Defensive Adjustments Question

Something to make you all think differently about last week's game. Compare the Ga. Southern game from 2011 with last week's and you will see that the greatest defense of Coach Saban's tenure got lit up. If that game would have had a pick 6 and two #2's on the field at the same time which caused a 14 point swing, that game would have probably had the same outcome. We won 45-21 that night. This screenshot does not appear to be the entire game because the time of possession doesn't match up but it gives you an idea of the game.

How about when the Citadel ran for almost 300 on us in 2018...

Talking to some about this. Teams with potential high draft picks on the D line do not like playing teams that cut block, as option teams are apt to do. Defenders spend time trying to throw the blocker down in front of you which leads to you being more upright. This leads to more "catching" as the Film Guy talks about or more "playing on your heels" as CKW talks about.

I remember in that Citadel game that we played a bunch of second stringers to begin the second half and all of the sudden we were much more successful...

I think we need a dog on defense...there was always one or two Alpha's on our great defenses...either at LB, NT or Safety etc...not sure we really have that on this defense or other recent versions of our D...its a trait that seems to be disappearing across the board. Leaders are invaluable.

I'm sorry if I misunderstand, but isn't the job of a defensive coordinator - never mind one making 7 figures a year - to know how to freaking adjust to things he wasn't expecting?
That was from his first remarks. At that time I had not noticed any adjustments in the 2nd half. But he later made it clear. They did make adjustments at the half. And they worked until 3rd down. Then Lea, on 3rd down, put in more plays not seen before. And seeing how they kept making the 3rd down plays, it made more sense.

If you say so. Alabama got beat on 3rd down all game long because they could not affect the QB. No adjustment addressed that, which is why Alabama lost.

If I say so? I was going on what Wommack said. Apparently, they were able to stop them in the 2nd half on 1st and 2nd down. Not 3rd.

... BTW, I think if we could forget the team we played last Saturday is called "Vandy" many of us could start moving on because we associate "Vandy" with incompetence in football.
I agree ... I think this has been shown to be the case, in multiple comments, on multiple threads.

... But that's not your daddy's "Vandy" football team.
I have seen this statement several times this week.

The possibility also exists that "this is not your daddy's "BAMA" football team, either. :)

... They'll win more SEC games this year.
I agree, Vandy has made a statement, and they probably are not through talking. :)

You said that they did make adjustments and that they worked. Sure, they slowed them down on 1st and 2nd down, but adjustments don't work unless they stop drives and turn possessions into punts
I can see both of ya'll perspectives. So if they adjusted on all three downs but we struggled on 4th? It went from adjustments to lack of mentality and toughness.

That's what Wommack said. He said they made adjustments at the half to what Vandy was doing in the first half. And that the adjustments did work on 1st and 2nd downs. But on 3rd downs they didn't work because Lea used plays Bama had not seen. And they did so on 3rd down plays. That's what I understood him to say. If so, then that explains part of the issue not stopping them on 3rd downs. He wasn't making excuses, as much as explaining the work the defense has to do to get better. This from Wommack is on YouTube.

The Saban era is history and should be treated that way. He has been fully respected, admired and compensated, but we need to move forward. Nick will always be remembered by Alabama football fans for accomplishing something that will probably never be repeated in college football. He now joins the other legendary Alabama coaches, Wallace Wade, Frank Thomas and Paul Bryant. Pruitt coordinated the best recent defenses. Is he available?

"Chik-Fil-a" has a show cause until 2029 I believe. I think his character is questionable.

Weird semantic hill for you to die on, tbh
He's right.

Vandy was basically wasting their 1st down on purpose to get our Defense to show their hand and then using 2nd and 3rd down to convert.

It's embarrassing.

If a team is consistently converting 3rd downs to 1st downs like Vandy was doing then ultimately we did not make successful adjustments to stop them.

It's not semantics it's just reality.

They out schemed us for 60 mins and just dunked on our defense the entire game.

this is exactly what has me a little concerned on Wommack. He thinks what he was doing on first down worked, while Vandy was essentially giving up first down to see what he was running. They totally baited him into showing his hand so they knew exactly what to do next, and he thinks what he was doing was 'working'.

Yup and the whole “they were giving us a lot of plays and looks that weren’t on tape” line…..liiike yeah that’s every game. What sec team is only running plays you have tape of?? That’s literally what will be happening for the rest of the year so might wanna figure that out sparky

That's the same conclusion I've made, too. So we agree. Yet we get our word choice and logic challenged for some reason

Based on what I heard from CKD at lunch today, we would lose to Vandy again if we played them again.

Im questioning his approach in holding his coaches and players accountable. I dont think he has clearly defined or reinforced the standard for what he is looking for from the staff and players. And he definitely believes his offense can overcome deficiencies in defense.

Sometimes your guys just need a good ole butt chewing...

What did he say to make you believe that?
