End of First Half Playcalling?

I know we're just shooting the bull, but I kind of hate it when everyone just throw up their hands and says "I trust Coach Saban" or "Glad I'm not in charge," as though that settles the matter.

I personally felt it was bs that we couldn't get it in from the one! Line up power I and shove it down their throats. I didn't want no stinking play action, no timmy jump pass, no bootleg, I wanted them to line up and take it to them! And I believe Saban did too. We shouldve punched it in from the half yard line. I mean we got 6'7' 330 Fluker on the right side, why not have him MAN up and BLOW his man off the line and walk in right behind him and Steen. I was extremely ....ed when we let the backups from arky stop us on the goal line! There is no reason we shouldn't punched it in. But in their defense I did see Fowler I believe miss an assignment on 3rd down there when highsmith come threw untouched. And where was Bonds, or why can't we implement a jumbo package with some of them hosses we got over there. Man up and shove down their throats!!!!!!

Please, Please - no jumbo package!

I really thought AJ got in on the sneak at the goal line. Our 2nd down play in my opinion isn't a very effective play if your fullback hasn't been in the game blocking repeatedly. 3rd down was a missed assignment and thwart can be corrected. As for play action, I would say its being set up pretty well as other teams watch our tapes.

For those of you that don't want play action at the goalline, CNS begs to differ with you on that call. Or at least he did in 2009.

After the failed chance to get a TD at the goalline, the OL played much better in the rest the game. I'm sure there were a few choice words with them.

They did block much better in the second half. I re-watched the first half and there's just no doubt that AJ was in. That is, unless he let the ball slip down to his navel. There's no requirement that the refs have to actually see the ball. If enough of the body gets in that the ball in the normal position would have crossed the line, that's enough for most officials...

Yep, not sure how anyone doing a review could have missed that. Wasn't close.

I agree that AJ was likely in on that 1st play at the goal line. We actually got very fortunate on the spot, as it looked like Richardson was actually down closer to the 2 on the previous play. But my issue with the playcalling is, that it seems to get so awkward in those situations for us. Why not just line up in the power I, and run Richardson off tackle? Instead we try the sneak and then get cute with the quick hand off to the fullback. And then on 3rd down when everyone in the world expects it we finally hand it to Richardson. It's kind of like the Tennessee game in 09, in the first half, we get down there and try 3 straight fades to Julio after Ingram has powered his way down the field. We get cute in those situations under McElwain, and we just seem awkward when we try cute stuff.

You won't find me complaining about the end result of the Saban method. Sometimes I think we could handle the details in a better fashion. And quite frankly, as Saban is always seeking perfection from his players, I don't find it offensive for us to seek perfection from the ones calling the plays. I'm not unrealistic, and I will never expect perfection, but I enjoy talking about it after the fact. Especially when we've just won 38-14 . We've got the best in the business running things, and for that I'm thankful. But we're just fans talking about it on a message board. Not for a second do I expect my suggestions to ever make it to Saban's desk, and even if they did, I would never expect him to do anything other than rip them up and throw them in the garbage.

I get where you're coming from on this, but personally I'll take a "finesse" TD over a "man-up" FG any day. With Trent's speed and ability to power through a DB, I cannot understand why we are not running to the corner on those goal line plays.

Nope. We were up 10 on a good team. No reason to give them a score. I'm sure Texas wishes they had employed more vanilla play calling at the end of the first half of the NCG. Saban plays the percentages. Percentages usually win in the end.
To counter that... We went three and out and punted with over a minute left. Gave them the ball back and time to move the ball.

You could look at it that way. You could also say we backed them up and put our strongest unit on the field. I think CNS trust his defense much more than his offense and I do too.

I absolutely could not believe that was not spotted on replay and time was not called to review the play. It was clear as day from 2 or 3 different angles that they showed. In fact, I think the ball even broke the BACK side of the white line into the crimson of the end zone...

What happened right before half last year in the Iron Bowl? An Auburn score and the start of a momentum switch.

You've got to understand that at that point in the game Arkansas had one sustained drive -one! Why would you use high risk/high reward offensive playcalling when it clearly isn't necessary? With a defense as good as this year's unit is, a punt isn't a bad outcome, a turnover leading to a short field is.

Really? That's pretty week.

Actually, 38-14 is pretty pertinent to the conversation. We're talking about the playcalling at the end of the first half when we were up 17-7; we already had enough points to win the game. This defense is special man.

Would you agree that we're a better defensive team in '11 than we were in '10? You can see from some of the offensive play calling that CNS does. We don't have to press. 20 points might be enough to win every game we play.

As I said man up and run through them. There is nothing finesse about TR bowling over a DB! My point exactly, I don't really care if it is up the gut or on the corner, shove it down their throats!

And I dang sure didn't want a FG down there.

I have more of an issue with the playcalling at the 1, earlier in the game, when we got stuffed and had to settle for a FG.

QB sneak and 2 runs into the pile. With the razorbacks stuffing the middle, running a play action pass, end around, boot leg, would have been an easy 6 points if executed correctly. Maybe CNS didn't want to pull all the tricks out of the hat before the Florida and LSU games?
