We got back from a week long competition at Virginia International Raceway last night around midnight with our best finish ever at a Formula SAE event. We finished 8th out of 43 and also defeated Auburn for the first time. I won't talk trash about them because they're actually a decent group of guys. Their car wasn't competition ready, so they weren't able to compete in all of the events.

Here's a breakdown of the competition:
Cost: 13th
Design: Tied for 5th
Sales Presentation: 6th
Acceleration: 7th
Skidpad: 11th
Autocross: 9th
Endurance: 7th
Fuel Economy: 4th

OVERALL: 8th

Here's a few pictures from the competition as well as our new piece of hardware for display.

I posted this in Football just to get the most attention to this great accomplishment.

Most excellent.

I see by the background of the 2nd picture that Coach Saban was there to assist you guys in the pursuit of your own process.

Congratulations.
In the foreground of the same picture is fulmer appropriately adjusting an orange cone -or maybe it is the old game of which cone is hiding the doughnut.

Is the Formula SAE competition a collaboration of different schools within UA or is it just Engineering?

It's a part of the Society of Automotive Engineers, but it's open to all students at UA. Just this year we added a business major to the team and we're always looking to add more. It just happens that majority of the team is composed of mechanical engineers.

Nice ride.
Can you guys sell sponsorships? I noticed a company's name.

Absolutely! Our project is funded 90% by private donations and sponsorships. It costs us over $20,000 each year to construct our vehicle...not to mention extra costs, such as travel. We're traveling to Fontana, CA in June to compete again in Formula SAE West and that will end up costing us nearly $10,000 alone. Every name/company logo you see was atleast a $500 donation...whether it be services, parts, or money.

Our sponsors this year were:

Honda Manufacturing of Alabama
Bell Helicopter
Audi Performance and Racing (APR)
Alabama Bolt and Supply
STAM Tube Bending Services
Alabama Power
CraneWorks
TVR Automotive
Star Aviation
Industrial Specialty Company Inc. (ISCI)
Aureus International
Patriot Solutions
UA Center for Advanced Vehicle Technologies
and obviously the UA College of Engineering

...as well as a stack of private donors who's names are also on the car.

If you or someone you know would be interested in a sponsorship, shoot me a PM and I'll gladly send you a sponsorship packet.

Here is this teams website: http://www.sae.eng.ua.edu/

I work for a metal supply company that they have purchased Aluminum from, and had this website tucked away in my email. They do sell t-shirts if you were wondering about helping them out with money.

RTR

Actually, that's the Society of Automotive Engineers website. Our site is linked on that site.

The link to our site is actually:
