And to think if Hurts would have done like most college kids his age and pouted, and not fully prepared as the backup, he would have gone in and proved to everyone why he was the backup. Yet, his preparedness allowed him to perform like a starter and opened the door to what ultimately got him to being a super bowl winning quarterback and super bowl MVP.
I think some of us are forgetting that, according to 247, Keelon is not just the highest-rated QB we've ever signed, he's the highest-rated player we've ever signed.

Agree; Jalen is a different kind of cat, though. He is stronger mentally than his is physically; which is saying something.
I had quoted several of you guys to show my agreement regarding Russell's ratings and abilities but my computer randomly shut down.
My point is that we're not underestimating Mack's abilities, but we may be underestimating Russell's! While Mack has some elite characteristics, Russell is off the charts in comparison!
And before anybody reminds me, I know many high-ranked QBs sometimes don't materialize, but if Keelon does hit close to many experts' expectations, we may in fact have the BEST QB we've had in the modern era!

Most mature player I can recall. My son was at university during pep rally after Tua replaced him. Jalen got the biggest response from the students when he spoke, as the backup QB. Amazing.

Lowe is considered by many as the most "insider" of all major media folks since CKD has been at Bama. If so, why would he risk the trust of CKD and "go out on a limb" to get clicks when he really doesn't need that? I doubt he would.
So, here's my theory: CKD told Lowe the plan was to name KR the starter because they already know he's the better player. So the "story" is out there and this way CKD can keep on point with how good both QBs really are (and I think they both are very good, but just not the same kind of "good"). But now, when they finally announce it's KR, the optics are better for Mack, having run a close race. This all could be designed to keep AM engaged and ready in case of a KR injury.

I’ll remind anyway at the risk of speaking on anyone’s behalf other than myself.
I think everyone who even somewhat closely follows the program knows that KR is rated by the recruiting services as our highest QB recruit and Overall recruit.
But seriously he hasn’t even started a game yet.
I think he has potential to be very good but some things being said are hyping things up to an unreasonable expectation.
Before KR it was Bryce and Brodie and Barnett and Ty
I love Croyle but he did not really play like a 5 Star Heisman winner.
Bryce was Excellent and did win a Heisman but imo he was not better than Tua or Mac
Ty took a few years to develop and Barnett was a complete bust.
At WR Julio, RW, Ridley, and Dozens of other guys were rated higher than Smitty or Cooper
It’s usually never the highest rated guy on paper who actually is best.
I’m looking forward to seeing KR play but goodness let’s temper expectations a touch before the kid even plays.
All I’m saying is expectations are too high right now.
Coach Bryant said "potential" is a French word that means not worth a "darn" yet.
I noted he might not meet expectations. But the real point of my post is that some seem surprised he's apparently getting the nod over Mack.
I think the staff has probably had a hunch as to how they expected this to turn out and they were right.
Jalen was taught how to play the QB position by Dan Enos the year he sat behind Tua. He absorbed all of it and used it to spring board himself into a fine player. Kiffin is-was a play caller. I'm not sure how he is from a development standpoint. Jalen is a first class person.
We got a good problem at the QB position in Tuscaloosa and Coach knows that. We have a QB1 A and B situation but the golden boy is going to get the nod. No sense in ruffling anyone's feathers so best to keep them both focused on the prize, continue to compete and actually play both in the first game.
Kiffin maximized his strengths as a TF and minimized exposure to weakness.
I hate giving Lane credit but he did get an SEC Offensive POTY out of a TF Jalen.
Daboll owes us money. He did NOTHING to help Jalen and exposed his weaknesses.
As you say Enos rebuilt him and really taught him how to play and then I’m sure Riley helped some at OU too.
As others have said though JH is probably the most mentally tough and resilient player we’ve had… at QB anyway.

Agree. Mack would start almost every other place in the country. QB is not our issue, and I'll contend that it was not last year either, until Ty's injury.
I cannot say the same, that "QB is not our issue" while Milroe was in town. So much pure athletic talent, freakish almost. But, there used to be a saying about having a "head for the game", and I don't believe he did.
Any offense that “ rolls “ means the O line was playing well. Not possible unless they are.

Hurts’ father was his coach as well at Channelview High School in Houston. Having a coach for a father goes a long way in developing mental toughness.
In terms of Milroe, he was pretty much a “replacement” in that 2020 class when Carson Beck flipped to Georgia.
Milroe was rated as a four star pocket passer by some services but was rated by many as the third overall “duel threat” QB. The reason? He played in a drop back passing offense but was given the liberty to “take off” and run whenever he felt pressure. Thus he never was a polished QB coming out of high school. He was a project.
The difference between Hurts and Milroe was Hurts was mentally tough, a competitor, with a huge desire to improve. Where many players would pout and whine when relegated to second string, Hurts didn’t. He used that year with Dan Enos to get better. All Lincoln Riley had to do was refine him a little more as a QB.
