Favorite hard liquor thread

I'm not a big fan of Laphroaig, a bit too smoky and peaty for me. Laphroaig is one of the love it or hate it scotch whiskeys. I may not hate it but I have never requested Laphroaig in a bar.

Smoky and peaty is a good description. Also with Laphroaig coming off of a scottish island, Islay, and not a very large island either so I also find it too salty from the barrels breathing in all the salt air. I lived on Islay View for several years and the lane was called this for good reason. One of my favorites is Glenmorangie, one I can afford from time to time. Macallan seemed the most popular of the Single Malts in Scotland but awfully expensive on this side of the "pond".

The best blend I've discovered is Famous Grouse, followed by Bell. These and only a few others is what you'd find on most bars over there. Won't find no 100 pipers.

I enjoyed my share of Nosing and Tasting events.

I do like Glenmorangie and any of the Macallan scotches. I have a bottle of 16 year old Lagavulin and Strathisla that taste like medicine, bad medicine at that but the aroma is nice. Oban and Cardu are nice. I brought back a bottle of Dallas Dhu 30 year old from Scotland last summer. A fearful price but heaven in a bottle. I brought back several other cask strength scotches from 15 - 20 years old for the collection.

I must admit I do enjoy my Kettle One martini, slightly dirty, straight up, very cold, 2 olives.

There's not much else I enjoy as much.

Very cold is an absolute, for Absolute or any other vodka. For last few years I keep vodka in the freezer and the vermouth in the frig. Best purchase I made was in stainless steel martini glasses, these I also store in the freezer. Often, when the martini is poured, ice will form on the "glass".

Here something done in Russia and a few other countries that were once a part of the USSR; A good vodka out of a freezer, pour a shot and shoot it down followed by a hefty bite of dill pickle. This is not for the weak at heart.

Wild Turkey 101, Glenmorangie, Bushmills Original. Neat with a glass of ice water on the side. During the summer months, gin and tonic or a pale ale.

Not a very sophisticated list perhaps, but that's the way my tastes run.

You learn something new every day. I don't think I have run across the SS Martini glasses but I do chill my Martini glasses before drinking. If we are going to have a couple of Martinis I put 4 glasses in the freezer. I do keep vodka in the freezer but not the vermouth and I do prefer a vodka martini over a martini made with gin. I am also flexible with what I garnish with, twist of lemon zest, onion, olive, blue cheese stuffed olive, cheddar stuffed olive or onion stuffed olive.

To any who have not tried it, there are single malt Irish whiskeys on the market which I find to be very good but as expensive as the best Scotch whiskey. I have a couple of bottles and find the taste to be sweeter than Scotch and a dash of water is all that is needed to bring out the marvelous aroma. Connemara Cask Strength and Locke's 8 year old are the two I can recommend.

I gave up liquor. But back in my prime I would love to have two fingers of BALLANTINE's 30 year old scotch. I still have a bottle that belonged to my father in my house it has not been touched in 13 years. That makes it 43 hum almost as old as me it is hard to find, this bottle has had one Oz poured out of it. If you can find it is about 340 to 400 dollars a 750ml bottle it is a shame I don't drink anymore as this is a exceptional bottle of scotch. It is kept in a dark cool place and I don't dust the bottle, I know it not wine but I makes me feel good to know that it is taken care of medicinal uses only .. ...LOl

So you tell me I found a bargin at $329?

I love the description, makes it tempting to purchase; "Rich amber color. Sweet dried fruit, honey, and toffee aromas. Round generous and silky entry. Pleasantly, medium-bodied. Heather, light peat, toffee and brown spice flavors. Long, peppery sweet finish with drying wood tannins, peat and minerality showing through. Smooth and classy with fine balance of sweetness and spice."

Well here you go my friend. http://www.homewetbar.com/stainless-steel-martini-glasses-p-240.html

At 8 oz these are a bit larger than what most are accoustomed to an establishment. Don't you just hate, when you order a martini out in town and pour measuring leaves an inch of space, sometimes more. I sent 1 back once that was served no more than half full. I have a large SS Shaker that when full will rim two of these 8 oz glasses.
Yes, Vermouth in the frig, it can and has frooze in the freezer.

Opening that link just cost me over $400. 2 Bama bar stools and 4 martini glasses.

I rarely ever drink hard liquor anymore but i love rums, cheap , light , dark, expensive, i don't care, however i would prefer a good one from PR or the Dominican Republic. I refuse to ingest anything that says Tennessee or Kentucky so i have to curb most bourbon cravings and go for a nice scotch.
