In Mobile, I'd have to say my favorites are:

1) Lighthouse in Irvington, 2) Original Oyster House (both on the Causeway and in Gulf Shores), and 3) Nan Sea's near Dog River.

A few of my fav's don't even favor a restaurant on the outside -- but hmmmm, once you get inside, it's a different story!

BL,we used to vsit relatives in the Mobile area 2 or 3 times a year and every time we'd go down there we would go out on the causway to a place called Palmer's (I think). The seafood was always great. Is it still in operation, is the food still good? We haven't been there in about 15 yrs or more.

I like -
Papadeaux's Seafood Kitchen in Beaumont, Tx.
Pat's of Henderson, Breaux Bridge, Louisiana.
Mike Anderson's in New Orleans.
Bluepoint Oyster Bar in Chicago.

Sadly, Palmer's is no more, but it was THE place to go for seafood. Also on the causeway was Ben's BBQ that strangely enough had an awesome seafood platter. I think both places were wiped out by a hurricane. (Frederick?) In those days, you could hardly go wrong anywhere in Mobile for seafood.

T-Mac: You're 100% correct, Palmer's was the place to go years ago.

And goodness -- I haven't thought of Ben's in ages. They had good ribs as well. I thought Ben's burned down -- but you may be correct, as Freddie did create havoc & basically cleared out our causeway in 1979.

Not sure if they're owned by the same folks, but they have a Ben Jr.'s in Fairhope. They make an awesome Shrimp Po-Boy.

The Riverside Diner on highway 280 by the Coosa River Bridge in Childersburg. They have the best seafood buffet in Alabama and believe me, I've tryed them all.

If you are ever in East Tennessee You've got to try Cowboy's Seafood near Seviereville. Take the Seviereville exit off of I-40. Go south to the second light and turn left.(there is a sign) Go about 5 miles. It will be on the right. This is where the locals go to eat seafood.

Mine is honestly Kyma in Atlanta. I love good seafood-bar type places where you can get 2 lbs of great steamed shrimp, but Kyma redefined the way I look at seafood.

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">My vote is easily Kyma on Piedmont. Sadly, I have too few rubles to go very often. However, if you go with a group of about 5 or more, they will set you up with kind of a sampler of fresh mediterranean fish prepared in a greek fashion. I never knew that fish could be so good till I went there, and I have spent a lot of time on the coast. Really one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. . . it's worth the bucks if you have 'em.</font>

Note: Jack, I hope you aren't upset that I quoted your post

Here in Texas, the best two places I've found are The Flying Dutchman in Kemah and Snoopy's at the Intercoastal Canal in Corpus Christi (fried seafood).

Clary's in Galveston is pretty good, too.

I lived in Mobile for 8 years before I moved to Tejas; I used to really like Constantine's.

Avoid any of the Landry's restarants. Food's fair at best; service is poor.

Sam's Oyster House in Ft. Walton Beach, FL...at least back when dinosaurs roamed the earth when I was in HS there...Sadly, Sam's closed some years ago.

We like Acme & Felix's in N.O., along with a little place called something like Cassemento's on Magazine street.

One of the advantages of living not-too-far from New Orleans is that we have Mike Anderson's here in H'burg! Great stuff!

Original Oyster House--Gulf Shores branch--is another family favorite.

A way-off-the--beaten--path place is the little place overlooking Pass Christian harbor on the MS coast. Can't recall the name, but it's adjacent to a Domino's pizza, oddly enough. This is on one of the very few stretches of MS beach that's not covered up by a casino.

But man, was Sam's good...<sigh>

"In short, Alabama fans have plenty to be proud of right now, and plenty to look forward to. And that pride and optimism isn’t only rooted in tangible accomplishment either. A lot of it is rooted in the class and character of the men who lead the program and of the young men who wear that crimson jersey."

For me, it's the Louisiana Lagniappe in Destin. Great food and absolutely incredible service.

Texas, I've been to Kemah a number of times. My folks lived in Clear Lake for a while when I was at Alabama. We used to go to the docks and you could get (literally) fresh off the boat medium shrimp for .99 cents per lb. Incredible. Of course, you had to head them yourself but we must have eaten so much shrimp that I felt like Bubba from Forrest Gump, "shrimp salad, shrimp sandwich, boiled shrimp, fried shrimp, broiled shrimp, shrimp soup,......."

TiderinVA, I've been to L.L. in Destin and I think its a great place, too.

Baybrook Seafood (actually its in Seabrook rather than Kemah, on the north side of the Clear Lake cut into Galveston Bay) was where I used to get all my seafood.

Gotta try the Oysterbar at the Atlantis in Reno. I was in Reno for a week and had lunch there every single day. Sushi and seafood salads. Never tried anything else.

Or the buffet at the Venetian in Las Vegas.

Fancy: Mary Mahoney's in MS.

PS: I don't gamble.

SCrj, I forgot about Mary Mahoney's down the road from here. Have you ever eaten @ Chappy's down there? Good stuff!

Wolf Bay Lodge, a few miles south of Elberta,AL.A pretty long drive from Pensacola but worth it. Also Jerrys Cajun Cafe & Market on 9th avenue in Pensacola. Great Po Boys too.

I've been to two locations of Joe's Crab Shack, one in Dallas and the other in Orlando. Both were very good. Do they have a Joe's Crab Shack in Mobile yet?

There is a place near Butler, Al on the Tombigbee River called Ezell's Fish Camp that's pretty good. Also, Bobby's Fish Camp off Hwy. 84 near Silas, AL also on the Tombigbee had some great seafood. Great oysters! These were mostly freshwater places, but they had a good mix of seafood in there, also.

TiM: Joe's Crab Shack has already opened and closed in Mobile.

Too many rats crawling on the floor, and bugs in the food!

Just kidding!

They just didn't do enough business to keep them afloat.
