In watching the game, I want opinions on if our defense has that much issues or is it because of the improvising by A & M? I feel our defense is not as bad as what I saw but a result of an offense and player that we may never see again this year. So much of the passing and running was off of plays that were not by design. Some of the pass plays could have easily been picked off and was pure luck that they were not. If this has already been covered, sorry. RTR!!!

It was one insane QB and one talented WR beating us up.
Remember - if Yeldon doesn't fumble, we win by 21. It was not really as bad as the final score. You know how sometimes you see games with a final score that looks close but it really wasn't? (Super Bowl XXVI was a great example). This was the opposite.

i just dont think you can call it luck. They made plays on offense. Our corners had a tough day no doubt especially with Belue out. As much as CJ has come along at a new position he's still extremely raw as a corner in our defense. We need to get Belue healthy and Smith caught up down the stretch.
For my sanity I'm just chalking it up to a freakish, once in a lifetime style quarterback that college football probably won't see again for a long, long time. The ultimate goal is to win and we did that better than them.
ITs mostly busted coverage. Chalk it up to mental issues. Most of the plays we saw, Johnny made it happen... under the normal circumstances, it wouldn't look bad on us... but It's Johnny...
I hated to use the word luck but several of the passes were off his back leg and thrown so high up in the air, it was asking to be picked off. We will not see another scrambling quarterback like that other than Mariota. JMHO.
I think the D is still going to be solid this year. Perhaps not as effective as the past few years but still solid. One thing I have noticed about this unit so far is they are not laying the wood yet. I remember the D 2 years ago and the 2009/10 unit would injure nearly every quarterback to include the awesome Colt McCoy. This D only got one decent hit on JFF (the horse collar). I think laying the wood plays a big part on how good the defense is because it throws the opposing QB off their rhythm. I have yet to see the big pops like previous years (only 2 games, so I reserve the right to change my mind). Another thing is we have not used to many exotic blitzes this year. I use to love watching Javier sneak in off the corner and get to the QB in milliseconds. I have zero doubts the secondary has digressed a bit from the past (mostly because of experience). It is hard to replace Dre, Barron, Lester, and Dee over a two year period. Having said all this, I think this unit will be pretty solid by years end. And yes, TAMU is the type of O that makes great defenses look bad.
I don't care how talented you are, when an athletic 6'5" WR (who is at 3-6" taller than you are) goes up for the ball with perfect timing, you're grasping at air. Technique cannot overcome basic physics.

And no offense to any of our DBs, but cherry picking future NFL HoFers in comparison is a bit of a stretch...
Revis has actually done quite well against Megtron in the past. I don't think Evans is in the same league with Megatron. I agree with you though, just saying that talent (albeit HOF talent) can overcome.
I thought the same thing. Manziel got tremendous credit by announcers and afterwards by various ESPN talking heads, but what about the talented receiver? Johnny could have wildly thrown the ball all day (which he did), but someone had to catch the balls from him. He is no doubt talented, but is not the only person on the team.
Evans made that game close, imo - any other receiver on the Ags team and they lose by 21+...
Evans was in BEAST MODE yesterday. If he does that all year, he'll be set for life.
Mariota scares me to death too. That being said, I hope we can play the ducks in the BCSCG.
I'm amazed a Manziel's accuracy. The guy can throw the ball on the run into a Coke bottle. Evans was better than any db we put on him. It was a deadly combination. JM also read our defense very well. He knew where to go with the ball and he delivered.
Even when we were ahead by 21, the game seemed close to me. Yes, Yeldon fumbled, but JM threw an interception when aTm should have scored. Those guys are a threat to score on every play. I believe Bama has the better team and deserved the win, but IMO, the game was very close.

I would not want to see them again. I don't understand how they pimp slap us during the first 5 minutes. I wonder if we will finally adjust next year...?
I'll piggyback and say that probably half of his catches we had at least decent coverage and he just outjumped or outgrabbed it. Our secondary isn't "in trouble" or anything like that, it just ran into a couple dominant players the likes of which it probably won't see again this year...

Inexperience combined with once in a lifetime QB and a monster at WR makes for a bad day. Our DBs are not that bad. Plus when we got up by 21 we relaxed a bit, which I hate. I'm just glad it's over. We will need Belue and G. Smith down the stretch.

When Manziel passed from the pocket, without scrambling, your DBs did a pretty good job in coverage. Yes, on the first two drives they got some big plays, but the DBs were in position and simply could not overcome perfectly placed passes and Evans' incredible size advantage.
The only time that your DBs got in trouble before the 4th quarter was when plays broke down and Manziel extended the plays with his feet. Your soft approach at the LOS to avoid letting Manziel run the ball put your DBs in a position in which even NFL HOF DBs would have struggled. IMO, it was your defensive game plan that allowed all of those crazy passes. You picked your poison, believing that Manziel's legs were the bigger threat. Turns out that his arm, combined with a very good receiving corps, were an even bigger threat.
I would bet that if Alabama had to play that game again, your defensive approach would be very different. You should have placed more trust in your d-line and LBs.

Probably not realistic, given how how early it is, but I think Jai Miller is our only DB with the size/speed/strength to handle Evans.
I know he is sort of an enigma right now, but I started thinking about him alot yesterday.
