Defensive Adjustments Question

My wife and I were discussing this last night. If Saban were brought in and leveraged to help Wommack take what he has put on the field and transform it into something capable of stopping teams like Texas and Georgia, could he actually do it? Is it possible at this point in the season, or will it require an entire offseason to fix?

I believe that the ship has sailed, but my wife thinks that it might be possible if changes were implemented during a bye week.

So, looking for thoughts. Is Alabama even considering using Saban as a resource here? If so, is it too late? What changes could be made within Wommacks system that might make a difference this season?

I guess we don't know if the Defense has fully been implemented. If CNS could fix the Defense, why didn't he do it when Golding was DC?

The defense was horrible Saturday no doubt about it. It’s kinda funny how the thought went from we won’t be able to hold on to our DC for long to we have to get rid of our DC. I have a few things I’ve questioned about the game.
To play an option team like vandy you have to be disciplined. Is the “swarm” defense at a disadvantage here. We want people swarming to the ball but if you blow your assignment the ball will go to where you was supposed to be.
Is this just the disadvantage of a 1 gap vs 2 gap or is it mostly an alignment thing like Gilbert mentions. The OLB lined up over the guard in a 3-3 stack.

Saban said he was worried about the secondary at the beginning of the season so I’d imagine people in around the program knew there were gonna be some growing pains regardless. I’d also add our offense does our defense no favors. I do not like this style of defense and was worried when he hired Womack. That being said we are young and thin so this might just be an all year thing

This new defense allows the DL to make more plays themselves instead of just eating up blocks for the LB's. That's a problem when you're DL aren't really making plays.

If they aren't making plays, then you've either got 2 LB's or 3 on certain plays. 4-2-5 with DL not getting off blocks and having only 2 LB's to clean it up isn't going to work consistently against the run.

They threw a parade for Jesus one week then crucified Him the next....and Wommack ain't Jesus. Things can change quick with these people creatures. He better learn to get off the field on 3rd down. LOL!

At the end of the day, our guys in the front 6 need to make more plays and beat their blocks. The defensive coordinator can make all the right calls, but if our guys don't cover receivers, or beat a few blocks, then it doesn't matter.

If I'm CKD, I'll be soliciting CNS's analysis, evaluation and recommendation ASAP. I'm hoping he has already. Based on our last 6 quarters of football it can't happen quick enough.
IIRC, CNS had trouble stopping teams that ran a similar offense - hence the famous "$&!+ through a tin horn" comment.

This is CKD's team and this is CKW's defense. They need to own it.

I don't think CNS would have enough free time to even get involved to the degree he would need to do this.

Even if he could it would be such a large undertaking and bye week or not it would also imo be too much for the young players to learn and switch to right in the middle of the season.

But back to my 1st point I don't think many realize that CNS doesn't just show up on ESPN Gameday and freestyle his opinions.

Those guys do prep work for the segments and work on their talking points and probably do some light walkthroughs/rehearsals before Saturday am.

I just don't think it would be possible for CNS to do both his Gameday responsibilities and help an SEC team revamp their Defense mid-season.

Napoleon said it is better to have one bad captain than two good ones. He meant having two different plans, even if they are both good, will inevitably work at cross purposes.

Very different schemes and I do not know how Saban can coach up in a different scheme.
Your wife is an optimist. She thinks Coach Saban can do anything.

Hopefully Wommack realizes he isn't in the Sun Belt anymore.

I think it would also show a major lack of confidence in your DC to ask for help from CNS at this point. I'm not sure how the team would react to that.

I guess the question should be: Do we face another option team on our schedule this year?

I think this a problem for both lines. OL is too big and heavy for the pulling DeBoer likes to do. DL is composed of massive space eaters who aren't mobile, and frankly aren't even doing a great job at holding the line, let alone getting off blocks and being disruptive. And our secondary is a patchwork of freshman, Devonta in his first year playing, several marginal transfers, and Domani and Malachi who are our only players that are NFL ready.

I mean the DL aren't bad players at all, they are just made for Saban's system.

Hopefully, the coaches can retool and look at what they've done and be more efficient. I just don't see us being a dominant unit this year.

As for talking with Coach Saban for ideas... Heck to the yeah, why wouldn't you access that bank of knowledge if it would help? I mean... Saban and his ideas are quite different than Wommack's system, but he might have some pointers.

Wommack earns 1.55 MILLION per year to be the DC at Alabama. If he needs to go out and solicit advise from CNS, he needs to be terminated immediately.
If Wommack can't make adjustments, then he should be considered a liability. But immediate firing at this point in the season is the wrong angle to take.

If the defensive personnel aren't capable of adjusting, then that's on CKD. This is still his first year in the SEC and we did lose a lot of talent to the NFL and portal. IIRC Malachi got beat over the top for a TD. Was that on him or someone else who got caught out of position?

If you have CNS available and DON"T solicit his advice you're not using the resources available, no matter how much you're paid. If the tools are in the box, then USE THE RIGHT TOOL!

If I'm an offensive coordinator preparing for Alabama, based on what I saw Saturday, I'm absolutely adding some option-type plays/looks to my game plan. Vandy steamrolled Alabama with inferior athletes, it's scary to contemplate what 5-stars would have done.
