Alabama: Fall Practice Reports

Fair points all around.

Counterpoint is I don't think loyalty is a "thing" anymore in college football. I'm not saying CKD might not have a soft spot of AM, however, the business model doesn't allow it anymore. The players aren't loyal and the coaches can't afford it either.

If CKD plays Mack because he's been more loyal but KR has outplayed him for the position, the players will know it too.

FWIW, I'm fine with AM starting/playing if he's outplayed KR. But NOT for "loyalty" reasons.

This is NOT a Jalen Hurts/Tua T. comparison.
There is NO loyalty in "professional" football...

Chris Low and Pete Nakos predict Keelon will be named the starter. They have good sources of course. Supposedly someone on another site is there at the scrimmage and said Keelon took the 1st snap with the 1's and that the offense looks really good.
I don't think they have "sources". They just guess. I doubt coach would like any leaks of secret info that he may not know yet himself. The sports and Bama media are posting like Russell has been named. It may be him. But they're just guessing.

We've definitely had some great WR's over the past 20 years. I'm like others... Smith and Cooper stand atop the WR mountain as far as production at UA go. I absolutely loved Julio Jones and the stuff he did to help to transform the program at the time he was here, but his college production simply didn't equal that of Smith's, Cooper's, and Ridley's.
Yes, the QBs play an integral role. Julio had JPW(1) and GM (2). Amari had AJ (2) and Blake (1). Devonta has Jalen (1), Tua (2), Mac (1). In light of that it makes Julio’s and Amari’s records even more remarkable.

IMO, there is no comparison between KR and AM. AM would be a good and successful QB for Alabama but KR may be transcendent, at least probably great. He has many elite qualities but maybe the greatest is his innate ability to know what to do. He’s the antithesis of JM who had the worst football instincts of any player, not just QB, that I’ve ever seen. KR will help the running game with his great deep ball which Alabama did not have last year, even with Ty’s elite short and mid game.

IMO, CKD has been and is being loyal to AM by having a legitimate open competition and being very respectful of him in his public comments about the competition. If he were to choose him over a better QB then he would be disloyal to the institution which is paying him well and to whom he owes his best efforts, towards AM’s teammates, to the better QB, and to the fan base. He would also be disloyal to AM for putting him in the position of possibility being the cause of team failure when there was a better choice.

I agree with everything bolded but he’s actually already done this picking #4 over Ty in 2024.

We failed and failed and failed and he kept the best QB on the bench.

Nevertheless it sounds like KR has passed Mack and the announcement is inevitably coming next week.

But it also sounds like Mack has played well in practice and scrimmages and is always 1 snap from being promoted and we’d be ok if he had to play in an emergency.

We’ll probably be in the best shape in the QB 2-Deep since ‘19-‘20

Well, let's pray that when the decision is publicly made, the person being announced is TRULY the best option. Because, let's be honest, the past three years or so that hasn't been the case.

My personal opinion is Russell will be named the starter. You're starting to get leaked reports from different sources that when people watch the offense run, it runs better with Russell. However, that doesn't mean Austin Mack isn't still a huge part of the potential success for this team. As we saw with Tua and Hurts, we're one injury away from the backup having to come in and win a big game. So, if Mack is the backup, I truly hope he stays engaged, and continues to give a 110% because the difference between him holding a clip board and taking the next snap is literally one play away.

yep, within the span of about 10 months, we had the qb come off the bench 2 scores down vs jawjuh.

Agreed. Although there were persistent reports about Ty struggling with several aspects of the game in 2023 too. Less so in '24 and I wish they had played him.

From above... Germie was a warrior! Wish we had him for one more year.

I'm excited to hear that Russell is most likely going to get the start. I thought CKD might be more conservative and take a Saban-like approach going with the more experienced guy (Mack) but he's choosing to be more aggressive on offense by going with Russell. One big thing Russell adds is his mobility which helps immensely if our OL is still suspect he can take off and make something out of nothing where Mack might take a sack.

Nothing negative against Mack, I commend the young man for uprooting and coming down to a part of the country he was completely unfamiliar with to follow a coach. However, when I started hearing the competition was close and the fact Mack has been exposed to DeBoer's system longer than any QB DeBoer's ever coached while being at Alabama, told me a lot.

I believe Mack will. I have a REC friend who was told that Russell was 24-28 and 2 TD's in the second scrimmage. Very impressive against our D. I would think Mack understands he has been beaten out by an incredibly talented player and will stay engaged at least through the end of the season before moving on.
