Bama fans need to unfollow Clay Travis and Sports By Brooks on Facebook and Twitter. They are desperate for hits to their websites and stuff like this will make them famous.
The Clay Travis, Jeffrey Lee, and SBB types seem to just recycle old stories. That's assuming there was a "story" to begin with. They present their crap like it's BREAKING NEWS. These guys light fires and then step aside and watch all the people run to it. Their web sites get a high number of hits and they love it! I am FINISHED with following these kind of "journalists." I won't click on links to their web sites nor follow their tweets. Even if it's supposed to be bad news for *U...I won't follow it. I will only pay attention to stories that come from reliable sources.

I agree, Clay Travis mentioned on twitter the other day "oh no is that Trent signing jerseys with tags on them??" what does price tags have to do with them? We see people sell stuff all the time with current players sigs on them they get from fan day or the like. As long as Trent is not getting anything or didnt profit from the signature or jersey sells then he is fine. I doubt he would agree to have pictures taken if he was actually getting something...

And Clay can bring up the fact he was pictured in different attire as I'm sure he's been to that store WAYYY more than just once. Crap I've been there more than once and dont even live there. I'd imagine most of the team spends ALOT of time at the mall. JMHO.

I've never been to that mall without seeing one of the players...

Just for everyone's information Clays got another story out calling it breaking news that UA sent the store a Cease and desist letter. Call me crazy but that was the news that Schade released 2 days ago and clay decided to mock him for it. The only difference is clay has a copy of the letter. He says it indicates that the guy was selling the merch, but of course has no proof nor does he make the accusation that the players knew anything about it.

In other words clay's breaking news is once again recycled news from another reporter and he decided to continue beating the issue to death.

He also released another one trying to pin the suit owner as a booster and saying the McCarrons jersey was displayed in Jan after the letter. Im not linking the site though.

For all the *U lurkers out there that believe someone selling something with a current player's autograph is a violation, please see following link. TONS of Michael Dyer garbage for sale right now. Surely none of these people are related to Dyer, or boosters of the program, right?

heard about that, but didnt find anything in the story that implicated UA not doing its job, just clay continueing his "oh yeah" story approach. Everytime someone tells him he's wrong he continues to push it. It looks like his new thing is pointing out how our graduated players were in the store buying suites and signing autographs. All the players he named or showed pictures of are graduated or gone (Gmac, Ingram, Jones) and again makes vague acusations that there is something wrong with graduated players signing merchandise.

He also points out an AJ jersey in the window of a pic from January, which may I'm not sure if its a real issue if it wasn't signed seeing as selling a customized unsigned jersey is not a violation of any kind. Of course he then promises that the story is "just beginning." Despite not saying anything new in four articles and calling it breaking news.

Either way most of this falls on the store owner and other than sending a cease and desist I'm not not sure what UA can do.

well the owner probably would constitute a booster, he is obviously a fan and since he owns a store in Ttown that is basically the only suit store in the city now, the players have to shop there and I'm sure, like all fans he likes to bother them and get autographs and talk to them.

As long as they aren't receiving benefits from the guy then theres not much more UA can do about it other than disassociate the guy if they think they need to. And UA says there was no violation.

He can continue to sell signed merch as long as the students are not in school and as far as he or anyone can tell from the pictures the AJ jersey isnt signed.

That is what I was thinking too. I dont think the NCAA would expect them to go over there and physically remove the items from the store. That would be an illegal situation in itself.

Anyone else notice that UA compliance has denied the reports of wrong doing (BC and this) within a few days, but AU's compliance department has not released a report to the media on any accusations? Jacobs and Chizik are the only ones that have made comments. Seems like Goldberg or some other reporter would write an article about the compliance department finding no wrong doing.

he's also making a big deal that the owner had sideline passes in 2009 and 2010.

He's also making a big deal that TR was signing a jersey with the tags still on it...as if to say he should have known it was for resale. So, you can't bring a brand new jersey to a signing???

