Did you take shop class in junior and/or high school?

  • Hi Guest, we are working on updating the site servers and software. We're also 'forcing' everyone to read and agree to our site privacy policy and terms of service. There are no significant changes to either of these but the terms page does clarify a few things that are mostly in the legalese. You can just click the checkbox for both and continue using the site as usual! We'll update you more on the site upgrades VERY soon! THANK YOU AS ALWAYS for supporting the site and being an active participant!

Nah.

I could never process how it was that a guy missing three fingers could flunk somebody in “power saw safety.”

As with my dad, I became my kids' shop teacher. My older daughter could change the wheel bearings on her car before graduating from HS. When I acquired stepsons, I did the same for them. A couple of years ago, my stepson was laying tile in the restaurant where he's a manager. The owner asked how he knew how to do all these things. He answered "My stepdad"...

Just to be clear - I WANTED to take shop, which was called "Industrial Arts" at Sembach AFB, West Germany. (The teacher was a distant relative of then superstar QB Dan Fouts, he even looked like him).

But I showed up to school a month late due to military commitments. And by that time, Shop and Home Ec were full and they were not going to let me START French or German with the class already one month along (although my German teacher was so good, I probably could have caught up easily due to her method of instruction).

So they put me in Art.

And for the record, I hate Art to this day, no offense to the art lovers here.

But I loathe Art, largely because my teacher was a pompous, I'll leave it at that.

Pretty much the same on art here, although, looking back, the teacher was so weird, I think she was definitely on the spectrum. Her connection to the outside world was tenuous, at best. I did learn a little art appreciation. In my HS at the time, French, Latin (4 years) and Spanish (by the art teacher) were offered but no German...

We had an off site dedicated trade school when I was in HS and I wish I had taken one of those classes just to develop some type of skill with a trade.

Being ‘Booksmart’ hasn’t really done anything for me. I’ve always been good at teaching myself the theory of subjects but it’s the real world application that’s my weakness.

I did take Typing as an elective and that really served me well in my early jobs as I was putting myself through University.

But I think my generation (GenX/Xennial) was done a disservice by having the ‘Get a Degree’ or else mantra beat into our heads.

People who are in skilled labor/trades can make a dang fine living and have something they can rely on.

Oh and I took Home Economics too but I’ll admit that was because I knew it would be 20+ cute girls and just me…lol

LMAO. It sounds like you are talking about my sister. She still lives in Tuscaloosa and makes jewelry for a living. Never had a job I can recall and she's in her 70's now. Unbelievably talented working with metals but is almost a savant in every other aspect of her life. I've never taken an art class because I have absolutely zero talent art-wise. It's funny how that works.

My kids used to say any animal I drew turned out looking like a dog... :)
