Did anyone else hear Beano Cook on Colin Cowherd's show?

They have a weekly banter that's always entertaining. Today, Beano suggested that next year BAMA and penn state would face off in the BCSCG. Since I missed the first part, I couldn't tell if they meant the BCSCG game played in 2009 for the 2008 season, or if he meant the BCSCG played in 2010 for the 2009 season. Either way, it's nice to be thought of highly again.

I think we'll be worse off next year. We likely won't have big Andre, Antoine, RJ, and will be breaking in a new QB in the SEC...not a good equation for success---however, with this coaching staff anything's possible!

I have thought the exact same thing. There will likely be a slight drop off in performance next year due to some key positions. 2010 will prob be Bama's year if we don't have a magical year this year.

I agree that we can't be a legit title contender until at least 2010 or 11. Mrs. Dooley (Coach Saban's nextdoor vacation home neighbor) said that Nick told her that we were still 3 or 4 years away. Next year will be a setback, no doubt.

We can make some noise this year, and if the luck of injuries, etc. stays on our side, a run at at championship (SEC, at least) is not out of the question. However, there are still a lot of games left, and we were all eyeing the SEC title at this time last year, too.

I, too, think we might regress slightly for all of the aforementioned reasons, but I wouldn't expect too much. We'll rely heavily on young guys (again) in entirely too many positions to feel fully comfortable, but even so it will likely be the most talented team we've fielded in ages.

And honestly we have recruited well enough to ensure that most of the players we will lose can be replaced without any major drop-offs. The defense should be much better with nine starters returning, and with guys like Mark Barron and Marcel Dareus developing, we should be able to replace Bobby Greenwood and Rashad Johnson with no major trouble. Moreover, the same largely goes for the offensive side of the ball with John Parker Wilson. He's a serviceable quarterback, but he isn't elite by any stretch of the imagination, and decent play should replace him with no major drop-offs. And the same largely goes for the tight ends, too. We will lose Walker and McCall, but Peek is probably the best tight end we have now anyway, and Underwood has developed nicely as well.

The only major concern is the offensive line. If Andre leaves -- which I think most expect he will -- we do not have anyone who can legitimately replace him, and the drop-off behind Caldwell at center looks to be a pretty big one. Moreover, Marlon Davis has turned into a pretty stout right guard, and his loss will hurt, and you have to figure Mike Johnson won't be as effective by virtue of not being sandwiched in the middle of two great players. All in all, it's going to be a very young line with very little depth, and that's a major concern. Unless Love, Boswell, and Jones can really step it up as starters and play at a high level in 2009, it does look to be a bit of a long year for the offensive line.

However, with all of that said, it should be mentioned that the schedule does get a bit easier on us in 2009. We won't have to go on the road to Arkansas, LSU, Tennessee, and Georgia, and the road game against Georgia in Athens will be replaced by, thanks to the rotational conference schedule, a home game in Tuscaloosa against South Carolina. On the bright side of things, a slightly easier schedule should help us out some.

You just described the barn in 2008 and they were ranked in the top 10 preseason. So, you never know.......

I disagree. I just don't get why people think we will take a step backward next year. I think we most likely will be MUCH STRONGER next year. Here is why:

1) The defense comes back largely intact. Most all our D-Linemen return, and if Cody comes back, we should be stronger up front on D, and have more depth because we have young guys who are redshirting this year. Also, all of our LBs return, plus, we will add a few guys like Nico Johnson. Not to mention that the young true freshmen this year will have some experience and be that much stronger next year. In my opinion, we could have the strongest front 7 on defense that we've had since the early to mid 90's, and that is saying something. Also, our defensive backfield will be very strong. We only lose Rashad Johnson. Most of our other guys are fairly young, or Juniors at the most. We'll likely add tremendous players in recruiting also that will make us that much better. A strong defense is the most important ingredient to winning championships, we all saw that in 92.

2) We only lose 9 scholarship Seniors. We have the fewest scholarship Seniors of any team in the country.

3) Our RB Corp will return intact, and not only that, we will possibly add Trent Richardson to the stable. Not to mention that Matchett and Preyear will be available after a likely redshirt this season.

4) WR position should be very strong. We don't lose much here. Our major contributors all return.

5) Losing Andre Smith and Caldwell up front will be a big loss, but I don't think the loss will be as substantial as in past years, simply because Coach Saban has recruited well, and even with the loss of those two great players, we are going to have better depth along the offensive line than we've had in years. We'll be fine here.

6) Replacing a Senior QB is always a challenge, but I think for the first time in a while we will actually have some quality depth here next season. McElroy is not exactly chopped liver, and Star Jackson should be ready to compete for the position as well. I look for us to possibly be better off at QB next year than we are this year. Star Jackson could add a special combination of throwing ability and athleticism that we haven't had in a very long time. McElroy knows this offense well, so we'll have capable players.

7) Overall depth. We will have the best depth situation we've had in probably 10-15 years. Alot of it will be young, but we will still be deeper and much more talented next year overall than this year. Remember, it will be year 3 under Nick Saban.

8) Special teams should be especially strong. Tiffin and Javier Arenas should both be back. Coverage teams should even be better next year because our overall depth and maturity will be better.

9) Our schedule is more favorable. We will have LSU and UT at home.

Wow, Bama323, that's certainly a "glass half-full" viewpoint! I'd love to see you be right ...

I don't think we'll have a drop off next season either and alot of that is because of recruiting and coaching. We're still a pretty young team now and we're doing alot better than what alot of people thought we would. I think from here on out as long as CNS stays around Bama will be in the mix. I believe we'll be just as good if not better next season.:BigA:

I would rather listen to fingers down a chalkboard than listen to Colin Coward.
Remember he's the one that attacked our fan base and Tidetalk, Saban's call in show. I still think I did some good by emailing everyone of his sponsors that day threatening to plaster every Bama fan forum with boycott suggestions to all his sponsors and reported his activities. Everyone of those sponsors emailed me back saying they would find out about it, and it did stop immediately from that day on. Not another word about it, like it never happened. MaybeI did, maybe I didn't......I think it worked to this day.

Listen to his show for 15 minutes and see how many times he says "I" an "me",
you'll be surprised by the number. He is a hack who is so bad that I actually appreciate someone like Jim Rome now. At least he has morals and common sense.

Only thing I need to know about next season is the fact that we will return 31 of the 33 guys on the defensive three-deep, not to mention impact freshmen for the 2009 class. Think about that. If the offense is just competent, this teams goes a long way next year.