What's with the talk about the Japanese steakhouse SportsbyBrooks is referring to?
There's a picture of Trent Richardson sitting w/ the store owner at a Japanese steakhouse.

I know this won't be a popular opinion, but there's smoke to this fire. Fact: there are multiple pics of TR signing merchandise at the store. Fact: there's a pic of TR at a restaurant w/ the same store owner.

Seems odd that TR would spend so much time with a known booster if he wasn't getting something in return...

Also, this looks like it'll be 3 summers in a row that a high profile UA football player has been busted getting impermissible benefits.

Long ramble, but here goes.

My fear is that given the current climate, some Auburn fans and others in the media will dig so much that eventually something will come up. The catch will be if our people have already found it.

I take comfort in that scenario slightly for two reasons:

One, our compliance department has been tight as can be after TextbookGate. Second, UA beat reporters have never shied away from reporting negative news. Even the BOL/247 reporters are much quicker to report negative news compared to no-counts like Hokanson and Marshall.

I don't trust this clothing store guy.

I tend to think that serious wrong doing would not have lasted long, and for several reasons:

1. IT'S A STORE AT THE FREAKING MALL. This is not some hole in the wall joint out in Coker or a small storefront on the Westside in Tuscaloosa. It's at the University Mall. There's no hiding out there.
2. The size of Tuscaloosa. Tuscaloosa is not a large city like Columbus, Ohio or Austin, Texas or even Columbia, South Carolina. While it's close to Birmingham, which is similar in proportion to the Athens/Atlanta relationship, both Alabama cities are smaller. On the other hand, Tuscaloosa is not a small, out of the way town like Starkville or Auburn. Point being, it's awful hard to hide in Tuscaloosa. That means wrong doing couldn't happen out in the open.
3. Again - it's a mall store!

Clay Travis doesn't really believe that there's anything to the Auburn story. He think it's mostly anti-Auburn venom coming from Alabama fans, and so if he can be the conduit for some anti-Bama shenanigans by some Booger eaters, he's more than happy to oblige.

Last word, and in a roundabout way, a defense of the idiots Clay Travis and SBB. They are not professional journalists. I get that. In this day and age, the bad news is that any idiot with a laptop and a WIFI hot spot can be a reporter. That's also the good news. There is a place in our society, and in the sports world, for citizen journalists. Whatever you think of our previous president, it was a group of citizen journalist and bloggers, including some well-heeled Minneapolis attorneys and a University of Tennessee law professor, who exposed a bunch of "real" journalists at CBS for using fake documents in a new story. Think also of Stephen Glass and Jason Blair. The problem with Brooks and Travis is not that they are not "professional" journalists. The problem is that both of them, Clay Travis especially, traffic in gossip, hoping to be right. Clay Travis is a spoiled man-child, halfway talented, and desperate for you to like him. I'm going to Nashville in about six weeks. I hope I see him at a bar, and I hope I've had enough courage to tell him what I think of him and his sorry website.

Addendum: Just saw the above note about the picture of Trent with the store owner. That doesn't sound good, either, but on its own, it doesn't prove anything. My gut, though, is that something is up with that. But you know what? We didn't pay 200,000 for a football player.

Trent hasn't been "busted" for anything as of yet. The incident two years ago was basically a misunderstanding and the guy was an auburn booster.

guessing it is now a violation for a player to run into a guy he's met before at a restaurant. there's not violation in a player talking or even hanging out with a booster, as long as he's not receiving any benefits from it. and there's yet to be any proof of that.

I am going to go out and say it...

I don't trust the owner of this store either. From what I've seen through his marketing and such, it's always come across as "I'm using Alabama in my commercials so that means you should shop at this store!" He gives me the impression of an owner that will do anything to get customers in a store, and in a college town... that means using the local college sports team. I'm not optimistic this guy would give one flying flip about rules of any kind.

I said the same above. Guy comes across as very shady. Right now all Clay Travis has is conjecture and a good looking wife. Let's hope it stays that way.
