Derrick Henry Passed James, Faulk, Allen, & Brown last night

King Henry man, boy could we use him on the roster about now. Punishing opposing defenses game after game. Yea, DH may hang it up soon. The average lifespan for a running back in the league is what, 4-5 years? But you never know. If dude is still feeling it he might just be around a little longer collecting that pro cash. Probably has one heck of a TV career after retirement also.

I'm a bit confused. ESPN has Henry at 12,230 yards for his career, which is 15th place all time. That puts him 82 yards behind Jim Brown in 11th place. He could pass Marcus Allen, Edgerrin James, Marshall Faulk, and Jim Brown next weekend. Are you from the future?

I don't think they added last nights games into the career totals yet. But, now I'm getting conflicting answers. Sorry -- I may have posted one week too soon. Let me dig further

When I look at at the top of the all time rushing list, particularly Smith and Payton, I think it is important to look at how today’s NFL game has moved away from the RB/Run game as the central component of the offense the past many years. So much so that today, unless a RB is a virtual “can’t miss”, RB’s often get bypassed for QB’s and WR’s in the early rounds of the NFL draft

Not trying to takeaway from Smith, Payton, Gore, Sanders and others. I just think it is more difficult in today’s game for RB’s to post big rushing numbers.

Yeah, DH has averaged 265 carries per year.

Emmitt averaged 293 carries per years, Sanders averaged 300 carries per year.

Sizeable difference in opportunity.

Worth pointing out - average yards per carry: Henry ranks 3rd all time at 4.9 ypc, only trailing Jim Brown (5.2 ypc) and Sanders (5.0 ypc). If he had the same number of touches as Emmitt averaged over his career, Henry would currently be ranked just behind Curtis Martin (6th) all time.

Further, if DH had the same number of carries Emmitt was given, in the same time span DH would likely have amassed 21,604 yards - 3,300 more than Emmitt.

He had over 1,100 NEGATIVE rushing yards because the Lions OL was so bad for much of his career.

He literally ran circles around defenders at times having to run 20-30+ yards laterally before finding a positive gain.

I’ve only seen old highlights of Jim Brown but he looked incredible in everything.

Henry is in ELITE ELITE company among NFL RB’s.

That goodness I read that wrong. Roll Tide and congrats Derek!!!!

My first thought was who is James Faulk Allen-Brown... Nevah heard of him. Then brain clicked!

He's only about 2/3rds of the way to Emmitt's record - that would take a good 5-6 more productive seasons to achieve. I just can't see that happening.

His size is certainly beneficial. He delivers more punishment than he receives. And how many tackles over the course of his career, we not delivered with max force because the tackler was making a “business decision”?

I’ve also noticed he has become adept and going down gracefully and he knows how and when to stop fighting for yardage.

I hope he can hang in long enough to break Emmitt’s record, but regardless, you are right at RB is a hard career.

Gotta make all the money you may make for a lifetime, as an NFL player, within 10 years. Time one reaches 30-32 years of age, all those collisions are taking their toll. I hope Derrick has been great with his money and is ready to stand around being intimidating in his older years one day!

To me, Sanders was not the kind of RB to wear a defense down. It was more like lightning strikes with him. Emmitt, in combo with that all world OL the Cowboys had, would wear a defense down.

Henry can do both.

Barry Sanders was the greatest RB in history in my opinion. I remember watching him play, and it seemed like he was always dodging defenders the moment he was handed the ball. I've never seen anyone who could move the way he did. He made really good defenders look silly.
