Excellent pic of the "controversial" catch

My thoughts on the “controversial catch” is it must have been reviewed by the inside officials and they didn’t stop play. If play had been stopped and reviewed at length, there is a good chance it might have been ruled incomplete. This was a huge play that went for us.

The 4th qtr play where Jaylen sat on the defender, and spun off; I have rewatched it several times and I don’t believe he was down. His chin never touched the turf. This was a huge play that went against us.

I think we’re conflating what constitutes a completed catch vs. what causes a fumble.

As I understand the rule, a completed catch requires the receiver to control the ball through contact with the ground (or going out of bounds, or crossing the goal line).

A fumble assumes that an offensive player has control of the ball after the snap, then loses control before being downed by whatever means or crossing the goal line.

Now a question for someone who knows the rules better than I do: I’ve always understood that the runner is down whenever any part of the body other than hands or feet touch the ground.

Does it matter if the top of the hand or the top of the foot touch, but nothing else does?

It would be uncommon, but most likely to happen when there are defensive players under the runner preventing knees, hips, elbows, shoulders, etc. from touching. Or when a stumbling ballcarrier balances himself with a fist and the backs of his knuckles touch. Could happen with the back of the hand I guess, but that would be awkward and could potentially cause injury.
The hand can touch (unless it's holding the ball like Stoerner). The elbow and knee can't...

Post of the year! You confirmed the catch. I truly missed the knee down. Great job!

Go back and read the whole thread. This picture doesn't confirm anything except he had the ball securely in both hands before he hit the ground.

The "knee" touching the ground doesn't mean the play is over in this case because he dove for a pass.

You'd be 100% correct if he had been a runner OR if he caught the pass and then became a runner, but in this case he's got to catch the pass and survive the ground for it to be a completion.

This has been explained in this thread several times.

I can argue this both ways and both result in the same conclusion: Completed reception.

The photo in the OP shows both possession and knee down. The play is dead right there and it's a completed reception.

Later photos and slo mo show that Bond maintains control and the ball rolls briefly over his hand, with the hand on the ground and then briefly touches the ground. Again, completed reception.
It should be dead when that knee touches the ground. But then you have refs like Autrey, who somehow are blind to that knee being down. In which case Bond would have an incompletion.

I'm kinda shocked at the amount of misunderstanding about something that happens several times in each game.

If we are talking about a very random event with a unique rule this would be understandable, but we are talking about a common play/rule.

When he rolled over the defender his butt hit the ground, so he was down. The catch by Bonds was just that, a catch.

the professional football league in this country can’t define a catch. And they do it for a living.

No need to dispute or get crossways about it…just my humble opinion, and “it’s you and me and we just disagree “…and that’s okay too😊

I blame CBS and Gary Danielson for all this. If Gary had not made a big deal out of it, this thread wouldn't exist.
Danielson was loud about it. I think he's heard that some fans of some programs in this league don't care for him. He was going to go out with a loud bang.

If it weren't for his age, I'd imagine ABC/ESPN/Disney/The Mouse would pick him up from CBS. Maybe he should try calling golf tournaments. Go away, Gary. Go where Verne is. I bet it's nice and quiet.

I doubt Gary is going anywhere. CBS has a multi-year deal with B1G to replace their SEC Saturday.
