ESPN News just reported,"Back to Saban"

That could well be the key. Saban (from rumors) is not all that thrilled with Miami. Obviously, the rational could be be made akin to Spurrier returning to the SEC.

I do not have any information whatsoever on Coach Saban. I do think that who whoever is pulling the strings this go-around is doing a very good job as BamaRich pointed out of Smoke and Mirrors.

I think we will see more of it this week, and when a decision is made it will be like a "bolt out of the blue".

I realize many people scream "Fire Mal Moore-- His job is on the line --- " But where do we stand today in terms of the AD?

The Athletic Department has:

1) A constant NC contender for Gymnastics
2) A strong SEC contender for Baseball
3) #1 Golf Team (will check that)
4) AWESOME Basketball program. (watchout Kentucky)
5) State-of-the-art Football facilities
6) Incredible Stadium
7) Donations at an all time high

Seems to me that Coach Moore has been doing his job. Now we need a coach for our flagship, the Crimson Tide Football Team, to step up to the plate and do what Mal Moore has done.

Dad gum... if you don't just tell the truth about Mal doing his job. It's nice to see that someone actually understands that he's doing a good job... and not focusing solely upon this football thing.

Good job, wisten...I think Coach Moore has been great for the University. And, I really don't see much of ANYTHING to critcize him about, so I don't get the undue crap that gets thrown at him all the time by the ill-informed...

Wow! Can I get a hallelujah?

Why are we wasting time on Coach N.S we will not get him. We never had a chance at the ball coach. We will never get Coach B.S to leave OU. We need to go ahead with Cocah Rod or Coach P.J and stopping wasting time. I think both of them would be a better fit then Saban.

(roll eyes icon goes here!!!)... must not have read Earle's statement about citing something as opinion or fact.

Here's a little information from one of the "uninformed."

1) Gymnastics coach Sarah Patterson was hired by Coach Bryant in 1979. Mal Moore has done exactly what every AD since has done -- try to keep her. He's been successful, but in all honesty, she's a self-sufficient enterprise.

2) Baseball coach Jim Wells was hired in 1994, 5 years before Moore assumed his AD position. One might even argue that baseball has declined under Moore, and you might consider that I am a former season ticket holder for baseball (1998-2004).

3) Moore did hire Jay Seawell to coach men's golf.

4) Mark Gottfried was hired in 1998, before Moore was AD.

5) - 7) Nobody has disputed that Moore is a great fundraiser.

Now, here's a list of Moore's hires:

2000 -- Dennis Franchione (Football)
2001 -- None
2002 -- Jay Seawell (Men's Golf), Billy Pate (Men's Tennis)
2003 -- Eric McIlquhan (Swimming & Diving), Mike Price (Football), Mike
Shula (Football)
2004 -- None
2005 -- Stephany Smith (Women's Basketball), Mic Potter (Women's Golf)
2006 -- Larry Davis (Rowing)

I think what makes people say things like "Moore's job is on the line" is that there's really not a whole lot of excellence in these hires (yet), and his last two football hires have been...poor.

I currently have a new job offer. I wasn't looking for a change but the phone rang......and what does it hurt to listen? The potential new employer is very confident that I will accept the offer. Why? During this process I have kept an open mind and even attempted to "sell" myself to the prospective new employer. The truth is, now that I have the offer, I don't know what I am going to do. My wife has "inside" information but she doesn't know what I am going to do because I don't know myself.

Is it so hard to believe that there is an outside chance that NS, or any other coach for that matter, could be in the same situation. So many factors come into play when anyone makes a life changing decision to change employers.

I'm just glad that I can make my decision without fans and the press breathing down my neck. We should remember that any prospective coach, while a public figure, is a person just like us and has to consider such things as family, friends, fear of the unknown, etc. when making a decision to accept a job offer.

