I wish they would send me a check for all I paid when I was scraping by. too late now. all is paid off.
Unfortunately, you did the smart thing and didn't take on debt to pursue a career that pays too little to finance that debt. Your punishment for being smart is to pay the bills for all those who had the opposite strategy - racking up debt while pursuing a degree that leads to a career with sub-standard income. Which is strange considering how awesome the economy is and everyone has good jobs now.

The curious thing is that no one has had to pay a dime on their student loans for more than three years. I've that the typical student loan payment is around $250 per month, so these people did the responsible thing and continued to set aside that amount of money the last three plus years, right? And now they have around $10k set aside to apply to their loans, right? Which means they don't really need $10k from current (or future generation) taxpayers, right? Irresponsible people wouldn't make a bad decision like squander this money, right?

The good thing is that Biden has realized how stupid government is at policy-making. And you will never have to pay someone else's student loans because the government is now out of the student loan business. College tuition is coming down and prospective students will now be much wiser in their educational and career choices. Biden did the smart thing an canceled bad policy. He wouldn't do the typical Washington thing of "fixing" bad policy with more bad policy.... Oh, wait... Biden did the typical Washington play. I guess he's not so special - just as much of a clown as everyone else in DC. Well, you'll get to pay the bills of more irresponsible people a few years down the road when we have this "crisis" again.

And we were so close to having smart government.

It's about time that the government follows the law regarding student loans. That's really all this is.
I graduated with a decent amount of debt, but I was moderately fortunate to get a good enough job to pay the loans off quickly. My life could have been very different/more difficult if I didn't get that one job that paid well.

But, the whole problem with student loans is taking loans out to get a degree is that your are truly gambling that your future job, economy, business solvency, health, income, life events, etc. combined will allow you to pay your loans off in a reasonable time frame. There are millions of capable/responsible people that have found life/world events that prevent them from paying off loans. Couple that with a loan you cannot forgive/declare bankruptcy without dying or some life wrecking event at percentage rates that can be repulsively high.

We was a nation should be flat out ashamed that we have let financial profiteers and small government people push our youngest into gambling their future earnings with the hope they can eventually come out on top. Sure, borrowing to get a degree and then a job works can work for many, but obviously millions of kids end up in a cycle of debt they cannot or will not be able to get out of. Why have our older generations who received an relatively cheap education continued to demand their life to be subsidized by loans from our children?

HRC's letter last night should be read.

The difference in how we treat the rich and businesses vs less affluent individuals is not by accident.

In 1980, Thurmond became chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and eventually supported renewal of the Voting Rights Act.

____________

I have no idea if Biden had a hand in convincing him or not, but the White House said this was the time period Biden was referencing.

Biden was elected to the US Senate in 1972.

I would certainly hope that's what he was referring to, but you have to admit, it's hard to be sure with this guy. As to whether or not Biden had anything to do with Thurmond's about-face on the issue, I have my doubts. His record in the Senate of opposing busing, opposing school integration and strong friendships with racist southern senators are difficult to ignore.

There's no doubt that Strom voted for renewal in 1980. That's a verifiable fact.

Whether then Sen. Joe Biden convinced him is up for debate.

But the far right media's claim of a gotcha moment supposedly supporting their unsupported claims of dementia in Biden are beyond ridiculous.

You know in the midst of his bouts with dementia he managed to strong arm negotiation with big-pharma and Medicare on 10 vital drugs for senior and poor Americans. Imagine what Biden could do if he were lucid and 10 years younger...

If you think Biden was the one that did that I’ve got a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn. His staff did it and good job on that one.
