Crazy game, but still the worst D

I've had more time to digest it all and soberly mind you 😂 and it's still the same to me.
In less than one year Sabans defense has given up the 3 highest total points to Clemson, LSU and now Auburn and Auburn's offense is horrible 4 real.
Progressively getting worse.

Maybe not totally the reason Bama lost as it's a TEAM effort meaning both sides of the ball but Bama has and always will win championships with a sound defense and if this alarming trend continues don't expect to see Bama play for anymore championships.

Giving up 34 points to Auburn's dog excrement 2019 offense ain't the new normal. Giving up 44 to 2018 Clemson or 46 to 2019 LSU might damn well be the new normal but what happened yesterday was rank and file incompetence.

Really weird game.
Freaking Carlson had missed like 6 in a row from beyond 40 and nails 4???
🤷

Having Auburn in 3rd and 17 and the kid rips off 30+ yards?

That's NOT Bama style defense.

That was pretty disgusting.
So many things led to the loss.
Final was by 3 points.

That free 3 to end the 1st half...

Things that stick out the most to me.
1. Yeah the guys on D were young but lack of speed is a big issue. Can't cover, can't recover, can't make plays on the outside. They'll be back next year with no speed. You can coach away a lot of mistakes.
Don't confuse speed with "playing fast."

Truth is linebacker play wasn't that great at times last year either.
The occasional Mack theatrics but other than that very pedestrian at best.

Big games cause some players to rise to the occasion. Or rather, some players are able to rise to the occasion for big games. I tip my hat to Carlson because he did it. I’ve made a lot of gripes about how Auburn did nothing spectacular but Carlson is the exception to that.

He had missed his last 6 in a row from 40+ yards. He hit all 4 FGs yesterday, and all from 40+ yards. Hard to believe.

Honestly Saban's excellence and dominance had somewhat made Alabama boring till Tua arrived. Things were stale. It was like watching a Boa Constrictor just slowly squeeze the life out of its prey. Never in doubt and just boring and painful to watch.

When it's never really in doubt where's the fun or competitive spirit?
The fun is in crushing an opponent and grinding them into the ground until they lose the desire to play the game.

Can anyone say they were not thoroughly entertained in both the LSU & Auburn games?
I was not.

Im not sure Lee is even physically built to play LB in this defense against the offenses we now face every week. I wonder if it wouldn’t be better for him to put on a few pounds and convert to a DE.

Yep - DE or Jack.

we struggled with it some the year before too iirc due to injuries in the opener vs fsu and other injuries through the year.

People talk about recruiting misses w/r/t competition in our region and nationally for recruits but we signed two 5-star edge guys in the last two seasons and both were gone before the season started (Anoma and Alfano). They shrunk under competition or expectations. Could've used that kind of athlete on the field in November but enabling bad behavior is a worse poison than bad scheme.

We've just kinda had a bunch of bad luck in recruiting. Seems like we've had a higher-than-normal group of guys who are injury prone. Can't predict that stuff. We've also had a lot more of quick defections because bad personality fit to the program. Gotta wonder what affect coaching turnover had on that too. Kids who don't like their new assistant. Kids who got here sold one thing by their primary recruiter then discovering another reality when they actually got to campus. When we're changing guys all the time, the marketing material is bound to get a bit jumbled.

I expected Auburn's offense to score 3 touchdowns and maybe a FG. But the rest was just freakish. 4 long FGs and 2 pick sixes? I hope we never see that again. Totally freaky. It reminded me of the "punt bama punt" from years ago. I don't know, maybe there is a Jerkin-Hair jinx.
