Blog: Debating cross-divisional rivalries

I think the cross-divisional games will be dead in three years.

Bama-UT and Georgia-Auburn are really the only ones anyone cares about and they have become so one sided in the last few years that there won't be enough to save them when everyone else wants the change.

I'm not so sure "everyone else" wants the change. I believe Ole Miss-Vandy, Kentucky-Mississippi State and soon to be starting Arkansas-Missouri, are all content with the one permanent rival.

LSU fans have been whining about having to play UF every year since 1992. It is very rare that you see a UF fan complain about having to play LSU. What irritates me is the fact that LSU scheduled UF 36 of the 39 years prior to expansion in 1992. From 1953-1991, when schools made out their own schedules, LSU, with no SEC gun to their head, scheduled UF every year except 1968-70. I wonder why the heck the SEC thought they might be rivals?

This should end the discussion, IMO. UF is likely to be a consistently better opponent than UT going forward, but things can and often do change. I'll give credit to the Barn - they don't let their coach go out and whine about play Jawjuh.

As much as I love Bama-ut, I agree with the notion that there are only a couple of decent permanent rivalries anyway. Blow it all up, go to a 9 game, and see what the future holds.

You're not doing away with 'tradition'. Will people still tailgate? wear their gear? will the bands still play? Cheerleaders still lead cheers? College girls and boys dress up and show up late? Will Bama-ut still play, just not every year?

Of course....all these things will still happen.

I don't think you have to look further than Neb-Ok game to see some of these changes are not good for college football.

I don't like being on the other side of CNS but I really think the nation is trying to make SEC teams do something to bring down their dominance.

Why do we need to change?

I think last season was one of the most exciting ever.

I am in favor of having no divisions in the SEC, top two ranked teams play for the SECC. Is this likely to happen? No. I am also in favor of dropping permanent cross divison rivals and rotating either 2 or 3 games ( 8 or 9 conference games) against cross division rivals. Is this likely to happen? Yes.

While a lot of us on here are old school (I still prefer a 10 team conference); the fact is that change is on the way and that change is driven by who is going to get the most money. If the SEC wants to get the biggest bucks then something is going to have to change.
