UGA will not retain DC Willie Martinez

Per Joe Schad/ESPN.

Smart move for the Bulldogs. Richt needed to do SOMETHING after this year.

Looks like ESPN reporter was wrong or spoke too soon

Breaking news! Nobody has been fired yet at Georgia! | Jeff Schultz

Schad sent out a Tweet at 12:20 p.m. that read: “Georgia will not retain DC Willie Martinez.”
Then at 1:11 p.m., he backpedaled and sent out another Tweet, saying: “I am hearing that Georgia is not making any announcements regarding Willie Martinez at this time. So keep in mind, no official announcement.”

Per UGA release...

Contracts of three Georgia assistant football coaches will not be renewed following the 2009 season according to an announcement Wednesday by UGA head football coach Mark Richt.

Defensive coordinator and secondary coach Willie Martinez, defensive co-coordinator and linebacker coach John Jancek, and defensive ends coach Jon Fabris will not return in 2010 according to Richt; however, he indicated that all three have been asked to coach through the bowl game.
OK, so who does Richt go after? Other than a QB, of course. :)

If the talk about Strong to UL comes to pass, then both UGA and FL will be looking for new DCs.

I hope Smart really really likes his job at Bama.

So this buys Richt another year or two, but honestly I think they have more fundamental problems than the defense, a lack of overall discipline being one of them. Haven't they been one of the most penalized teams for years now? Also, constantly having to resort to gimmicks to motivate your team raises questions about the abilities of the guy at the top to me.

Well he was at UGA in 05 and Richt had the bright idea of making him Running backs coach. I don't think he will leave.

Agreed. He already left Richt once, I don't think he'll go back. Especially considering where the 2 programs are talent wise on that side of the ball. Much better athletes at Alabama.

Also, we have one of the highest paid staffs in the league. He might have to take a pay cut if he leaves for UGA.

Beyond past time for Richt to pull the trigger on this move. He'll need to field a better team next year though or he could be the one on his way out.
