I think we were spoiled with Tua and Bryce Into thinking that all the best QBs are just gonna be ready right away, and that if it takes them a minute, it's never gonna happen. I would say the majority of QBs take several years to develop, sometimes it takes all 4 years. We also gotta remember Mack reclassified is only 8 or 9 months older than Russell. He was also considered more of a raw talent, so it was always gonna take a few years. I expect him to be a thing at some point, whether it be for us this year, or next year for someone else.

Mack is a Senior, so there may not be a next year for him. If he and Russell are still neck and neck in two weeks, I think Mack's seniority gives him the start. But we'll likely see both a lot in the first two games. And that should give the coaches more clarity as to who should lead the offense.

There's the rub. One school of thought, to which I'm partial, says, "If the two are even, you go with the younger one."

Mack also has his degree. So, I'm not sure he'd have a reason to stay if he's not the starter. No one knows except him what's his priority vs opportunity.

He may want to refer to his scholarship he signed when he went to play for LSU where I'm almost certain he agreed for the school to use his name, image and likeness not only while he was attending but after he was gone as well.

Talk about the definition of greed, an NFL player literally making hundreds of millions of dollars is worried about the college that provided him the platform to get those hundreds of millions of dollars, using his image and name.

CKD said during Spring, that Mack was light years better than last year. I think after following Penix, Milroe, and Simpson, he saw his chance to start. And has worked hard toward that.

One matter that hasn't really been discussed in all of the chatter is the issue of loyalty. When CKD came to UA, Mack transferred in with him... as did a few other Husky players. They all earned starting jobs in their time... and he has not yet. Mack has been loyal to CKD - not only did he enroll early at UW, but he's sat the bench for two years here - when in all honesty he would have been UW's starter long ago if CKD were still there. He deserves every opportunity to start given his willingness to stay even after original conditions were changed.

I certainly agree 100% with that. Thing is, Coach is making decisions on his coaching career in a situation like this and there are no guarantees even with loyalty in play. Again, he and the staff have the best feel on these two guys, their personalities/metal states, overall capabilities, who is willing to have patience, etc. When I say "willing to have patience" I am specifically referring to Russell because he is the golden boy in this scenario. Keep in mind that the backup is also critical because, just like Simpson last year, QB1 is subject to change on any given play. So, If Keelon is willing to be patient, Mack can start. If not, Russell is our man.

True, and what we aren’t sure about is how patient Russell may be. Supposedly Texas Tech threw an obscene amount of money at him in the offseason and he stayed put. We’ve got two really good ones behind him in Thomalla and Kawaa, and a couple more really good ones committed. I do think there’s an element of “this coaching staff got Mike Penix and Ty Simpson drafted in the first round, and even got Milroe drafted”. You look at our QB commits and I think guys really want to play for this staff. If Mack starts this season, I personally think there’s still a good chance Russell sticks around.

That is the good news with this staff. I mean, these guys have advanced degrees in coach speak and it really is frustrating as a fan. But as coaches, seems they really know how to relate to players and that really is the X factor in today's money game.

General observations from REC scrimmage

- Russell is your starter unless DeBoer wants to give Mack one final chance

- O line got slapped around by our defense

- RB….. I’m going to let the news trickle out before commenting on it. But it doesn’t sound good.

I read that AK Dear got hurt. Crowell didn’t even play. Hope that’s precautionary.