Yep we definately need a cure to zap all these l-o-s-e-r mentality cases that have suddenly come out of the woodworks denying our ability to land a biggie and the cure is a savior called a name coach. Our time for good luck is due anyday now.

Umm... you do realize that Mike Shula was not "his hire" don't you. And if you think that CDF was a "poor hire" at the time, you would have either (1) been in the minority or (2) just speaking from hindsight... which is always 20/20. I would also add that just because Mike Shula didn't make it to the next level didn't automatically mean he wasn't a good hire for the situation. He pretty much accomplished what most felt he needed to accomplish for the hire.

God Please end the CNS talk, he is not coming, no way no how, the man is on fire in the NFL at a cool 4.5 million per year. We are not going to offer that, nor are we the Miami Dolphins, so everyone on this post needs to get acquainted with the names Rodriquez, Johnson, and Grobe, and be happy if we get any of the three. Roll Tide and thank God old doe eyes is gone!

Tone down the sarcasm, OK?

Franchione has nothing to do with what I said about Moore's last two hires.

Moore's last two football hires are Price and Shula. And yes, they're both his hires. I know that Witt chose Shula, but Moore was AD at the time and didn't resign over being "forced" to take Shula.

For the record, I thought Shula should get another year IF he agreed to make some substantive staff changes.

Point is, Mal Moore is something like 2-for-8 in hiring good coaches, which is why people are nervous. Moore is a great fundraiser and a good caretaker as AD. His personal life (at least in the last 10-15 years) is a testament to the man. However, his hiring has been substandard and the poster to whom I responded was citing successes created by previous ADs.

Do you even have a clue as to how a coach is hired, who approves the hire, signs the contracts? Try listening for a change.

As one can see from my Sept. 2001 join date and relatively low post count, I "listen" a lot more than I "speak."

I know exactly how the process works. I know exactly the steps, in order. If I didn't know this prior to the past two weeks, then I would have learned it over that period.

Did you even read my post that sparked BAMARICH's response? Those were FACTS that I presented regarding the coaches hired during Mal Moore's tenure as AD. They were presented in direct response to an uninformed poster who attributed successes to Moore that belong to other ADs.

I don't want Mal Moore fired. However, it's not hard to see why some would question his hiring abilities. If you like, then throw football out of the equation. The result will be the same.

SD@W also leaves out the fact that the program was in shambles at the time of his last 2 hires due to MD, a Bockrath hire, who the choice of the majority of the highly experienced expert fanbase we have here at Alabama.

This has nothing to do with it. Dubose has nothing to do with it, and the fan base really has nothing to do with it.

Most of the "highly successful" programs previously noted are led by coaches hired under other ADs, while most of Moore's hires have been less than stellar. Look at dates of hire and records.

I challenge you to show me (citing facts) that Mal Moore has even begun to approach his success in fundraising with his success in hiring.

EDIT: 11/3/2006 @ 11:48 pm.
I'm not going to continue arguing with those who refuse to read posts in context. All this is doing is getting this thread off track.

To get the thread back to its original thought, I heard one day last week (and this is not my rumor) on a talk radio show that Chris Mortenson from ESPN had stated on a different radio show that Alabama might actually have a shot at Nick Saban. I can't remember the exact quote, but Mortenson said that he had been hearing that Saban may be already getting restless with the NFL. Sorry I don't have a link, but that's just something I heard (I believe on the "Maxed Out" sports show) and I thought it was interesting. Mortenson usually reports reality and not rumor, so it caught my ear.

I don't think Saban is coming, but I trust the mods here at Tidefans and I trust Cecil Hurt and Saban's name keeps coming up with regularity, so he's definitely in the running. If the mods or Cecil speak, I listen with a keen ear! I would love to have him! rtr

Is there any way that you could explain to me how Coach Moore is 2-for-8 in hiring good coaches? And keep in mind that my roommate is a swimmer, my best-friend is a golfer, and I'm on the tennis team here at UA... (And all I care about is football.)
