The Breakdown: Dual-threat quarterbacks

In "The Breakdown," veteran talent scout Randy Rodgers is analyzing film of a select group of the nation's top prospects for Rivals.com. Rodgers has more than 35 years of experience in the college recruiting arena. He was the recruiting coordinator at the University of Illinois (1988-91) and the University of Texas (1992-97) and is one of the leading authorities on high school football talent analysis in the country. In this edition, Rodgers takes a look at dual-threat quarterbacks.

Star Jackson Analysis:

After watching his tapes, I wouldn't consider him a "dual-threat" QB, more of a pro-style guy with a whole lot of athletic ability. Has the best set-up mechanics of this bunch. A high release point, sees the field real well, shows good velocity on his throws. I really was impressed with his pocket poise. He isn't really utilized as a runner on his tapes, but is certainly athletic enough and fast enough to be effective in that capacity. I really liked his touch on deep balls, the velocity on slants and posts, and his ability to throw on the run. I thought he was the best "passer" in this group.

Definitely sounds like these guys are VERY impressed with Star. It's going to be great to have him in Crimson! RTR

this might be a little bit off topic but did anyone see the QB for the jets last night. Brad Smith from Missu. He was extremely entertaining to watch and had great talent. If you get a chance to see this guy.... DO! How would the guru's compare Star Jackson and Brad Smith.

Brad Smith is 6'2 210
Star Jackson is 6'3 185

Also Brad Smith is the only player in NCAA history to pass for 8,000 yards and rush for 4,000 in his career. Here is hoping that Star Jackson performs above those numbers while wearing Crimson.

After reading this analysis, does anyone still think we're "settling" for Star, or that he is a second tier guy? Absolute perfect fit for our O! ;) :) Anyway, we already know he's gonna be a "star"....... wherever he goes! :p :biggrin2:

On a side note, I decided to check out Robert Griffin's tape to see what an all-american track star looked like playing QB, and I was impressed. Better passer than that scout gave him credit for.

You're right, he's very impressive throwing the ball. Strong arm with good touch, especially on the deep ball.
