn't watch them for years - and the criticisms were the same word-for-word - I used to dismiss that criticism as, "Look, I've been hearing that since 1996, and while I'm the first to admit they clearly slant the news to the right, it tends to be within at least the standard deviation of truth."

But two years ago I saw it when I came to see Dad - forced to watch it basically - and I COULD NOT BELIEVE the level of cartoon it had become. It finally became what I'd heard it was for many years previous. Worse even. It's like an SNL parody of a real news network that wants to be taken seriously.

(Bear in mind, I'd rather READ stuff on my own than watch TV as far as news goes. But I've pointed out to some younger folks, "Go watch those old newscasts of Cronkite, Reynolds, or Huntley-Brinkley - and you absolutely CANNOT tell what political party they'll be supporting in the election").

The virus has never cared, but it does matter.

Multiple studies show similar results - a reduction in infection and a reduction in disease. Vaccination absolutely matters.

Can someone still become infected and pass it along to others if vaccinated? Absolutely. Not too much different there. But it absolutely matters.

Omicron does appear to be "milder", causing a lower percentage of hospitalizations and deaths compared to Delta; but that puts it back near the original SARS-CoV-2 virus that was 5-10x deadlier than the flu and nowhere near the category of "just a cold" that some are hanging their hat on.

And lots of people are still getting sick and dying - mostly unvaccinated (not surprisingly).

More kids are also becoming infected and hospitalized - along with their parents and grandparents - and some are dying.

The effect of the unvaccinated on the medical system is high now and growing exponentially as cases increase exponentially. Vaccination absolutely matters. No, I can't say that enough because it doesn't seem to be hitting home.

Don't rely on anecdotes to make decisions. I'm glad so far everyone you know has had a mild case. I also hope your parents recover quickly and fully and wish they'd turn off the mind poison.

We can still mitigate with vaccines and masks. I can guarantee you that since vaccination I've had multiple exposures - all while wearing either a medical or cloth or N95 mask - and thank the good lord I haven't been infected since being vaccinated despite these multiple exposures. Dumb luck? Unlikely. More likely that both vaccination and masking helped protect me. Anecdotal, but repeated many times over and studies show the same protection for healthcare workers in general who follow similar practices. That's important because we are among the most likely to be exposed.

It is also known that the vaccinated are less likely to be infected (or colonized, for that matter - there is a difference), are less likely to infect others, recover more quickly and become less able to infect others more quickly, and have lower rates of hospitalization and death.

Vaccination absolutely matters.
