On the one hand McCarron follows a line of former Alabama quarterbacks who made a CRAP TON of cash in the NFL without taking hits to the knees or noggin who likely are still bouncing grandkids on their knees without too much pain, and of course... How do I say this, his wife's a freakin knockout, so how much does he REALLY need to take hits to the head with her waiting for him in the stands. But on the other hand he's definitely better than many guys I've seen start whole seasons in the NFL and it would be nice if he got just one shot.

Eight years as a backup QB in the NFL is a solid way to make some serious dough and not suffer much physical damage.
Cliff Stoudt was back up to Terry Bradshaw for about 16 years.
Stoudt had splinters in his butt then he went to the Birmingham Stallions.
Cliff was a good QB. He told me it was aggravating, but the easiest money anyone ever made. The Stallions Security Chief introduced me to Cliff and I talked with him at several home games.

I still think AJ could be an above avg NFL starter but it looks like he's never going to get the chance at this point.

I have the feeling he's one of those QB's who might play better in actual ballgames but the starter performs better in practice which keeps AJ from ever getting a shot.

One thing I've always disliked about the NFL is how teams almost never give the Backup QB a shot even when their Starter struggles for weeks. They don't even let the Backups play in garbage time when the game's outcome is no longer in doubt.

So if you're the Backup, you're not playing at all....ever.... unless the Starter gets badly injured.

Glad he gets to stay in the league. I wish he'd get his opportunity and if for some reason Ryan goes down he'd have a good offense to run.

AJ is still one of my favorite Bama QBs of all time. He's a bama boy who made good. His '11 and '12 seasons were not as statistically jaw-dropping as Tua's or MJ's but that we also during a time when we were basically 50/50 throw/run team.

Maybe my favorite memory of him is the comeback over LSU when they had basically shut our offense down and then AJ led us on a great 4th quarter drive that ended with AJ to TJ - one of the greatest Bama plays of all time!!!

And of course, the game he played against ND in Miami was a beauty to behold!

I’m happy that AJ is continuing to find work as a journeyman backup. And he’s shown he can be a good game manager if he’s forced to play. Wish Sims & Coker would’ve gotten a chance.

Man has the best job in the world for at least one more year.
They say that the best job in the sports world is bull pen catcher. They are all paid the major league minimum. AJ's job pays more but he actually has to learn the play book and is always one play away from being the QB on the field. Most of us would be ecstatic to take several million $ per year to do what he does!

Never really understood his treatment by nfl teams. If you were to listen to sports talking heads there is a dearth at qb position in the league. Cousins; AJM better. Da bears; could have used a qb as good as AJM. Jets: give me a break. Eagles, Panthers, Pats, seriously? Denver certainly could have used him the last couple of years. I think he is better than a lot of qbs in the league. Would look good in GB this year standing as heir if Aaron leaves. Jags could have used someone as good as AJ. When in Oakland was better than starter. SMH.

I wonder if he didn’t get blackballed during his interviews with teams during the draft

Crimson colored glasses much?

There is a difference between saying “ he is better than some starters” and “ he is better than X with no proof”. Every team in the NFL has around a decade’s worth of tape on him and has decided against having him as a starter. As cheap as many of these teams are, you would say that the law of averages would suggest that by now that he would’ve been Fitzpatrick 2.0 if they wanted him to be by now.

Everyone wants to crap on Cousins but they forget to look at his stats when they do. He has a higher completion percentage than Rodgers and a comparable quarterback rating on a lesser team than Rodgers. Cousins is the 3rd most accurate quarterback in NFL history.
I don’t like who is #1 so “thanks” for making me research.

As far as AJ being better than Carr..... I honestly don’t know how much of the Raiders you have watched but the reason that they don’t go to the playoffs isn’t because of Derek Carr. The guy is pretty good and pretty accurate.

Not really. Even if he turned off scouts at the draft he had years to prove he was a starter but failed to force someone to jump on the opportunity. Injuries and just bad timing on moves were probably bigger factors.

Personally I believe that had he stuck it out for another year in Cincinnati or chose to be a backup behind Brady instead of going to Buffalo that it would’ve improved his chances. He came to FA in the biggest Quarterback Free Agencies in history.
